This invention relates to improvements in railway devices, and especially to gauge or tie-rods for railway rails.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a gauge or tie-bar or rod for railway rails which. may be formed of a single piece of ductile metal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a one piece tie-bar or rod for railway rails which may be applied to the rails without removing the rail spikes or moving either of the rails.
A third object of the invention is to pro vide a gauge or tie-bar for railway rails which is provided with an integral clamping lug adapted to be bent over and upon the .rail flange to form a retaining hook for the rail and to prevent spreading thereof.
Otlier objects of the invention are mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved gauge or tie-bar applied to a pair of railway rails; Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof; Fig. 3 is a. fragment, in top plan View, illustrating the invention as formed on the end of a gauge or tie-bar ready for use and prior to bending the clamping lugs into operative position over the rail flange; and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4.i of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawing.
Referring to the details of the drawing the numerals 1 and 2 represent a pair of railway rails in spaced relation and adapted to be held in proper relation and gauge, and against spreading, by a tie-bar 3 which is arranged beneath the rail bases and transversely thereof. The bar 21, which is preferably made of flat malleable metal, such as soft steel, may be provided with the usual integral hook at which is adapted to engage over the edge of the base flange 5 of the rail 2, the rail 1 being otherwise engaged and connected with the invention, as hereinafter described. The hook 4 is preferably of the same thickness as the body of the bar 8, and the opposite end of the bar is also provided with integral abutment and clamping means to hold the rail 1 in position, the abutment comprising a substantially L shaped end section 6 extending transversely of the bar, and the clamping means including a pair of lugs 7 and 8 integral with said abutment element and extending upwardly and laterally there from.
Normally the clamping lugs 7 and 8 extend at substantially right angles to the body of the bar 3 to enable that end of the bar to be arranged beneath the base of a rail 1 already spiked down, and with the hook t engaging the flange of the rail 2, as described, and the abutment 6 in contact with the edge of rail flange 9. When the tie-bar is thus arranged the lugs 7 and S are disposed substantially parallel with the rail 1 and the edge of the flange 9, and it is then a simple and easy matter for the operator to bend the clamping lugs inwardly at substantially right angles above and into contact with the upper surface of the rail flange 9, Figs. 1 and 2.
Preferably, the angular abutmentsection 6 is formed as heavy and thick as the body of the bar 3 to impart strength and rigidity thereto, and preferably the lugs 7 and 8 are thinner and lighter than the bar body or the abutment 6 to enable the operator to readily bend them to the desired position with a hammer or other suitable tool.
I claim 1. A railway gauge or tie-bar provided with a hook at one end and an integral clamping lug at the other end thereof, said lug being adapted to be bent laterally over a rail flange.
2. A railway gauge or tie-bar provided with a hook at one end and an integral abutment section and clamping lug at the other end thereof, said abutment section being substantially L shaped and said clamping lug being adapted to be bent laterally over a rail flange. 8. A railway gauge or tie-bar provided with a hook at one end and an integral abutment section and clamping lug at the other end thereof, said abutment section and clamping lug being combined, the former rigid, and the latter adapted to be bent late ally over a rail flange.
t. A railway gauge or tie-bar provided with a hook at one end and a substantially L shaped abutment at the other end thereof, said abutmentbeing provided with an integral clamping lug normally extending transversely of the tie-bar and adapted to be bent laterally over a rail flange.

a rail flange, the other end of said bar being provided with a malleable clamping lug normally extending transversely of the bar and of lighter construction than the bar body, said lug being adapted to be bent laterally over the flange of a rail already secured in position.
6. A railway gauge or tie-bar comprising a body section having a hook at one end and provided with a transverse abutment element at the opposite end thereof, said abutinent element being adapted to engage the edge of a rail flange to maintain the rail gauge and said abutment element being provided with an integral clamping lug of lighter construction which extends transversely of the tie-bar and is adapted to be bent laterally over a rail flange.
