METHOD OF INSERTING- THE BUCKETS IN THE SHAFTS 0F DIRECT HORIZONTAL WATER-WHEELS.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TENisoN OHESHER, of Middleburg in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVater/Vheels; and I hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a vertical section in the line 1 2 and Fig. 2 a horizontal section in the line 3 4.
The letters of reference indicate the same parts in the dierent figures wherever they occur.
I proceed to describe the construction and operation of my improvement. A vertical sha-ft A, has its bearings in the top and bot-A tom pieces of a suitable frame work B, it carries a horizontal water wheel C, consisting of a cylinder a, flange and sliding buckets c, supported on brackets (Z, proceeding from the shaft. Mortises e, and f are made at right angles with each other through the shaft. A, through which, and corresponding mortises in the cylinder a., the buckets c slide with a reciprocating motion. The buckets are halved together by notches g, the vertical sides of which act as stops to limit the action of the buckets in both directions. The bottoms of the mortises e and f' are in the same plane but f is one half longer than e, thus allowing its bucket to be lifted vertically clear of the notch in the other one, so that both can be withdrawn laterally, and be readily replaced or exchanged for new ones.
A curved guide D is secured to the underside of the cover or top piece E; its object and effect is to force the buckets through the cylinder when they come in contact with it. The curve of the guide D is elliptical extending from a point per 16,465, dated January 27, 1857.

A chute F conveys the water to the wheel to which it is confined by a waterway G, formed by a casing H which extends from the chute concentrically with the wheel about one third of its circumference. Oommencing at the mouth of the chute is an enlargement I, of the water way G extending to the point at which the sliding buckets arrive when pushed out to their full extent. The bestpractical form for the horizontal line of this enlargement is an ellipse cut out of the casing, and so formed as to approach the wheel most rapidly at the end most remote from the mouth of the chute. The object of increasing the width of the water way at this point is, that theV pressure may be partially reduced for the purpose of preventing the full force of the Water from acting upon the upper side of the bucket which is in the act of being pushed out by the guide on the opposite side, thereby greatly diminishing the friction which would be excessive without. my improvement.
Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The sliding buckets c, when constructed, and arranged as described and combined with the mortises c and f in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
