features of' theinve'n'tion *willv be particularly pointed out inthe appended claims.`
My inventionis illustrated i-n theaccom# panying'diawings, iorming'part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device shown in operation,
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a `front elevation of the boring device.
Figure 4 is a detail view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Y
In carrying out my invention, I provide a boring device which I have indicated generally at A, a power mechanism at B for operating the boring device, and a pulling mechanism at C for simultaneously drawing the boringdevice and power mechanism in any desired direction. f
The Vboring device A consists oa casing 4 having an auger 5 movably disposed therein. A bit 6 is removably attached to the auger 5, and a journal 7, which serves as a centering point and a support for the auger when the device is in operation, is mounted upon the bit. a
The power mechanism, which is the means for operating the boring mechanism. consists ofa motor 8 operatively connected to a gear 9 which rotates a shaft 10 by means of a chain `11 connecting them. A pinion 12 is mounted upon the free end of the shaft 10 and is in mesh with a beveled gear 13. The bevel gear 13 is mounted upon a.
'tlierobjects and advantages lwill appear` infthe' followingspecification, and the novel Sima 1i which is hen-1V rigidfby-br'eckasf 15 suspended from a. support 16'. A sprockety 17 is mounted upon the shat'l'fi 'between'fthe' brackets 15. A chain 18 is placedI poni the sprocket 17- and a sprocket 19 `which is rigidly mountedupon the casing'4.` When' the motor Slis in operation, the chain 18 vwillbe ,movedin the direction'cf arrowsf-20.
Torotate the auger' 5in a dircctionopposite thatin which the casing is rotated, I provide ash'aft 21'disp`o'sejd` below the sha-'ft 10, and' operatively v connectedytheretof by gears 22 and '23, respectively. By: placing a sprocket 24 upon the shaft21andfaf'spro'cket' 25 upon the free end of the auger, I con#v neet themby a' chain'V 26. Therefore, fwhen the power mechanism inoperation, the
chain '26 will move arrovvs27.A r` 1 n i heV boringV device is spaced away from the power mechanism by adjustable braces in the direction of the 28, one vend of "each Abei-ng'secured to 'the' casing 44,. and the opposite end' being secured to thesupport 16. The bcri'ngv device isy s'upported by a sled`29, which is pivotally secured to the braces 28. y Rodsv28 aid in securing the power mechanism to the boring device. y
The pulling mechanism consists of a,l
winch 30 and a rigid beam 31 carrying a pulley 32 through which the cable 33 passes. Y
The free end of the cable 33 is secured to the casingl at 34. Y i
From theforegoing description of the various parts of `the device,l` the operation thereof may be readily understood. A ditchv 35 is dug at the side of the street 86 and the boring device is lowered in place, see Figure 1. The beam 31 is placed across the ditch 35' and made irm by clamps 37. The winch 30 is rigidly mounted acrossv the ditch 35 and to the rear of the boring device. The power mechanism is then put in motion, thus turning the casing in anti-clockwise direction, and the auger'in a clockwise direc- The purposes for rotating the casing in an opposite direction to that in which the auger is rotated are:`To aid in forcingk the casing through the hole as it is made, and
'to cause the dirt to be carried back at a greater speed. After the hole has been l. A tunneling device comprising an auger, a casing therefor, power means `for rotating the auger in one direction and for rotating the casing in the opposite direction, adjusting means cooperating with said power means for varying the position of said auger and said casing with respect to said power means, a sled'for supporting said cas-v ing and said auger, and means for simultaneously moving said casing, said auger, and said power means forwardly.

A t tunneling device comprising an auger, a casing therefor, power means Jfory rotating the auger in` one direction and for rotating the casing in the opposite direction, adjusting means cooperating with said power means for varying the position of said auger and said casing with respect to said power means, a sled forsupporting said casing and said auger, and means for simultaneously moving said casing, s aid auger, and said power means forwardly, said last named means returning said boring device to its free position when reversed.
3. `A tunneling v device comprising van auger,'a casing therefor, power means for rotating said auger in one direction and for rotatilng said casing inthe opposite direction, adjusting means cooperating with ,said power means for varying the position of said auger and said casing with respect to said power means,a sled for supporting saidv casing and said auger, and manually operated means for simultaneously'moving said casing, said auger and said power means forwardly. f v
