BELL-RING MACHINERY.

This invention relates to bell-ring-machinery of the type in which the ringing of a bell is caused by a normal rotary motion.
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide a churchor factory-bell with means by which energy may be communicated from a driving mechanism to a bell, without disturbing the natural oscillatory movement of said bell, and in such an amount as to be substantially equal to the' damping at normal ringing, but in a greater amount in starting and in ceasing to ring the bell.
Another object of my invention is to time or to tune a driving mechanism with a bell, and loosely to couple mechanically said driving mechanism with said bell.
A further object is to produce a mechanical loose coupling device comprising yielding means, the yieldingness of which causes the stroke of the driving parts to differ strongly from the reciprocating movement of the driven bell-sweep at starting and at ceasing, and rather little at normalringing the bell, l y y According to vthe present invent-ion, a. mechanism driven by a rotary prime-mover and producing a. reciprocating movement is substantially tuned to the natural frequency of the bell which is to be rung, and -is loosely coupled with said bell by means of a peculiar mechanical loose coupling device.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, reference is hereinafter made to the accompanying drawing, therfigure of which is a side view with parts in section of a. preferred form of securing my desired result, but I do not mean to limit myself to the exact form shown.
In the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration and description, and referring to the drawing wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, the bell 1 suspended on the beam 2 is swingably mounted, and bears sweeps 8, 3 slotted at 4, 4 or otherwise adjustably carrying the pins 5, 5. y
A mechanism comprising in a casing 6 a pulley 7, toothed wheels 8, 8, 8 and cranks 9, 9 is driven by a prime-mover 10 of a normal rotary motion, such as a little electromotor. A strap 11 may be employed to convey motion from said prime-mover to the pulleys shaft 12. The ratio is determined by the natural period of the bell 1 in a such a way that to each full oscillatory motion of the bell substantially corresponds one a cylindrical casing 16 which is threaded at both ends, caps 17 and 18 respectively are fitted yon the opposite ends of the casing and the cap 18 receives in a stuffing-box` 19 a tubular rod 20 including one end of a hollow piston-rod21. The opposite end of the rod,21 is threaded into an aperture 22 for engaging the pin 5'.
l The piston-rod 21, on which a piston 23 1s secured, is perforated and immersed in a fluid 24 of a low freezing point, such as glycerine, with which the cylindricalcasing 16 is filled. The tubular rod 20 is provided with a regulating disk 25 by which, when turning the tubular rod, a number of holes of the piston 28 can be closed, the remaining holes are provided with ball-valves 26 open-. ing only when the piston is depressed. The central passage of the piston forms the entrance to the interior of the hollow pistonrod 21, bounded in the top by a plug 27 and serving as an air-chamber 28. Anotherv airchamber 29 is arranged above the piston in the top of the cylindrical casing 16 in which a tube 30, threaded into the cap 18, forms a chamber of ring-shaped cross-section. Between these two air-chambers the fluid-column 24 in the cylindrical casing 16 is encased.
The two hollow rods 20'and 21 extending v through the tube 30 and cap 18 bear adjusting- rings 31 and 32, by which, the turning of the tubular rod 20 on the piston-rod 21, can be effected and the regulating disk 25 can be turned and in this way a number of holes of the piston can be closed or opened withoutopening the coupling device. By regulating n fers from the form illustrated in the draw ing, in that the bell is caused to swing by one coupling device only and only one crank in the driving mechanism is provided.
Claims:
l. The combination with an oscillating bell and a sweep therefor, of mechanism operatingsubstantially-in tune with the natu ral oscillation frequency of the bell, and means between said mechanism and they bell sweep to vary' the power between said mechanism and sweep Vwhen the oscillations of the bell deviate from their natural period.
2. The combination with an oscillating bell and a sweep therefor, ofmechanism operating substantially in tune with the natural oscillation frequency of the bell, Yand automatically yielding means between said mechanism and the bell sweep to vary the power between said mechanism and sweep when the oscillations of the bell deviate from their natural period.
` 3. The combination with an oscillating bell and a sweeptherefor; of mechanism op* eratingsubstantially in tune with the natural oscillation frequency of the bell, and a device between said mechanism and the sweep to vary the power between said `mechani'sm and sweep when the oscillations of the bell deviate from their natural period, comprising a liquid containing-cylinder,`a piston therein, a hollow piston rod therefor, ports and valves controllingvthe passage ot' liquid to opposite sides of the piston, said cylinder containing a body of air above the liquid therein and said hollow piston rod containing a body of air, whereby the liquid above the piston is virtually acted upon both fbove and belowA by the pressure of said air bodies.
