CLINTON H. M. BULL, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO REED ROLLER. BIT COMPANY, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS, A CORPORATION OF TEXAS.
ROLLER BIT.
Application filed August 15, 1927. Serial No. 212,995.
' This invention relates to deep well drilllug apparatus, and more particularly to roller bits for use in rotary boring drills.
Roller bits have heretofore been v used wherein side -roller cutters and cross roller cutters have'been mounted, the former being positioned on the sides of the head in planes converging in the head, and the latter extending diametrically across the head between the former and at right angles thereto.
It is the object of this invention to provide a new and improved means whereby cross roller cutters can be mounted between and in the same transverse plane with side roller cutters. s
The invention has as a further object the provision of a brace between the spindles of roller cutters disposed on opposite sides of a head. Y
Another object of the invention is to provide a head and a spindle having new and improved cooperating elements, whereby a roller cutter can be quickly and easily mounted in and removed from the head.
A further object of the invention the provision of a newand improved sectional roller cutter.
Various objects, other than those above enumerated, will appear from the following description and the accompanying drawngs.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 1s a fragmentary and partly sectional side elevation of the assembled bit; Fig. 2 .is a sectionon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic bottom plan view; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, a two-piece bit head is indicated at 1, the two parts of the head having grooves in the meeting faces thereof adapted when alined to form slush course l". Each of the two pieces of head 1 has the inner side of the lower end thereof beveled as at 2, whereby the two pieces form a head having a substantiall V-shaped recess in the bottom thereof. T e outer sides of the lower ends of said pieces are recessed as shown at 3, and have bores 4; therethrough leadin downwardly and inwardly. Annular anges 5 .formed on said pieces project into the central recess of thehead adjacent bores 4.
Bushings 7 surround flanges 5. g
key 6 This key and slot construction is described and claimed in my application for Letters Patent of the United States filed March 28th, 1927, Serial Number 178,987.
The side roller cutters may be of one-\ piece form as shown at 8, and held on bushlng 7 by spindle 6, the bore of said cutter being "enlarged to receive the enlarged port1on 6 of spindle 6; orelse be made of two sections 9 and 9, similarly held on bushing 7 by spindle 6, the bore of section 9 being llkGWlSB. enlarged to receive enlarged portion 6 of spindle 6. Section 9 has a circumferential recess adjacent its base to receive section 9", as shown. The teeth of section 9 cut the side wall of the hole only. Under ordinary conditions, the teeth of section 9 will become dull sooner than will the teeth of section 9, and when this occurs, a new I section 9 can be used with original section 9 v The lower ends of the parts of a twopiece bit head, and the corresponding depending projections of'one-piece heads, are subjected to great strains, and at times bend inwardly, thereby putting an end to the efficient operation of the roller cutters carried thereby. This invention provides new and improved means to positively prevent suchinward movement. L
Each of the enlarged portions 6 of spindles 6, has a substantially cylindrical recess, and a socket in the lower wall of said recess to receive one end of a pin 10, pin 10 having a plurality of frusto-conical cross roller cutters 11 thereon, said cutters being of various lengths so that trackin thereof will not occur, Pin 10 is locke against rotation in the sockets.
Pin 10 has screwed thereon, adjacent the ends thereof, bearing collars 12, said collars snugly fitting the sockets in the lower walls of recess 6".
To strongly support pin 10, rings are provided either integral therewith, as shown at 10, or separate therefrom as shown at 13. Separate ring 13 is secured against rotation with respect to pin 10 by key 14:. Referring particularly to Figs. 4 and 5, it w1ll be observed that these rings are concentric with the surfaces of recesses 6 to snugly fit the same. A rigid support is thereby provided.
The two innermost and abutting cutters of rollercutters 11, have their meeting faces grooved for the reception of a packing rin 15.
6H ducts '16 may be provided in the head 1 leading to the bearing surfaces of the side roller cutters 8 and 9, and ducts 17 to cross roller cutters 11, as shown. 1
The drawings disclose, and this specificationdescribes, the preferred embodiment of the invention. It is to be understood that the hereinafter appearing claims are not l1m-. ited to the specific form shown, and that various changes may be made without departure from the scope thereof.
Those skilled in the art will at once observe that the invention provides a new and improved arrangement of cutters, and new and improved means to support the cutters so arranged.
I claim:
1. In a rotary boring drill, a head, spindles on said head, cutters on said spindles, and a brace between said spindles and having'its ends mounted thereon.
