UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN BRRNDT, OF DENVER, COLORADO TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRANSOMS FOR DOORS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,794, dated June 22, 1875; application filed May 18, 1875. a
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BERNDT, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe, and Territory of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Transom for Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical side elevation with parts broken away Fig. 2, details of the fastening device.
This invention relates to cetain improvements in transoms for doors; and it consists in a transom-sash that is made to slide into a casing above, by means of a' branched cord moving Over pulleys, one of the branches of which cord is attached to the sash for the purpose of raising it, and the other attached to a suspended detent or locking-bar, which prevents the raising of the sash except by the cord upon the inside of the house, the cord being fastened below by a self-closing cam-lever, and so arranged at its branched ends, as to raise the sash and lift the lockingbar away at the same time.
In the drawing, A represents the sash of the transom, having grooves upon its edges which receive and slide over tongues attached to the frame B, to exclude dust, snow, and wind. 0 is a casing or chamber above the transom, into which the transom-sash slides when raised. 1) is a cord, which passes over pulleys E E E in the casing, and is attached to the top part of the transom-sash at one end, and is fastened at a convenient distance below by a self-acting device, F. Said device consists of a frame, a, and a lever, b, having a serrated or ridged cam edge, which presses against the cord from the weight of the lever, and holds the said cord at any adjustment. G is a branch cord, attached to cord D at one end, and at the other end to a swing detent or locking-bar, H. This locking-bar serves to hold the sash down, and acts as a safetycatch to prevent entrance from the outside by burglars, the bar being so arranged as to be removed from its locking position only by a traction upon the cord upon the inside.
By means of this improved construction and arrangement of parts, the transom may be readily adjusted at any height for ventilation, the sash automatically locked, when closed or down, and all dust, snow, 850., excluded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is'- The transomsash A, in combination with the casing O, the cord D, pulleys E E E fastening F, branch cord G, and the locking-bar H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN BERNDT. Witnesses:
