v The present invention relates to an auto- :matic brake for weaving looms obviating all attention of the weaver when the loom isstarted or stopped, orwhen themachine sis inoperative and the loom is. to be operated by. hand, for unweaving or like purposes. I
For this purpose the brake, the object of the invention, is essentially characterized in lo thatwhen the loom is stopped by the unwhich is actuated, to stop the machine,
either by hand or by any one of the supplemental mechanisms such as the Weft stop motion, the warp stop-motion, the automatic continuous weft feeding device or the like. v r
The following description with reference to the appended drawings which are given by way of example, relates to a form of construction of my said automatic brake. V
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 is the corresponding front elevation.
1V is thebrake wheel or drum, coacti11g with the leather faced brake shoe, 2, below vwhich is disposed, to assure the progressive action of the brake, an india rubber buffer which is slidable in the main body of the brake shoe; the said shoe is pivoted at 8 and iscontrolled, through suitable gear such as the rod 4:; the bell crank 5 and the rod 6, by the controlling lever 7 to which the rod is attached at 8.
The lever 7, which is actuated by the releasing devicerwhen it is disposed for uncoupling purposes in order to effect the momentary automatic braking and the auto matic brake release which immediately succeeds the braking, is pivoted to a stationary axle 9 mounted on the machine frame and is constantly urged by the spring 10 which applies it by its heel 11 against a stop 12, the said action being momentarily countercrank 5, or liketransmission gear.

acted during the braking, the'lever being then raised by the displacement of the'expansion device and applying the brake by means of the .rods' l and -6 and the bell The ascent Ofthe lever 7.contrary to the action of the spring 10,-for braking, pur
formed on its lower edge, which, is raised for a certain time depending upon the movement of the releasing device for disengaging the brake, by means of an element secured-tothe said releasing device and herein consisting of a lever 14 which is pivoted, at 1 5 ,tothe vunclutching lever 16 and has at thellower poses, is effected by the cam portion 13 end'thc heel 17, said lever 14: being held stationary and raising by its upper end, 1'8the controlling lever 7v during the displacement of t the. releasing device for disengaging the brake, but yielding, during the movement of the releasing device in the other. direction, to the starting device.
The operation of the automatic brake is as follows: During the functioning of theloom, the unclutohing lever 16, having been moved at the start in the direction of the arrow a and dash lines at 16, will be displaced when actuated by hand or by a suitable brakereleasing device, in the direction contrary to the arrow, a, thus stopping the machine. During this displacement of the releasing lever, the lever 14 which is mountedthereon, will tend, when its upper end 18 m'akes contact with the cam 13, to pivot in the contrary direction to the arrow 1), but since and assuming the position shown in the dot it bears by its heel 17 against the releasing device .16, the pivoting movement will be prevented, so that'it will remain stationary, and this will cause by the action ofits upper end 18 upon the cam 13 the ascent of the controlling lever 7 against the antagonistic action of the spring 10, so that the shoe'Q, v
will be applied against the brake wheell,
affording a progressive braking by the action of the said shoe and the presence of the said india rubber buiier. 7
This braking action is only temporary, since it isfollowed by a release of the brake shoe when the end 18 of the lever 15 has passed beyond the lowest, point of; the cam 13 of the controlling lever Y, which again descends under the action of the spring 10,
thus releasing the brake shoe; the brake release being terminated Whenthe release de vice attains its extreme position (shown 111 the full lines at 16) and the end 18 ot' the lever 14 -1'e'a"ves"t'he cam 13bit the lever 7 57 which is applied bv'its'heel stop 12 and which through the rods 4 and 6 and the bell CIfillkf) diseii g a ges thefbrake shoe 2 to such a-degree that there Will be no more friction. 7
