SHIPPING BOX FOR CHICKENS.
Application led November 16,l 1926. Serial No. 148,752.
This invention relates to boxes for shipping young chickens.
An object of the invention isthe provision of a box for shipping purposes which s will permit sufc'ient circulation of air in suiricient to prevent the small chickens from escaping from said box.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention isnot coriined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of theinvention as expressed in the y appended claims.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a pair of shipping boxes constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same,
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the bottom plan view of a closure for the boxes, and
Figure 4 is a horizontal section of one of the boxes.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 10 designates a lower box and 11 an upper box. The lower box has an open upper end which is closed by a top or cover 12. The central portion of the cover is removed, as shown at 13, to provide an opening for the circulation of air. Secured to the outer face of the top and at opposlte sides of the opening 13 are a pair of cleats 14 upon which is adapted to rest a bottom 15 of the box 11.
The upper box is also provlded with a cover 16 provided with depending flanges 17 which embrace the upper portion of the side and end walls of the box. The cover of this box is provided with an opening 18. Cleats 19 are located upon opposite sides of the opening and are adapted prevent packages or other boxes being 1a1d 1n close contact with the opening 18 to prevent circulation of the air in the compartments of the box. A sheet of wire netting 20 is stretched across the opening 18 and is secured to the top 16 adjacent the periphery of the opening. This screen permits the eirculation of air but will prevent the chickens from escaping from the box.
As shown. more particularly in Figure 1 each of the tops is provided with a plu rality of openings 21 and 22 to permit greater circulation of air while openings 23 and 24 in the end and side walls respectively of the upper and lower boxes also -provide for the draftZJ of air passing through the sides of the box to the upper regions and either out through the openings 21 or 22 or through lthe opening 18 of the cover 16.
Referring more particularly to Figures 2 and 4 it w1ll be seen that each of the shiplping boxes are divided into a plurality of chambers 26 by means of a longitudinal partition 27 and a transverse partition 28. The partition 27 is provided with flanges 2S) adapted to be secured to the end walls of the box in any approved manner while the transverse walls have flanges 30 adapted to be secured to the side walls of the box and the flanges in each case extend in opposite directions.
The ends 31 of the cleats 14 and 19 project beyond the side walls of the boxes so that they will come in contact with other packages or parcels and aid in spacing the boxes from said parcels so that circulation of air will be insured for the chickens. As shown in Fig. 1 two boxes are placed with the base of one resting on the cleats 14 of a lower box. A cord 32 is then applied around the boxes and tied securely when the boxes are ready for shipment. It will be seen by this construction that the air will be able to circulate through the space between the boxes 10 and 11 by reason of the thickness of the cleats 14. Provision is also made for additional circulation of air by reason of the openings 23 and 24 in the side and end walls of the boxes. Furthermore, as shown in Fig. 1, openings 21 and 22 are provided .in the top to insure sucient circulation of the air to maintain the life of the chickens.
1. A device of the character described comprising a pair o' shipping boxes, with one box ocated in ysuperimposed relation with the other box, said boxes having at the upper end thereof an opening, a removable cover for the open end, each cover being provided With an opening therein, cleats secured toeach cover and having one edge dis posed adjacent an edge of the'opening, the opening in the cover of the superimposed box having a screen extending across thereof and secured -to the inner face of the cover the opening in the lower box being located in protected relation by the bottom of the 20 the upper end thereof an opening, a removable cover for the open end, each cover being provided With an opening therein, cleats secured to each cover and having oneedge disposed Aadjacent an edge of the opening, the opening in the cover of the superimposed box having a screen extending across thereof and secured to the inner face of the cover, the opening in the lower box being located in protected relation by the bottoni of the su perimposed box and spaced from said box by the cleats secured to the cover thereof, the boxes being provided with side Walls having openings therethrough for the circulation of air, each of the boxes being provided With partitions, each partition having flanges at the opposite end thereof with one flange bent at a right angle to the partition and extending in an opposite direction from the fiange of the other end.
