PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK r. TAYLOR, or" CINCINNATI, 01-110.
TOY WAGON.
Application filed October 10,1923. Serial No. 667,595.
My invention relates to toy wagons, usually of the type known as coaster wagons, which are used by children for hauling toys, and also for coasting and pulling each other about.
The trouble withthe coaster wagons of which. I have knowledge is that-the child is likely, either while coasting or while being pulled about, to fall backwards from the wagon and injure itself. The provision of some kind of a back for protecting the inmate of the wagon from falling backwards, which back will not interfere with the usual purposes of the wagon when not in usc:K is
other object is to provide a hinged back construction which is strong, simple to make, and practically non-detachable while in use.
These objects and other advantages to be noted I accomplish by that certain'construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy wagon showing the novel seat back in use.
Figure 2 is a cross section of the wagon taken through the attachment point or hinge point of the back.
I have not particularized in the drawings as to any one'form of'wagon body design, but in general have shown sufficient to illustrate the usual features of such wagons. Thus there is the rear truck 1 carrying the wheels 2, and the front truck 3 carrying the wheels 4,the front truck being preferably pivoted by a king bolt (not shown) so as to provide for steering the wagon by the tongue 5, secured to the front truck.
The body has a floor 6, and four sides 7, these sides being low so as not to interfere with a child finding an easy seat in the wagon, and so as to provide a low confining wall to protect objects when being hauled in the wagon.
Wagons of this type are used very widely by children and have been for many years, for both coasting and hauling purposes. The low sides are a particular feature of such wagons, wherein they differ from wagons having high sides, in which my invention would not meet such an apparent need. A child seated on such a wagon will easily fall backward unless it guards itself at all times.
My invention consists in providing a hinged back 8, which may be mounted in various ways adjacent the back wall of the wagon body,-so as to swing up to the position shown in Figure 1 in full lines, and fold down to lie flat on the wagon floor, between the sides thereof, in the position shown in Figure 1 in dotted lines.
The preferred form of hinge structure, which eliminates chances of the hinge device giving way, and thus rendering the back a menace rather than a protection, is formed as follows: Heavy pins 9, 9, are set firmly into the back board 8, so as to project from its two lower corners. Holes 10 are formed in the side walls of the wagon body so as to receive these pins. In making up the wagon in the factory, the back is set in place between the dies when the sides are secured to thebody floor and walls.
Thus unless the back breaks of itself, which can be guarded against by making it stout enough, there are no screws or bolts to become loose, and no way for the child to free the back from the wagon. Also the back will not be in the way of filling $0 the wagon with toys or what not, as it lies flush with the body floor when it is closed down.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 35 ters Patent, isz- 1. In combination, a toy wagon having a body provided with a floor and permanently fixed low sides and back, of aback boardof greater height when erected than the v height of the fixed back, said board hingedly mounted to the body at the back thereof, and in width less than the distance between the sides, said board adapted to swing forward of the body, and down to lie against the floor and to be supported when raised by the per manent back.
2. In'combination, a toy wagon having a body provided with a floor and permanently fixed low sides and back of uniform height, a
seat back for said Wagon of less Width than of the body to serve as a seat back, and t0 the space between the sides and of a suba position resting flat upon the floor of said stantially greater height when erected than body, said means comprising projecting pins 10 the height of the sides and back, said seat and sockets to receive the pins, provided on back having hinge means engaging the sides the said seat back and the sides of the body.
of the body near the back, and adapted to move to a position resting against the back FRANK F. TAYLOR.
