Application filed December 29, 1923. vSerial No. 633,364.
My invention relates to a cookingtop for stoves in which the top gas-burners are po-` tically over the entire burner rchamber and in which there is adapted to be fitted either a closed top or grate top that is arranged to be supported by the remainder or fixed portion of the top. A
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth inthe following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to said drawings: Y Figure l is a plan view of a stove showing the cooking top of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the stove taken on the line 2-2 in Figure l.
Figures 3 and 4 are top views of two forms of separable portions of the cooking top.
l/Vhile it has been .demonstrated that gas stoves having closed tops above the top burners have many advantages over stoves equipped with the usual grate top, users of gas stoves have been slow to purchase the former style of stove both on account of its novelty and on account of its greater first cost. In the manufacture and sale of closed top gas stoves, I have found that by providing the portion of the top above the burner chamber with a closed top section which may be readily replaced by a grate topsection of the same size, thereby providing-for either style of stove top at will, that the users of gas stoves are encouraged to purchase 'such a stove in preference to one adapted only for one style of cooking top. I therefore do not form the top in one piece extending over the Whole stove-top area, as is usual, but, rather, provide an aperture in the top above the burner chamber in which sections of different kinds may be fitted and held. In this manner I provide for a stove top of either type with the same stove structure so that 'the 1 bpreferred type of top may be used therewit f The stove top 6 of my invention comprises fixedV and removable sections 7 and 8, the latter being positioned above the burner chamber 9 of the stove 1l. To provide for the mounting of the removable section 8, I form in the fixed top section 7 a rectangular aperture having the edges 12 thereof parallel to and positioned slightly inwardly'of the sides of the burner chamber. As here shown the lower portion of the edge 12 is provided with an inwardly extending flange portion 13 whereon the section 8, which has an area substantially equal to that of the aperture, is adapted to be supported when fitted in the aperture. Preferably provided in the section 8 are removable lids lt positioned directly over the burners 16 whereby removal of a lid will allow the placing of a cooking utensil directly over the burner.
Since the chamber 9 is thus normally closed on top by means of the fixed and removable top sections, I provide for the venting of the gaseous products of combustion by providingV a vent 17 in the rear wall of the chamber.- In this manner, the heated and gas laden air is removed at the rear of the stove and is thus prevented from escaping at the front of the stove.' If for any reason the user of the stove of my invention desires use of a top of other form thanV that of the section S, replacement of this section by another such as the grated section 19 here shown may be readily effected, thus making the stove convertible to a Wide variety of top equipment and uses.
I claim: Y
l. In a stove of the character described, a fire box for solid fuel, a top-gasl burner chamber separated from the box by a corn- 'mon side wall, a one-piece cooking top arranged over said box and chamber and having integral portions thereof overlying the top edges of the front and side walls of said boxl and chamber including said common side wall and defining openings smaller in area than the associated box and chamber, top-sections provided with lid receiving perforations and removably fitted in said openings, and lids fitting in said perforations of said top sections.
2. In a stove of t-he character described, a fire box for solid fuel, a top-gas burner chamber separated fromthe box by a common side Wall, a cooking top arranged over openings, the top section over said chamber said box and chamber and having integrally provided with lid receiving perforations, 10 related portions thereof overlying the top and lidsftting in said perforations. edges of the front and side Walls of said In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set box and chamber including said common iny `hand at Oakland, California, this 3rd side Wall and defining openings smaller in day of December, 1923.
area than the associated box and chamber,
and top sections removably fitted in said GEORGE HAMMER.
