According to the embodiment of our invention shown on the drawings, the tank comprises a bottom wall 1 with flat side walls 2, 3 and half-circular end walls 4. A
central pier 5 of elongated cross-section and rounded at opposite ends forms an endless raceway 6. Said pier 5 is provided with a central well or depression 7 within which is mounted a bearing 8 for one end of a pulpbeating roll shaft 9, the other end of said shaft being journalled in a bearing 10 which surmounts a pillar 11. Keyed to the shaft 9 is a pulley 12 over which passes a belt 55, 13 for driving the pulp beating r, 1927. Serial No. 166,337.
Mounted upon the shaft 9 between the laterally-spaced side walls 2 and 14, the latter being in the present embodiment of my invcntion, a constituent portion of the central pier 5, is a pulp-beating roll or drum 15 provided with radial blades 16. It will be seen by an inspection of Figure 2 that the laterally-spaced side walls 2 and 14 are provided with suitable extensions 2 and 14 upon the upper edges ot which may be seated a top plate or cover 17. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the opposite ends of the roll or drum 15 are spaced from the laterally-spaced side walls 2 and 14: to aiford freedom of movement to the rotating drum. These spaces, however have been the source of much trouble due to the accumulation of material around the shaft 9 and between the drum 15 and side walls 2 and 14;. i To overcome these drawbacks several devices have been employed. According to the present invention, this trouble is overcome by means of cutters of-improved construction which are now to be described.
As shown best in Figure 4E, the'laterallyspaced side walls 2 and 14 with their extensions 2 and 14 are provided with upwardly opening vertical slots 18, said slots being provided at the bottom with half-round cavities 19 for the accommodation of the shaft 9 which extends thru the lower ends of said slots. According to the present embodiment of my invention. the walls of slots 18 are preferably formed by cast iron plates 20 which are arranged in suitable rectangular recesses extending from the horizontal plane thru the axis of shatt 9 to the upper edges of side walls 2' and 14'. The tank including pier 5 and side walls 2 and 14. may be advantageously constructed of cement. Arranged in each of the slots 18 is a box -like frame 21 of channeled cross-section as may be seen from an inspection of Figures 5 and 6. Said frames 21 are thus provided with lateral flanges 21 which are secured to the oppositely-disposed cast-iron plates 20 by means of bolts 22 which extend thru said flanges and plates and into the cement behind said plates. Presented ,inwardly from each of the frames 21 are a plurality of radially-spaced blades or cutters 23 preferably of rectangular crosssection as shown. The bottom ed e 0t the flat plate of frame 21 and that of tnelowermost blade or cutter 23, are provielsdwith arcane recesses 24 so that these parts may be brought into close juxtaposition to shaft 9. Secured to the outer face of each end of the pulp-beating roll or drum 15 by means of bolts 25, is a radial cutter plate 26 which as shown in Figures 3 and 5 is provided with outwardly-presented blades or. cutters 27, said cutter plate being so positioned on the end wall of the roll or drum and said blades or cutters being radially-spaced in such away that as they revolve about the axis ofv shaft 9,. they overlap and pass between the fixed blades or cutters 23' carried by cutter frames 21.
We claim: V I
1. In a pulp-beating engine the combination with a tank, of a beater-roll operating in said tank, laterally-spaced side walls spaced from the ends of said beater-roll,
cutters mounted on the ends of said heater roll", said cutters being arranged in radiallyspaced series from the axis of said heaterroll and oppositely-presented series of cutraceway, laterally spaced side walls spaced from the ends of said beater-roll, radiallyspaced cutters mounted on the ends of the beater roll and extending in series away from the axis of said beater-roll, and series of fixed radially-spaced cutters mounted on said side walls and alternately disposed with respect to the cutters mounted on the ends of said beater roll.
3. In a pulp-beating engine the combination with a tank provided with a raceway for pulp, a beater-roll operating in said raceway, laterally-spaced side walls spaced from the ends of said beater-roll, said side walls being provided with slots opening upwardly, cutter-frames mounted in said slots, said cutter-frames being provided with inwardly-presented cutters arranged at different distances from the axis of said heaterroll, and radial cutter plates mounted on the ends of said beater-rolland provided with outwardly-presented cutters alternately disposed with respect to the cutters mounted on the cutter-frames in said slots.

In a pulp-beating engine the combination with a tank provided with a raceway for pulp, a beater-roll operating in said raceway, a rotary shaft for said beater-roll, l'iearings for said shaft, laterally-spaced side walls spaced from the ends of said beaterroll and resented upwardly from said rotary sha t, said side walls being provided with vertical slots opening upwardly thru the edges of said side walls, cutter-frames mounted in said slots, said cutter-frames being provided with radially-spaced cutters with respect to the axis of said beater'roll shaft and presented toward the adjacent end of said beater-roll, and radial cutter plates mounted on the ends of said beater-roll and provided: with series of radially-spaced cuti ters alternately disposed with respect to the cutters mounted on the cutter-frames in said slots.
5. In a pul'pbeating engine, the combination with a pulp-tank. of laterally-spaced walls forming a raceway for pulp, said side walls being provided with upwardly-opening vertical slots, a beater-roll shaft extending thru the lower ends of said slots, a radial cutter plate mounted on an end wall of said beater-roll, and a stationary cutter bracket mounted in the slot of the adjacent side wall. said cutter plate and cutter bracket being provided with alternately spaced oppositely-presented overlapping knives.
6. In apulp-beating engine, the combination with a pulp-tank provided with a central pier forming an endless raceway for pulp, of laterally spaced sidewalls presented upwardly from said central pier and an outer wall of said tanlt respectively, said side walls being provided with slots opening thru the upper edges of said side walls, a beater-roll shaft rotatable on an axis extending thru the lower ends of said slots, a pulpbeat-ing roll mounted on said shaft, and oppositely-presented alternately arranged overlapping knives mounted in one of said slots and on the adjacent end wall of said pulp-beating roll.
7. In a pulp-beating engine, the combination with a pulp-tank provided with a raceway for pulp, of a beater-roll operating in said raceway, laterally-spaced side walls spaced from the ends of said heater roll, cutter plates mounted on the opposite ends of said beater-roll and on the inner faces of said side walls, and overlapping cutters carried by said cutter-plates at opposite ends of said beater-roll.
8. In a pulp-beating engine, the combination with a pulp-tank provided with laterally-spaced side walls forming a raceway for pulp, said side walls being provided with vertical slots opening thru the upper edges of said side walls, a beater-roll shaft extending thru the lower ends of said slots, radially-spaced cutters mounted on the endwalls of said beater-roll, stationary channel frames mounted in said slots and having their flanges releasably bolted to the walls of said slots, said channel frames being provided with inwardly-presented cutters overlapping and cooperating with the cutters carried by said beater-roll.
9. In a pulp-beating engine, the combination with a pulp-tank provided with a central pier forming an endless raceway for pulp, of laterally-spaced side walls presented upwardly from said central pier and an outer wall of said tank, said side walls being of said side walls and provided with cutters provided with vertical slots opening thru spaced intermediately with respect to and 10 the upper edges of said side walls, a beateroverreaching the cutters carried by the roll shaft extending thru the lower ends of radial cutter plates on said beater roll.
