This invention relates, generally to an improved construction of mangle or ironing machine; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to an improved construe tion of mangle provided with means for supplying and applying steam or other liquid vapor to the goods during the pressing operations of the mangle.
The invention has for its principal object to provide in combination with a mangle or ironing machine, a novel construction and arrangement of means for generating water vapor or steam and delivering the same against the face or faces of the goods subjected to the pressing operations of the mangle, to dampen the goods so as to assure the production of a smooth and wrinkleless condition of the latter as they issue from the mangle. The invention also contemplates, in connection with the novel structural features of the machine, the use of water vapor or other vaporized liquid, either as a vehicle or as the direct agent for treating the goods, subjected to the pressing action of the mangle, to apply thereto substances suitable for sterilizing, dyeing, germ-proofing, insect-proofing, or for other similar desired effects.
Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood-from the following detailed description of this invention.
With the various objects of this invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel mangle or ironing machine hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the claims appended thereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and l together constitute afront elevation of a mangle or ironing machine, made according to and embodying the principles of this invention; Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on line A-A in Figure 1; and Figure is an end elevation of the machine.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. on an enlarged scale. of one form of generator for producing steam or other liquid vapor; Figure 5 is a detail transverse section, taken on line B-B in Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a detail transverse section, taken y, on line CC in Figure 1, but drawn on an enlarged scale; and Figure 7 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal section of the discharge nozzle or header of the generator.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views. to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the frame-work of the mangle, which is provided with transverse vertical end-frames 2. Rotatably mounted for longitudinal extension between the upper portions of said end-frames 2 is a main ironing roll or cylinder 3, the journals 4 of which are supported in bearing portions 5 connected with said end-frames. Said main ironing roll or cylinder 3 is heated in any suitable or convenient manner, as, e. g., by providing an electrical heating means 6 within its hollow interior. Said main ironing roll or cylinder 3 may be driven from any suitable source of power. A convenient means for supplying driving power to all the rotatable elements of the machine may be an electric motor 7, which is preferably supported upon a horizontal platfrom or shelf 8, secured to and projecting from one of said end-frames 2. The armature shaft 9 of said motor 7 isprovided at one end with a driving pulley 10, which operates the drive belt 11 running over a driven pulley 12 fixed on one of the journals 4 of said main ironing roll or cylinder 3.
1 Also rotatably mounted for longitudinal extension between the upper portions of said end frames 2 are a pair of pressure rolls 13 and 14, which are located above and so as to be tangent to the main ironing roll or cylinder 3. Said pressure rolls 13 and 14 are respectively provided with shafts 15 and 16 which are supported in suitably located bearing portions connected with said end frames. The surfaces of said pressure rolls 18 and 14 are preferably covered with :1- padding 17. Said pressure rolls 13 and 1 1 are respectively driven in directions opposite to the direction of rotation of said main ironing roll or cylinder 3, and to this end may be intcrgeared with the latter, by providing a journal 4 of the ironing roll or cylinder 3 with a driver gear 18, and the shafts 15 and 16 respectively with driven gears 19. and 20 which operatively mesh with said driver gear 18.
Cooperating with the upper surface of said pressure roll 13 is a manually controlled ironing member 21, which is movable toward and away from said pressure roll 13 by supporting the same upon the free ends of lever arms 22. which are fulcrumed on the shaft 16 ofthepressure roll 14. Said ironing 2 member 21 may belheated in any suitable or convenlent manner, as, e. g., by providing within'its" chambered interior 23 an electrical heating element 24. The chan'lbered interior 23 of said ironing member 21 provides an internal steam chambe above the pressing face 25 thereof: and said pressing face is provided with a plurality of perforations or vents 26, leading from saidsteam chamber to the external surface of said pressing face 25, so that when steam or other liquid vapor is supplied to said steam chamber, the same may be extravasated from the pressing face of said ironing member 21, when the latter is in use. -The movement of the ironing member 21 may be manually controlled by handle devices 27 which project from the body of the same.
Fixed in desired locations relative to said ironing roll and pressure rolls, so as to be supported-by said framework 1, are shelves or platforms 28 to support the goods as they pass to and from the said rolls during operation of the machine. Also connected with and supported by said frame-work 1 is an auxiliary platform 29, which extends'above the pressure roll 14 toward the pressure roll 13, so that goods may be fed across the same to pass between said pressure roll 13 and said normally controlled ironing member 21.
The mangle is also provided with an auXiliarv ironing attachment suitable for ironing collars, cutlsand similar small pieces. This attachment consists of a padded pressure roll 30 mounted on the free exterior end of the shaft 16 ot' the pressure roll 14, so that said padded pressure roll 30 projects longitudinally" from one end of the machine. Pivotally supported by a lever-means 31 from the end-frame 2 adjacent to said padded pressure roll 30, is a vertically movable pressing iron 32, which extends longitudinally above the roll 30, and which is normally separated or raised from engagementwith the roll 30 by means of a spring 33. Said pressing iron 32 is operatively actuated. so as to be carried into engagement with the upper surface of said padded pressure roll 30, by means of a treadle 34 which is fulcrumed in connection with the lower portion of said adjacent end frame 2, and which is interconnected with said lever means 31 by means of a link 35. Said pressing iron 32 may be heated in any suitable or convenient manner, as c. g.. by providing within its body an electrical heating element 36. The lower portion of said pressing iron 32. above its pressing face 37. is provided with a steam chamber 38. The pressing face 37 is provided with a plurality of perforations or vents 38, leading-from said steam chamber 33 to the external surface of said pressing face. so that when steam or other liquid vapor is supplied to said steam chamber 38, the same may be extrz 'asated from the pressing face of said pressing iron 32 when the latter is in use.
Supported in connection with the lower portion of said frame-work 1 is a horizontal platform 39. Mounted on said platform 39 is a steam generator or liquid vaporizer device for supplying steam or other vapor for application to the goods subjected to the pressing or ironing elements of the mangle. Said generator or vaporizer comprises :1 casing 40 which may be formed by a suitable casting, and which is shaped to provide an interior intake chamber 41. Leading into the lower end of said intake chamber 41 is an air intake pas age 42 which is provided, adjacent to its outer end, with a butterfly or throttle valve 43. The inner end of said air intake passage 42 is upturned to extend vertically upward into .said intake chamber 41, and is internally formed adjacent to its discharge end to provide a restricted portion or Venturi tube portion 44. Also connected with said casing 40, and alined below the upturned discharge end of said air intake passage 42 is a liquid intake chamber 45. Extending upwardly from said liquid intake chamber 45 into said upturned discharge end of said air intake passage 42 is a liquid discharge iet 46, the upper discharge extremity of which is located within said restricted or Vcnturi tube portion 44 of said air passage 42. Connected with said liquid intake chamber 45 is a liquid delivery means, the same comprising a supply basin or reservoir 47, which is connected by a delivery conduit or pipe 47 with said intake chamber 45. As shown in the drawings a liquid as, e. g., water, is discharged into said supply basin or reservoir 47 from a portable container or carboy 48, which is supported and related to the supply basin or reservoir 47 in such manner as to automatically maintain a liquid level substantially alined with the extremity of the discharge jet 46, whereby a supply of liquid is constantly maintained at the dischargejet during operation of the mechanism. To this end said supply basin or reservoir 47 is provided in its bot-- ing perforations 50 in its walls affording communication between the interior 51 of said supporting boss and the interior of said supply basin or reservoir 47. and so positioned as to determine the line of liquid in said basin or reservoir. Extending centrally upward through the interior 5]. of said supporting boss 49, and so as to project above the upper end of the same. is a tubular spur duct 52 provided at its upper end with a piercing point 53. Said spur duct 52 is provided in its upper portion with intake openings or perforations 54 and in its lower portion with outlet openings or perforations 55 leading into the interior 51 of said supporting boss 49. The portable container or earboy 48, which contains the main supply of liquid. is provided with a neck portion 56, the mouth of which is initially closed by a perforable sealing means or closure 5?. To'operatively relate the container or carboy 48 and its content to the supply basin or reservoir 47. said container or carboy is mverted and then inserted into the upper open end of the basin or reservoir until its iealed neck comes to rest upon the upper end of the annular supporting bots49. In thus positioning the container or carboy 48, the piercing point of the spur duct 52 is caufed to pierce the closure 57 and enter the neck portion 56 so that the liquid content of the container or carboy is permitted to flow through the intake perforations 54 into the interior of the spur duct 52, thence through the outlet openings into the interior 51 of the supporting bo s 49. and thence through the perforations 50 of thesupporting boss 49 into the interior of the basin or re"ervoir 47. The liquid will rise in the basin or reservoir until the perforations 50 of the supporting boss are submerged. whereupon flow from the container or carboy will cease, and the desired level of liquid in the supply basin or reservoir will be attained. Since the sides of the basin 47 but loosely embrace the carboy 48, air may pass into the former around the latter, or a bufler ring pervious to air may be employed, as shown in Figure 6.'0r any other desired means of air admission may be provided. The level of liquid in the basin or reservoir controls and maintains the proper level of liquid in the discharge jet 46, and as liquid is discharged from the latter so that the level in the-basin or reservoir tends to lower, the perforations 50 of the supporting boss 49 will be uncovered to the admission of air to and outflow of liquid from the container or carboy until normal level in the basin or reservoir is regained; this operation is automatic and produces a constantly controlled flow of liquid to the discharge jet 46.
The casing 40 is closed on its forward side by acover-plate 56. having a centrally disposed outwardly projecting neck 57 providing a discharge passage 58. Said neck 57 is externally threaded so that an auxiliary casing 59 may be coupled therewith. Said auxiliary casing 59 provides a vaporizing chamber 60, with which said discharge passage 58 communicates. Said auxiliary casing 59 is also provided at its rearward side with an annular space adapted to form a heating chamber (31 closed by a cover plate (32. Mounted within said heating chamber 61 is an electrical heating element (53. adapted to generate heat to be transferred through the walls of said auxiliary casing 59 to the interior of said vaporizing chamber 60. The lower end of said vaporizing chamber 60 is provided with a depending extension (#4 which provides a well or trap 65 to receive condensation. Said auxiliary casing 59 is closed at its outer side by a cover-plate 66, also hav ing a centrally disposed outwardly projecting neck (S7, into which is threaded a discharge nozzle or header 68 having a downwardly and inwardly sloping or inclined underside 69 adapted to drain any condensation back into the vaporizing chamber 60 and thence into the well or trap (35.
Mounted within said intake chamber 41, so I as to rotate therein, is a combined blower and nebulizer T0. Said blower and nebulizer 70 is located intermediate the air intake passage 42 and the discharge passage 58, so that it exerts a suction effect relative to the former and an impulsion effect relative to the latter. Mounted within said vaporizing chamber 60, so as to rotate therein, is a rotary hotplate 71, which is disposed intermediate the passage 58 and the discharge nozzle or header 68.
Said blower and nebulizer 70 and said rotary hot plate 71 may be driven in any manner and from any source of power found desirable. In the arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings. I have utilized the motor 7. which drives the ironing and pressure rolls of the machine, as the sourceof power for said blower and nebulizer 70 and rotary hot-plate 71, and to this end the inner or opposite end of the armature shaft 9 is extended through the intake chamber -11 and into the vaporizing chamber 60 so that the said blower and nebulizer 70 and rotary hot-plate 71 may be fixed thereon so as to be driven thereby.
\Vhen the machine is put in operation, and the above described generator or vaporizer is actuated. the latter functions as follows The combined bower and nebulizer 70 is rapidly rotated within the intake chamber 41. with the result that a stream of-air is sucked through the air intake passage 42. The entering air stream is accelerated .at the restriction of the intake passage. provided by the. Venturi tube portion 44-. so that a liquid, e. g. water, supplied to the discharge jet 46 is drawn or sprayed into said air stream, and roughly mixed therewith as the same enters said intake chamber 41. The admixture of air and water thus drawn into the intake chamber 41 is thoroughly agitated by the rotating blower and nebulizer 70, so that the water content is mechanically broken up into fine particles, which are thoroughly intermixed with and suspended in the air, thus forming a fine mist; in other words the initially entering admixture of air and water is nebulized, that is, formed into mist. Any heavy particles of water. not sufficiently broken up or nebulized, are thrown by the centrifugal force of the blower and nebulizer 70 to the outer circumferential walls of the intake chamber 41, down i which they descend by gravity into a depending well or trap 41 at the lower side of the casing 40. This well or trap 41 is more N or less heated by the heat transferred through its walls from the heating chamber 61, so that water collecting therein during .operation of the generator is vaporized and returned into the mist discharged from the intake chamber 41 into the vaporizing chamber 60.
The mist-like admixture of air and water formed in the intake chamber 41, in the manner above described. is propelled by the rotation of the blower and nebulizer outwardly from said intake chamber 41, through the passage 58 into the heated vaporizing chamber 60. As the mist-like admixture of air and water enters the vaporizing chamber 60 it impinges against the surface of the rotating hot-plate 71, which is kept hot by the heat radiated into the vaporizing chamber 60 from the heating chamber 61. The finely divided particles of moisture in the admixture upon striking said hot-plate are finally vaporized, thus producing a water vapor or steam which is forced onward, by the propulsion effects of the blower and nebulizer 7 0, around the periphery of said hot-plate 71 and thence into the discharge nozzle or head er 68, tobe thence distributed to the points of use, as will now be described.
Suitably supported in connection with the frame-work 1 of the machine, so as to 'be disposed parallel with and adjacent to the forward or goods receiving side of the ironing roll or cylinder 3. and beneath the path of the goods passed between the latter and the pressure rolls 13 and 14. is a tubular distributer head or vapor emission device 72, provided throughout its length with a plurality of discharge vents 73. Water vapor or steam from the generator or vaporizer is delivered to said distributer head or emission device 72 by a conduit 74 which is connected to extend from said nozzle or header 68 to said distributer head or emission device;
Suitably supported in connection with the frame-work 1 of the machine, so as to be disposed parallel with and adjacent to the ironing roll or cylinder 3, and above the path of the goods passed between the latter and the pressure rolls 13 and 14 (being preferably located between the pressure rolls l3 and 14), is another tubulardistributer head or vapor emission device 75, also provided throughout its length with a plurality of discharge vents 76. Water vapor or steam from the generator or vaporizer is delivered to said distributer head or emission device 75 by a conduit 77, which is connected to extend from said nozzle or header 68 to said distributer head or emission device 75.
lVater vapor or steam from the generator or vaporizer is also delivered to the steam chamber of the ironing member 21 by means of an intercoinmunicating flexible conduit 78 leading to the latter from said nozzle or header 68; and, in a similar manner, water vapor or steam from the generator or vaporizer is delivered to the steam chamber 38 of the pressing iron 32 by means of an inter-communicating flexible conduit 79 leading to the latter from said nozzle or header 68.
Each of the delivery conduits 74, 77, 78 and 79, communicate with said nozzle or header 68 through a control or shut-off valve 80, so that the supply of water vapor or steam may be selectively delivered at will to any one or more points on the machine where the ironing or pressing operations are being carried out.
When pressing or ironing goods by passing the same between the main ironing roll or cylinder 3 and pressure rolls 13 and 14, water vapor or steam may be selectively extravasated from one or both of the distributer heads or emission devices 72 and 75 so as to dampen or treat either one or both sides of the goods subjected to such pressing operation.
When utilizing the manually controlled ironing member 21, water vapor or steam may be administered to goods passed between the latter and the pressure roll 13, by extravasation thereof through the vents 26 in the pressing face 25 of said ironing member.
When utilizing the auxiliary ironing attachment provided by the pressing iron 32. water vapor or steam maybe administered to goods or articles passed between the latter and the padded pressure roll 30, by extravasation thereof through the vents 38 in the pressing face 37 of said pressing iron.
It will also be understood that liquids other than pure water, or water mixed with suitable chemical agents, may be provided and vaporized in the generator for delivery in connection with the pressing or ironing operations to apply to the goods undergoing the pressing operations. a vapor charged with the desired chemical agent suitable for germ-proofing, insect-proofing, dyeing,
starching, or for otherwise treating the goods in a desired manner while pressing or ironing the same.
I am aware that forms of generators or Vaporizers, other than that above described, may be employed to initially produce a goods treating steam or vapor for delivery to the various ironing or pressing means of the machine; hence, in its broader aspects I do not limit this invention to the use of the particular type of generator or vaporizer illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and above described. I am also aware that other changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts of my novel construction of mangle, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of this invention as described in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit this invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as set forth in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. In combination with a mangle provided with rotary pressing means and means to heat the same, of an air and liquid mixing means, means for supplying liquid to said mixing means, means for vaporizing the liquid content of the air and liquid mixture, means for distributing the vaporized mixture for application to goods undergoing a press ing operation, said liquid mixing means ineluding a power driven impeller means for force feeding the mixture and resultant vapor. 1
2. In a mangle, a heated rotary ironing roll, pressure rolls cooperating with said ironing roll, means for driving said ironing and pressure rolls, an air and liquid mixin means, means for supplying-liquid to said mixing means, means for vaporizing the liquid content of the air and liquid mixture, means for applying the vaporlzed mixture to goods passed between said ironing and pressure rolls, and means for conveying the vaporized mixture to said applying means, said liquid mixing means including a power driven impeller means for force feeding the mixture and resultant vapor.
3. In a mangle, a heated rotary ironing roll, pressure rolls cooperating with said ironing roll, means for driving said ironing and pressure rolls, an air and liquid mixing means, means for vaporizing the liquid content of the air and liquid mixture, a vapor emission device for applying vapor to one side of the goods passed between said ironing and pressure rolls, a second vapor emission device for applying vapor to the opposite side of the goods passed between said ironing and pressure rolls. and means for conducting the vaporized mixture to said emis. sion means, said liquid mixing means includ ing a power driven impeller means for force feeding the mixture and resultant vapor.
