UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MARSHALL, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AssIonon TO BRIGGS MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, ivrronrean, A oOnronATIoN or MICHIGAN.
. DECK-LID CO STRUCTION.
Original application filed October 13 1924, Serial No 743,442. Divided and. this application filed I March 23, 1925. .Serial No. 17,749.
This application is a division of my copending application for hinge construction for deck lids filed October 13, 1924i, Serial No. 743,4:42, and relates generally to vehicle body deck lids and the like. i
One of the essential objects of the invention is to provide a lightand durable deck lid'that is preferably braced to prevent the same from weaving or twisting, and is also reinforced at the edges and corners thereof by asuitable finish strip whichadds materially to the appearance of the lid. 1
Another object is to provide a lid of this type having simple and reliable counter balancing means which facilitates the upward movement thereof.
A further object is to provide a deck lid and pivot mounting that are simple in con struction and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangcments of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims;
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of. a vehicle body embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the deck lid.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the;
line 3-43 of Figure 2.
. Figure dis a sectional view taken on the line 1-4 of Figure 1. I
Figure is a top plan view attaching plate.
Figure 6 is an end elevation of the plate shown in Figure 5.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates a vehicle body of the closed type having a rearwardly projecting downwardly inclined deck 2 at the top of the usual luggage compartment 3. For gaining access to the compartment 8 there is a suitable opening 4 in the deck that is preferably normally closed by means of a metallic lid 4'. As shown, this lid comprises a sheet metal panel 5 that is preferably return-bent at its edges to form the laterally extending flanges 6 and the depending of the lock flanges 7. hen the lid is closed, the de- T pending flanges 7 fit within the openings l in the deck, while thelateral flanges 6 overlap the upstanding return-bent edge portions 8 of the opening 4 and thereby form a tight.
joint between the lid and deck. Any suit able means such as the hinges 9 may be our ployedifor pivotally connecting the forward end of the lid 4 to the deck 2.
To facilitate the upward movement of the lid I preferably provide suitable counter balancing springs 10 which are preferably terminally connected to the base of the U-:.
shaped member 11 and to the depending flanges 11 ofthe deck 2. .Any suitable means may be employed for securing the springs 10 to the deck flanges 11'. As shown in Figure 4- of the drawings I preferably provide suitable anchor members12 that extend through openings 13 in the fi'anges 11 and are provided at the opposite ends thereof with oppositely projecting laterally extending portions 14 and 15 respeotivelyt The inner lateral portions 15 preferably bear against the inner faces of the fianges' l l, while the outer portions 14 are preferably provided with notches 16.which receive the hooked extremities 17 of the-springs 10.
To prevent the lid from weaving or twist ing when being raised or lower-ed I preferably provide two metallic rods 18 and 19 respectively that are preferably crossed at the centre of the lid and extend to the cor- 21ers thereof. As shown in Figure 2, the inner forward ends of the rods are preferably I provided with flattened portions 20 that extend at a slight angle thereto and are pref erably secured to thelaterally extending portions 21 of thehinge parts 22 bytlie rivets 23 that are used to secure the lateral portions 21 tothe inner depending flange 7 of the deck lid. The other ends ofthe rods are preferably provided with flattened por- I tions 24 that extend at a slight angle thereto and are preferably spot welded to the outer depending flange 7 of the deck lid. To prevent the crossed rods 18 and 19 from rattling I preferably provide a yieldable block or cushion member 27 that preferably engages the inner face of the lid 4 and is provided with suitable grooves or channels 28 for receiving the rods 18 and 19 respectively. As an added precaution these rods are preferably welded togetherat the point of intersectionthereotbefore the resilient 10100162? is mountedthereon. To strengthen the lid further, I preferably provide a sheetnietal linislr strip iltithat preferably extendspaerossthe outer end and along the opposite sides of the lid and is provided at its lower edge with a return-bent flange 28' that enibraeesthe lower edges of the outer and side flanges 7 and holds the same together.
Thus the finish strip 26 connects the pen clin g rear and. side images 7 and thereby materially re-intorcesthe deck lid in addition to improving thefgeneral' appearance thereof. Anysnitableqneans lnayhe u'sed to secure the finishstripfiti to theouter and side flanges T of the (leek lid. a
For holding the li l in .elosed position, I preferably provideja snital'ile loelt 29 having a reeiprocatorybolt 30, that 1st adaptedto eii gaie aenitable keepertnot shown) below the deeli 2 attlie rear edge of the opening l. For nionnting'the look easin i upon the lid, there is a metal ttaehing plate 31 that is preferablyseenred to tliejnppei' faee of the lock easing and is praviaea at its rearedge with an upstanding fianhe 32 that isriveted' to the outer depending flange T of the deck lid and to the central portion 33 of the finish strip 26. In order that the proper key (not shown) may be us'edjto operate the lock bolt 30,, the plate 31 is preferably provided with a struek-out portion 3st providing an elongated opening 35Whieh is in alignment with the liey openingEG in. the look casing and a suitable opening 37 in the declilid l. a
\Vhile beliered amen-o the fore going description, the nature and advantages of the invention will .be readily apparent, I desire to have it nnderstood that]: do not limit myself to what is herein shown and deserihed', and that sneh changes maybe resorted to hen desired as fall within the seop'e ofn liat iselainied. diet I ela ini as in inrention 1; The con'ibinatioii: with ,a vehi ele may deeli lid', of means torreintoreing said lid ineluding crossed members terininally seoiired theretof and' a yield able member engaging said lid emit-meg reeesses therein receiving the crossed ineinhersaforesaid.
