From the foregoing, it will he apparent lifts the pedalor treadle until the end of arm/1st strikes the top of lever i() thus limitthat the two springs and L18 supplement one another in their actions, both tending to elevate'the cross-head and its rams and tov raise the foot-lever.
It is to be noted particularly that the link 42 and the short arm t3 constitute a toggle which is straightened out as the pedal is depressed, and, inasmuch as such toggle has a definite range of action when its elements are brought into alignment, a Vfull depression of the foot-lever assures thatthe rams and punches will descend equal amounts on each actuation, thus enabling the workman to be certain that all rivet-heads are countersunk or embedded in the brake-lining to equal extents.
The operation ot, the apparatus will be apparent from what precedes, but it may be noted that the turret may be easily turned manually7 to bring any set of cooperating tools tothe front of the machine in position for convenient use, the cross-head, of course, turning in likey degree because its rams are directly associated with the=turret, and, furthermore, the pull-rod may also turn with the turret due to the structure ofthe c0nnection 39. Y
Adjustment of vthe punches individually maybe readily eifected by turning the ram heads 23 and in this way the depth of punching and countersinlring may be regulated as vmay be required by variations in the thickness of the brake-bands and the linings.
After the plungers or rams have'breen thus adjusted for the particular work in hand, all of the holding rivets are countersunk to a uniform depth because identityor sameness of pressure is insured by thelever and toggle actions of theV pedal.
The invention 1s not necessarily limited Vand restricted to this particular embodiment and many mechanical changes may be incorporated `therein without sacrificing any of the substantial benefits and advantages of the invention and` without departing from its substance or essence as defined by the appended claims.
We claim:
l. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a base, a hollow standard extended upwardly therefrom, a head at the top ofsaid standard, a turret revoluble on said head, rams slidable in bearings in said turret, a cross-head carrying said rams, a iirst sleeve slidable in said turret lcarrying said cross-head, a second sleeve supported by said turret and depending theretrom inside of said standard. an apertured cup on a lower part of said second sleeve, a coiled spring interposed between said cup and thelower end of said-first sleeve, a pull-rod connected to said crosshead and extending down through said two sleeves, spring and cup, a leverfulcrumed at its rear end in said base and having a lswivel connection at its front endwith said pull-rod, a pedal outside of said base fulcrumedthereon at a higher level than the fulcrum of said lever, and a toggle connection between said pedal and an intermediate part ot' said lever.
2. In a machine ot the character described, the combination ol a base, a hollow standard extended upwardly therefrom, a head at the top of said standard, a turret revoluble on said head, rainsfslidable in bearings` in said turret, a cross-head carrying said rams, a
vfirst sleeve slidable in said turret carrying said cross-head, a second sleeve supported by said turret and depending therefrom inside of said standard, an apcrtured cup on a lower part of said second sleeve, a coiled spring interposed between said cup and the lowerend of said lirst sleeve, a pull-rod connected to said crosshead and extended down through said vtwo sleeves, spring and cup, a 'pedal fulerumed on said base, a spring tending to rock said pedalupwardly, a lever 'tulcrumed in said base and having a swivel connection with said pullsrod, and a toggle connection between Ysaid pedal and lever'.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a base, a hollow standard extended upwardly therefrom, a head at the top of said standard, a turret revoluble on said head, rams slidable in bearings in said turret, a cross-headcarrying said rams, a
sleeve slidable in said turret carrying said cross-head, a pull-rod connected to said cross-head and extending down through said sleeve, a pedal 'tulcrumed on said base, spring means tending to rock said pedal upwardly, a lever tulcrumed in said base and having a swivel connection with said pullrod, and a toggle connection between said pedal and lever.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a supporting-frame, a turret revoluble on said frame, rams slidable in bearings in said turret, a cross-head carrying said rams, a pull-rod connected to said cross-head and extending down through said frame, a pedal ulcrumed on said frame, spring means tending to rock said pedal upwardly, a lever fulcrumed in said frame and having a swivel connection with said pullrod, and a toggle connection between said pedal and lever.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a supporting-frame, a turret rcvoluble on said frame, individuallyadjustable rams slidable in bearings in said turret, a cross-head carrying said rams, a pull-rod connected adjustably to said cross- `head and extending down through said frame, a pedal fulcrumed on said frame, a spring tending to rock said pedal upwardly, a lever tulcrunied in said frame and having a swivel connection with said pull-rod, and it toggle connection between said pedal and ever;
6. In a machine ofthe character described, the combination of a supporting-frame, a turret revoluble on said frame, rams slidable in bearings in said turret, a cross-head carrying said rams, a pull-rod connected to said cross-head, a pedal fuicrumed on said frame, and aftoggle connected between said pedal and pui1-rod.
7 In 'a machine of the character described, the combination ofk a support, a turret on said support, a plurality of rams Slidable in bearings in said turret, a cross-head having open-ended slots, and nuts in said slots bearing on curved surfaces of the cross-head adjacent to said slots, said rams having screw threads fitting in said nuts, whereby the rams may he easily adjusted or rremoved from the machine.
