Wlhile the speoinc construction of the reticula-ted portions relatively immaterial, I` 1 have found that the particular arrangement 11? herein illustrated forms an effective interlock with the molten metal enabling the use of a cast shell in which the amount of metal may be reduced to a minimum. Due to the direction of extension of the reticulated portions, the cast shell is effectively reinforced thereby enabling the cast shell to be made comparatively thinner. It will be noted that the reinforcing is not -only effective throughout substantially the entire back, but also at all points Where the cast shell is of changing thickness or direction of extension, thereby preventing fraeturing of the cast shell Where it is ordinarily most susceptible to injury.
After the reinforced cast shell has been formed, it may be filled with a suitable composition filling F of any desired nature. This may be metal of different characteristics, or may be a composition of asphalt, iron borings and the like as heretofore proposed in the art. The tapered Wall or Walls of the central opening effectively engage the composition filling for holding it in place against any possibility of loosening.
In Figures 6 and 7 there is illustrated a slightly modified form of the reinforcing shell in which the back 6 and the flanged sides and ends 12 are indicated as being of greater thickness than the reticulated downwardly and inwardly inclined portions 13. Also, this reinforcing` shell is shown as being free from reticulated reinforcing portions at the ends thereof, this being merely for purposes of illustration, it being understood that the reticulations may extend continuously therearoundl asbefore described, if such a construction is desirable. Y
The advantages of the present invention arise from the provision of a. east metal shell having reinforcing means imbedded therein for strengthening the same, thereby enabling the cast shell to be constructed of the required dimensions for the reception of a composition filling as desired.
Further advantages arise from the construction of a filled brake shoe having the shell constructed of reinforced cast metal.
Still other advantages arise from the pro.- vision of a cast shell having protected upper edges or corners, and having reinforcing means at points naturally subjected to fracture by reason of changes in direction of extension or cross section.
I claim:
l. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell formed With a recess for the reception of filling material, and reenforcing means for said shell covering substantially the entire back thereof and of greater Width and length than the Width and length of said recess whereby the cast metal body forming the back of the recess is continuously reenforced, substantially asdescribed.
2. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell formed With a recess for the reception of filling material, said shell being of box-like contour, and reenforcing means for the back and upper edges of said shell including the upper portion of the side edges thereof eectiveV for reenforcing said shell Where it undergoes a change of direction and contour, substantially as described.
8. In a brake shoe, a east metal shell of box-like contour, and reinforcing means entirely exteriorly of the shell for the points of the shell at which it undergoes a change of contour, substantially as described.
4. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell, re-
inforcing means therefor, said reinforcing means constituting the main portion of the exterior of the back of said shoe, and a filling within said shell, said reinforcing means being effective in a given plane throughout an area greater than the area of the filling in a plane parallel to said first-mentioned plane.
5. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell having a recess therein, reinforcing means for said shell, said reinforcing means constituting a substantial portion'of the back of said shell and at least an exposed portion of the sides thereof, and a filling vvithinsaidshell, substantially as described. Y
6. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell, reinforcing means therefor, said reinforcing means enclosing a substantial portion of the back of said shoe and at least a portionof the sides and ends thereof, and alfilling Within said shell, substantially as described.
7. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell, reinforcing means therefor, said reinforcing means having substantially solid portions constituting a Y substantial portion of the back of said shoe and at least a portion of the sides and ends thereof, and also having reticulated portions, and a filling Within said shell, substantially as described.
S. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell, and reinforcing means therefor forming the outside back portion and the adjacent upper side edges of the shoe, said-reinforcing means having reticulated portions inturned into the shell, substantially as described. y
9. In a brake shoe, a lcast metal shell and reinforcing means therefor, said reinforcing means comprising a main body" portion forming the outside back portion and adjacent upper side edges of the shoe and having reticulated sides and endsl inturned into the shell, substantially as described.
10. In a brake shoe, a cast metal shell having a filling receiving recess therein, reinforcing means therefor, said reinforcing means comprising a back and sides, different portions of said means being of different thickness, and av filling Within said shell, substantially `as described.VV
