The lubrication of manyparts of a modern motor vehicle requires the use of a grease gun in which a soft grease of some kind is used. At the present time this material is usually sold in packages containing certain specified weights, the packages, however, bearing no special relationship to the grease gun in which the grease is intended to be used. Consequently, when the user wishes to load. a grease gun he removes the cap atone end of the gun and ladles the grease out of the can or other container in which ithas been sold and, forces it into the gun as best he may. not only because the hands and the gun become smearedwith grease, but also because the forcing of the grease into the gun pockets a considerable body of air therein which prevents the complete loading of the gun.
The present invention aims to devise a re-fill grease package with the aid of which a greasegun may be loaded quickly, neatly, and completely. It is also an object of the invention to devise a package of this character which can be manufactured very economicallv.
v The nature of the invention will be readily understood from the following description when read in connectlon with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in'the appended claim.
Referring now to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pack age embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a view, partly in cross-section and partly in elevation, showing the manner in which this packageis used in filling a grease gun.
The package shown comprises atubular shell 2, preferably made of sheet metal. and of approximately cylindrical form. Near one end an internal beading 3 is formed, as by rolling, to provide an internal shoulder 4. The opposite ends of this shell are open for the entire diameter of the shell and are normally closed by caps or covers 5 and 6, respectively. This con tainer is filled with grease at the refinery, or any other convenient wholesaling plant, and it is then handled in commerce exactly as are the present grease packages.
Inorder to fill a grease gun such as that shown at 7, Fig. 2, the screw'cap on the gui'i should be removed and the piston 8 taken out of the barrel or cylinder. The caps 5 and 6 of the grease package are then removed from the shell 2 and the upper end of the grease gun is inserted in the shouldered end of the shell until it is stopped by the internal shoulder 4:. The piston 8 is next inserted in the opposite end of the shell and is forced down into the shell far enough to eject the grease therefrom and force it into the gun 7. It will be noted that the shoulder at being inwardly disposed will deflect grease towards the center of the gun which is being filled and thereby prevent to a large extent any leakage at the joint between the lower end of the shell and the gun. By this arrangement the necessity of threaded joints, packing and the like is avoided. It is'preferable to have the discharge tube at the opposite'end of the grease gun disconnected, or at least open, while this operation is being performed to permit air to escape freely from the gun as it is displaced by the grease. As soon as the shell has been emptied, in this manner the piston 8 is; withdrawn from it, the shell is thrown away, and the piston is re-inserted in its proper position in the gun 7, the usual cap being screwed in place. ready for use.
By the use of this package the grease gun thus may be filled quickly, neatly, and com pletely. The nature of the package is such I that its manufacture involves but a trifling expense, while being far more convenient to use than are the customary grease packages.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim as new is:
A refill package-for grease guns comprising a shell of substantially cylindrical form filled with grease and having one end thereof open for substantially its entire diameter, a removable cover closing said end, the opposite end of said shell being slightly larger The, gun then is in internal diameter than the grease gun with which the package is to be usechwherehv the end of the grease gun may slide freely inside the latter end of the shell, a circumferential groove formed in the Wall of said shell near said latter end providing an internal shoulder against which the open end of the grease gun will abut when inserted in the shell, said shoulder serving to deflect the grease inwardly to prevent leakage between the shell and the gun during the filling operation, and a removable cover for closing the shouldered end of said shell.
