IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,737, dated June 22, 1875 application filed July 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HILLEGASS, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrauts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear View thereof.

My invention consists in a cup sliding on the key and covering the supply-cock.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the box of a hydrant, having a spout, B, supplycock (3, and key D, for turning on and shutting off the water. The spout B is connected to the upper end of a vertical pipc,E, which is continued laterally or horizontally at F, in which portion the supply-cock0 is fitted, and then vertically at G, the pipe thus forming a double bend or angle, a a. The lower portion of the pipe G is screwed into the upright portion of the ground-pipe H, whose main portion extends horizontally, and has fitted to it the stop-cock J, which is thus located in the box A. To the upper portion of the pipe G there is secured an upwardly-projecting shed, K, or in the same is formed a cavity, K, which is adapted to engage with or be engaged by a key, L, which, owing to theangle a, does not interfere with the cock (3. When the key is not in service it may be hung on the side of the box A 3 but when required for use it is .applied to the stud or cavity K, as shownby the dotted lines, Fig. 1, said key being also adapted to operate the supply-cock similarly to the key D, and the latter may also be applied to the part K in lieu of the key L. M
represents a cup which is secured to the upper end of the upright portion of the ground-pipe H and opens thereinto; and N represents a cup which is fitted on the key D and overhangs the top of the supply-cock G.
Thebox, with its various appurtenances, will be set in the ground and connection made with the water-pipe, as usually.
When the supply-cock O is worn out or leakage occurs, or for any other cause is to be removed, the spout B is unscrewed from the pipe E, the key D removed, and the key L fitted to the stud or cavity K. B y properly rotating said key L, the pipe G will be unscrewed from the ground-pipe H, and with the pipe Gr rotates the supply-cock pipe F and vertical pipe E, so that the pipes E F G and the cock 0 may be simultaneously removed.
It will be noticed that in this operation the ground-pipe H is not disturbed.
To reapply the parts, the same being prop erly connected, the pipe G is directed to the cup M, whose flaring mouth, being upward, guides thebottom of said pipe to the threads of the upright portion or joint of the groundpipe H. By applying the key L to the stud or cavity K, the pipe G will be rotated and connected or screwed to the ground-pipe.-
The spout B is now passed through its opening in the'box A and screwed into the pipe E, and the key D applied to the cock 0, the hydrant being then again in operative condition.
The cup N covers the cock 0, and prevents dirt, dust, &c., reaching the same and injur ing or affecting thejoint thereof.
The stop-cock J is always accessible in the same box that contains the supply-cock G,
and the hydrant is thus complete and con venient in one box, whereby a special box for the stop-cock is avoided, and in case of necessity of removal of the hydrant with all the appurtenances but one digging is required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
