Description
LUBRICATING DEVICE Filed March 17. 1920 F/gi.
UNHTED STATES FATE ARTHUR V. GULLBOBJG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE BASSIGK MANUFAGTURING COMPANY, CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
. LUBRIGATING DEVICE.
Application filed March 12 1920. Serial No. 366,580.
M invention relates to improvements in v lubricating devices, and is esygecially concerned with improvements in In ricatmg devices of the type disclosed in the patent to Arthur V. Gullborg, No. 1,307,734, of June 24, 1919. This patent discloses a lubricating system comprising a plurality of nipples or coupling members adapted to-be secured to the various parts of the mechanism to lubricated,i the nipples comprisin cylindrical members having a pin exten in therethrough and from the sides thereo and a spring pressed closure for closin one end of the nipples. The projecting en s of the P111 provide means for effecting a detachable connection with a coupling member located on the free end of the flexible discharge conduit of a grease gun or compressor.
The objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a dust cap for enclosing the end of the nipple which is provided with the spring pressed closure, not only to prevent the entry of dust and dirt into the nipple, but also to protect the nipple against mechanical injury;
. Second,to provide a dust cap of the character described, which can be easily and quickly attached to and detached from a nipple; and r v Third, to provide adust cap which can be economica'll manufactured.
Other ob ects will appear as this description progresses, reference being had tothe accompanying drawin wherein, Figure 1 is a si e elevation of m 1m-' proved cap, showing it attached to a ubricator nipple, the nipple being likewise shown in sideelevation;
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section through my improved cap; and
Figure 3 is a transverse section ,taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2. I Referring to the drawings, the reference character 5. indicates the iii ple, from the opposite sides of which pro ect, the ends 6 of the pin, which supplorts a spring (not e closure 7 in its closed position. The details of construction shown), for holding t of the nipple form no part of my invention, except as they may co-act with certain features of my improved cap.
My improved cap comprises an end-piece 8 and a de nding cylindrical flange 9, which is provi ed on diametrically opposite sides with a bayonet slot 10, which extends intudinally extendin said closure.
wardl from the edge of the flange and then exten s transversely thereof, as shown in Figure 1. The side 11 of the transversely extending ortion of the slot is slightly recessed, as s own at 11, to provide a locking recess for receiving the ends 6 of the pin extending through the nipple. Soldered or otherwise secured in the to of the cap is a spiral spring 12,- which is shghtly more than one convolution in length. In applying my improved cap to the nipple, the longitudinally extending portions of the slots are first brought into registry with the ends 6 of the pin, and the cap is then moved longitudinally of the nipple. Beforethe ends 6 of the pin come into registry With the transversely extending portion of the slot, the free end 13 of the spring 12-contacts with the upper end of the nipple. then applied to the cap to compress the spring, to permit the cap to be rotated to bring the ends of the 'pins' into the transversely extendinglportions of the slot. When the pressure is t en relieved, the 'sprin expands and forces the cap upwardly wit respect to the nipple, thereby bringing the pin into the recess ormed by cuttin away the side of the slot at 11 and thus ficking the cap to the nipple. To removethe cap it is first pushed downwardly and then rotated until the pins are in registry with the longi- 'portions of the slot, when it can be with rawn from the nipple.
While I have described the details of the preferred embodiment or my invention, it is isnot limited to these details, but is capable of other adaptations and modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a lubricator nipple having a central spring pressed closure projecting from one end thereof, of a ri 'd cap telescoped over said nipple and defining a chamber around said closure, locking means at the side of said nipple for removably holding said cap in place, and annular spring means in said chamber bearin on said nipple for pressing said cap away imm 2. The combination with a lubricator nipple having a central spring pressed closure at one end thereof, of a ri 'd cap telesco ed over said nipple and deiing a cham er Pressure is to beclearly understood that my invention around said closure, locking means at the side of said nipple for removably holding said cap in place, and annular spring means in said chamber bearing on said nipple for pressing said cap away from said closure.
3. The combination with a lubricator nipple having a central spring pressed closure projecting from one end thereofof a rigid cap telescoped over said nipple and defining a chamber around said closure, locking means at the side of said nipple for removably holding said cap in place and an annular spring in said chamber'in that space between the spring pressed closure and the adjacent wall of the cap, one end of said spring being secured to the innermost end of the cap and the opposite end bearing upon the adjacent wall of the nipple whereby the cap is yieldingly forced away from the closure.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe 20 my name this 9th day of March, 1920.
ARTHUR V. GULLBORG.
