CHOKE COIL.
Application filed October 29, 1924. -Serial No. 746,639.
This inventionrelates tocertain new and useful improvements in choke coils of that type employed in connection withthe han dling of high tension current.
This invention contemplates as one of its objects the provision of an improved choke 0011, the mounting of whlch provides positive protection against damage by the elements and one in which the maximum value of the coil capacity is obtained.
This invention has as another object the provision of an improved choke coil wherein the spires'oi turns of the'coil are oppositely engaged and firmlytsecured by a pair of spacers havingtheir ends secured insuitable supporting "members.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a choke coil of the character described whichmaybe used either as a rigid orstationarytype or as a strain or suspension type.
And a still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a choke coil of the character described in which the coil is held in proper shape at all times by spacers adapted to be secured between end supports of the type for use in connection with either the stationary or suspension types of mountings.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds my invention resides in the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated two complete examples of the physical embodiment of. my invention constructed according to the best modes I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a choke coil of the stationary type embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is an end view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a perspective View of a choke coil of the strain or suspension type embodying my invention.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the, 'several Views; the numeral 5 designates a coil proper which is formed from suitable material of a gauge depending on the type of current with which it is to be utilized. The spires or turns of the coil are clamped between'the complementary members 6 of, one of or more spacers 7, the meeting faces of which are provided with registering grooves or notches 8 spaced a distance equal to that which it is desired to maintain between thespires or turns of the coil. Ifde sired, the members 6 of each spacer may be secured together .with thespires or turns-of the coil confined therebetweenby screws or other securing means 9, although this is not essential except for convenience in assem- .b'ling as the ends of the spacer are secured in end supports 10 in themanner now to be described. I
In that form of my invention illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, each end support comprises two complementary clamping members 11 and 12, having their inner faces recessed or notched adjacent their ends, as at 13, in which the adjacent ends of the spacers are firmly secured between the clamping members by binding bolts or other means 14:. The lower ends of the clamping members are provided withlaterally projecting attaching feet 15 through which screws or bolts 16 pass to mount the same on insulators 17 carried by insulator bracketslS. The insulator brackets 18 are in turn suitably secured to a supporting base 19, thus rigidly mounting the choke coil. 7
In Figure 3, I have illustrated a choke coil of the strain or suspension type in which the end supports 10 have their central portions enlarged, as at 20, to accommodate and receive couplings 21 on the adjacent ends of a suspension shaft or rod 22, the couplings 21 having eyes or other attaching means 22 which pass outwardly of the supports through slots 23 formed between the mem bers 11 and 12. The enlargements 20 have their outer ends closed over, as at 2&, in order to'prevent outward movement of the shaft 22.
In the form of my invention illustrated in V posite ends of like design and construction, the choke coil being suspended from the eyes 22 as will be readily evident.
The number of turns to the coil may be varied depending on the type of Work in which the device is .to be employed, the coil is absolutely protected against shorting of any of the turns thereof due to contact with one another by reason of high wind or being struck by articles blown thereagainst, the coil is strengthened against the destructive force of the elements such as sleet and the like and in general the construction is simplified and a very efficient and economical coil produced.
If desired the lateral projections 15 may be provided With slots 15 (see dotted showing in Figure 2) through which the bolts 16 pass. This allows for incidental adjustment and ease in casting.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An appliance of the character described, comprising a pair of insulated mountings, end supports secured to the mountings and each including a pair of complementary clamping members, a pair of spacing members having their ends detachably secured between the clamping members of each sup port, and a coil having its turns passed through said spacing members.
2. An appliance of the character described,
comprising a pair of complementary end supports each including a pair of clamping members, a pair of spacing members conneoting the end supports and having their ends secured between the members of the end supports, a coil having its" turn passed through said spacer members, a shaft mounted substantially centrally of the coil, enlargements formed centrally in the members of the end supports to provide pockets, couplings on the ends of said shaft and disposed in said enlargements, suspension means on said couplings passed outwardly of said end supports, and means preventing longitudinal movement of said shaft.
3. An appliance of the character described, comprising two pairs of complementary clamping members, the inner surfaces of the ends of the clamping members of each pair being recessed to define clamping pockets, a pair of spacer members having their ends fitted in the clamping pockets of the pairs of clamping members, clamping means for securing the clamping members of each pair together to clamp the ends of the spacer members therebetween, a coil having its turns engaged With the spacer members, and mounting means engageable with the clampinrr members.
