IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,853, dated Jute 22, 1875;

application tiled October 10, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, FRANO1S MCDANIEL, of Philadelphia, in 'the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Washing Vindows, Carriages, Ste.; and I do hereby declare the following; to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to makeand use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse section. a front view.

My invention has for its object to provide a fountain-brush, especially applicable to washing windows, carriages, and other articles requiring copious streams of water.

Myinvention consists in applying to a brush a perforated or slotted pipe, having a flexible connection with a hydrant or waterreservoir, as hereinafter fully described.

Beferrin g to the accompanying drawing, A is a brush of the construction usually employed t'or washing windows. B represents a pipe afxed thereto in any suitable manner, as by ears b b, fastened'by screws.

The ends ot' this pipe are closed,`and thel center connected with a flexible tube, C, having communication with a hydrant.

The pipe B has numerous perforations, or an equivalent slot or slots, so arranged that the water conveyed by the flexible tube will be distributed evenly over the surface of the bristles a.

A brush thus constructed will be found ad- Fig. 2 is mirably adapted for cleansing purposes gener# ally, and may be used to great advantage on living creatures, as well as inanimate objects.

A iiesh-brush for men, and a horse-brush for the equine race, furnished with my improvement, will conduce greatly to the comfort of the beings on whom they are utilized( The improvement may also be applied to brooms, and will facilitate greatly the scrubbing and cleansing of sidewalks.

I am aware that a fountain-sponge has already been employed for washing windows, but it does not give satisfaction, owing to the fact that the water concentrates in such sponge and flows down the handle, to the exceeding discomfort and damage of the operator. S0, too, the water cannot be distributed over the same extent of area. rEhe deviceis much heavier, and not adapted to the various attritional uses (as, for instance, scrubbing4 pavements and oors,) to which my improvement may be applied. a

It is obvious that after a brush to whichthe distributing-pipe has been applied is worn out, it may be discarded, and a newonesupplied the pipe itself', under ordinary circumstances, suftcing for a dozen or more successlve brushes.

I do not claim broadly as my invention the combination, with a brush ot' an irrigatin g appliance, as I am Well aware that various expedients have been used for supplying` the bristles with a continuous flow of water, but they have not hitherto been adopted for application to the ordinary household brush. rlhe object of my invention is to furnish a cour ivance which may be readily attached to nd detached from a brush of ordinary make, and which will take water from an ordinary hydrant or supply-pipe, and distribute 1t evenly and continuously over the brush.

This invention is then to be distinguished from other devices of the class to which it belongs in that for the attachment and use ofthe sprinkler the back of the brush requires n0 modification. The device may be readily applied to any ordinary brush, and when the latter wears out the sprinkler may be detached and applied to a new one. Thus, one sprinkler will last for years.

What I claim as my invention is The detachable brush-moistenin g apparatus, consisting ofthe T-tube B, having perforated arms, provided with eyes b for attachment to the side of the ordinary brush, substantially as shown and described.
