IRONING MACHINE.

Application filed April 28, 1925, Serial No. 26,444, and in Denmark July 12, 1924.

My invention relates to a machine for ironing of all kinds of washing, also of full shirts.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows the machine in side view, partly in section; and l Figs. 2 and 3 details, respectively 1n front view and in top view.

A stand 1 carries a lodged a slide 3, on which is mountedv the lower iron 4 of the ironing machine, the iron 4 resting partly on balls 5, vpartly be ing supported by spring-urged bolts 6, so that it gets a certain mobility about its longitudinal axis. The upper iron 7, being longer than the lower one, is suspended in arms 8 rotatable on a shaft 9, about'which the iron 7 by means of a handle 10 can be swungI in the direction of the arrow, so as to be brought in the position 7 limited by stops 26. The upper as well as the lower iron can be heated for instance by gaspipes 11. The lower iron has a suitable covering A12, rendering it serviceable as an ironing underlayer, while the upper iron has a -semicircular recess 13, Fig. 3, corresponding to the foremost part of the band of a full shirt, and in front of which on the table 2 a` suitable supporting .arrangement forming no part of my invention may be placed, cooperating in wellknown manner during the ironing of the shirt-front with the recess 13 to shape the band. vDuring this part of the ironing the slide 3stands still in the posi.- tion shown by full lines in Figs. 2 and 3, while the slide, when the ironing of the shirt-front is finished. by means of a handle 14 or the like is shifted to the position 3, so that the lower iron 4 no longer registers with the recess 13 and so is not hit by this, when the upper iron. after lifting, is brought down in the working position, the kind of washingbeing changed.

By lifting of the upper iron 7 after disconnection of a locking pedal 25 of well known kind, a pedal 15 is brought up in the position 15, being, by a combination of bars 16, 17, 18, influenced from a shaft 19, following the movement of the upper iron. With the bar-combination is, by a link 20, connected an angle lever 21 or the like, the position of which can be altered fby turning a nut 22 on a screw-rod 23, so that the pressure exercised by treading down the pedal table 2, wherein 15, when the upper iron by means of the handle 10 is brought in working position, can be varied.

When for instance a shirthas to be ironed, beginning with the front part, andthe coacting irons beforehand are heated, the upper iron is lifted with the handle 10, and

the slide 3 brought in the position shown by full lines, the shirt-front, which is not quite dry, is spread outv on the covering 12 of the lower iron, and the arrangement' for holding the band ofthe shirt at the same time brought. in position. Thereupon the upper iron is sunk, so that the recessed portion 13 grasps about the band of the shirt, whereupon the pedal 15 is pressed down from the position 15a to that shown by full lines. By the pressure thus eifected on the material, the ironing is accomplished.,

The upper iron having been lifted again, the slide is slid throu h an opening 24, Fig. 3, in the` table to the position 3, and the different parts of the shirt are successively spread out on the covering of' they lower iron and ironed by sinkin of the upper one and treading down of t e pedal, till the ironing is imshed. The slide remains in the position 3a durin the ironing of all other parts of the washing than just shirtand collar-fron the recess 13 being inactive, as long as t e slide rests in the said position.

As to details my machine may be varied without departing from the principle of the invention, the upper iron for instance may be movably arranged about its longitudinal axis instead of the lower one.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In ironing machines in which a swingable upper iron operated by means of a lever and pedal connection co-acts with a lower iron, the combination of an upper iron havf ing a terminal recess, with a lower iron shorter than the upper iron, and a handle provided with means for adjusting the lower iron in a longitudinal direction relatively tothe upper iron to render the recessed portion of the upper iron either cooperative or noncooperativewith the lower iron when the upper iron swings down on the lower iron, for the purpose specified.,
