My invention relates to lsteam or hot water boilers .employing an induced or forced draft, the invention relating more specilically to the vpeculiar construction oi grate therefor comprising a kplurality .ot hollow Vrgrate bars adapted to receive a circulation .of .water therethrough and of ythe general type and for .the .purposes Anow well vknown in the art.

The grate units are connected together at their shouldered ends by nipples 14 screwed or otherwise inserted in suitable openings in the side walls of the units as shown in Fig. 3. The inlet pipe 5 is connected to the ends ot the two central units by a. two-way pipe l5 so that water flowing` through said pipe 5 will circulate through the units in the direction of the arrows and will finally flow through the opposite ends ot the two oute side units and through the outlet pipes 6 which are connected thereto. I have found in practice that this construction is superior to those that have preceded it for the reason that the cold water from the pipe 5 enters the units at or adjacent the central portion ot the grate where the lire is apt to be hottest and where the cooling effect is most desired to prevent burning out of the units, the

Water, which is progressively becoming more heated, leaving the grate at the extreme sides thereof Where the lire is not nearly as hot and Where the cooling effect of 'the Water is rnot as necessary as at the center of the grate. fhis construction, Iurthermore. is desirable for the reason that the fion of Water from the inlet pipe is a continuous one through one grate unit to and through the next succeeding` grate unit and finally through the outlet pipe in contradistinction to some provious constructions in Which the Water flows simultaneouf'sly from a coni-mon inlet pipe or manifold through separate grate units to a common outlet pipe or manifold. ln the latter Construction the temperature of the several streams of the Water after they leave the several units varies considerably with the result that their meeting in the outlet pipe or manifold produces pounding or thumping which is objectionable.
The sides 0f the grate units at the central portion thereof taper downwardly as indicated at 16, these tapered walls being connected to the straight side walls 10 by transverse Walls 17. The tcp edges of said ta pered sides are serrated as indicated at 18v When therefore, the units are arranged in juxtaposition longitudinally of each other Within the furnace the tapered side Walls 16 and transverse Walls 17 form air chainhers (see Fig. 6) and the serrated edges 1S form tortuous air slots so that the draftof air which may be forced into the ash pit of the furnace flows through the air chambers, through the tortuous slots and to the fire on the grate units in the combustion chamber.
To prevent any of the air from leaking or flowing from the air chambers through the spaces intermediate the walls of the grate units adjacent their ends so thatit Will all flow through the tortuous air slots described,
I have provided the sides of the units with semi-circular depressions 19 each adapted to register with a similar depression in the side of the next succeeding unit, whereby annulaiopenings are formed each receiving a pin or plug .720 which may also be utilized as a spac ing member whereby the proper space hetween the units is obtained.

llivhat l claim my invention is l. In a grate construction, a plurality of hollow grate bars arranged in parallelism longitudinally of each other and provided with reduced ends formingshouldered or tions` nipples within the spaces forme by .said shouldered portions connecting said liars together and plates covering said spaces and nipples.
2. ln a grate construction, a plurality of hollow grate bars arranged in apposition to each other with spaces therebetween forming air slots, the side Walls of Said bars being formed with rounded depressions therein each adapted to register with the depression in the Wall of the next succeeding har to form round openings and plugs entering said openings and interitting therewith for closing the ends of said air slots and for spacing said bars the proper distance apart.
