BAR SUPPORT.
Application filed February This invention relates to bar supports and spacers and in its principal fillllQOtlllllGllt is applied to devices for supporting re1nforcing bars used in the construction of concrete roads. Bar supports and spacers of this general class usually include a rod having a pm portion adapted to be driven into the ground or other supporting surface and a spacing arm extending transversely thereto for spacing the reinforcing bars from the sides of the mold.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a bar support and spacer of this kind having an improved form of hanger for supporting the reinforcing bar; to provide improved means for movably mountlng the hanger on the supporting rod so as to facilitate laying of the reinforcing bars; and to provide improved means for locking the hanger to the rod.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying dra ving, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective of a bar support in its elevated position prior to driving the pin into the ground, part of a side mold being also shown and a reinforcing bar being shown in dotted outline.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the pin driven into the ground.

In the form shown, the improved bar supports are used for supporting reinforcing bars 1 disposed horizontally and embedded in the concrete a uniform distance above'the ground 2. Certain of the bar supports, which support the outer rows of bars, are provided also with means for spacingthe outer rows a uniform distance from the vertical side walls 3 which form the molds for the sides of the road.
In the form shown, the device comprises a supporting member 4 having a pin portion 2, 1927. Serial No. 165,372.
5 and a spacing arm 6 extending at substantially right angles to each other and arranged to support a hanger 7, which is adapted to support the reinforcing bar.
The supporting member 4 preferably is made of wire of heavy gage which possesses the essential. rigidity and which may be bent readily to the desired form.
The hanger 7 preferably comprises a sheet metal stamping having an upstanding flange 8 slidably engaging the arm 6 and a base part 9 adapted to embrace the pin 5. Formed in the flange 8, is an aperture 10 through which the arm 6' extends. Axial movement of the hanger 7 along the arm 6 is limited by shoulders 11 struck outfrom the arm. The base part 9 is bifurcated to provide a slot 12, for receiving the pin 5, and a pair of fingers 13 adapted to embrace the pin. Projecting inwardly from one of the fingers 13, is a shoulder 14 adapted to secure the hanger against accidental withdrawal from the pin 5. The width of the slot 12, at the shoulder 14, is less than the thickness of the part of the pin 5 which is embraced by the fingers 13, so as to necessitate a slight springing of the resilient fingers 13 in forcing the shoulder 14 past the pin to interlock the hanger and supporting member.
Struck out from the pin 5, are shoulders 15 adapted to supportthe outer end of the hanger base 9, so as to secure the hanger against sagging under the weight of the reinforcing bar.
Embracing the pin portion 5, is a flat hear ing plate 16 having an aperture 17 through which the pin extends. Struck out from the pin 5 on opposite sides of the plate 16, are shoulders 18 for securing the plate against axial shifting. The bearing plate 16 is spaced from the hanger 7 the distance which it is desired to space the reinforcing bars above the ground or other supporting surface.
In operation, before the supports are driven into the ground, one of the supports may be used as a marker or gage for marking a line in substantially parallel spaced relation to each of the side molds 3, along which the outer rows of supports are to be driven. In using a support as a gage, it is held in one hand in a plane substantially perpendicular to the mold, with the arm 6 disposed horizontally in sliding engagement with the mold and the pin 5 in engagement with the bar is lifted into engagement with the bightsof the supporting members 4c and the hangers 7 are then shifted into position for supporting the bars. With this improved construc tion and arrangement of parts, the reinforcing bars may be laid on the ground preparator-y to setting the supports and then merely lifted to the hangers after the pins 5 have been driven into the ground.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and de scribed, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a supporting member having two portions disposedtransversely to each other to form a bight, and a hanger adapted to support a bar in said bight, said hanger having a part slidably supported on one of said portions and another part movable into and out of interlocking engagement with the other portion by the axial shifting of said hanger longitudinally of said one portion.
2. A device of the class described comprising a supporting member having two portions disposed transversely to each other to form a bight, a hanger adapted to support a bar in said bight, said hanger having a part slidably engaging one of said portions and another part adapted to be move-d into and out of interlocking engagement with the other portion by the axial shifting of said hanger longitudinally of said one portion, and means on said. other portion adapted to support said other part of the hanger.
3. A device of the class described comprising a member having a portion. adapt-ed fornpright support and a second portion disposed transversely thereto to provide a bight, a hanger adapted to support a bar in said bight, said hanger having sliding engagement with one of said portions and adapted for interlocking engagement with the other, and a shoulder on said upright portion adapted to support a part of said hanger.
4. A device of the class described comprising a member having a portion adapted for upright support and a second portion disposed transversely thereto to provide a bight, a hanger adapted to support a bar in said bight, said hanger having slldlng engagement with said second portion and adapted for interlocking engagement with said upright portion, and a shoulder on said upright portion adapted to'support a part of said hanger.
5. A device of the class decribed comprising a member having a portion adapted for upright support and a. second portion disposed transversely thereto to provide a bight, a hanger adapted to support a bar in said bight, said hanger having sliding engagement with said transverse portion and having a bifurcated part adapted to embrace said uprightportion, and a shoulder on said upright portion adapted to support the lei-- turcated part of said hanger.
6. A device of the class described comprising a member having a portion adapted for upright support and a second portion disposed transversely thereto to provide a big-ht, a hanger adapted to support a bar in said bight, said hanger having a part slidably engaging said transverse portion and another part movable into and out of interlocking engagement with said upright portion by the axial shifting of said hanger relative to said transverse portion, and means on said: upright portion for supporting said other part of the hanger.
7. A device of the class described comprising a member having a portion adapted for upright support and a second portion disposed transversely thereto to provide a bight, and a hanger adapted to support a bar in said bight, said hanger having a part slidably supported on said transverse portion and a bifurcated part movable into and out of in terlocking engagement with said uprightportion. by the aXial shifting of said hanger longitudinally of said transverse portion.
8. A de ice oi the class described comprising a supporting member having two portions disposed transversely to each other to form a bight, a hanger adapted to sup port a bar in said bight, said hanger having a part slidably supported on one of said portions and a slotted part movable into and out of interlocking engagement-with the other portion, and a shoulder on said slotted part arranged to engage said other portion for securing said hanger against accidental withdrawal from said supporting member.
