IMPROVEMENT IN SCRAPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,532, dated J une 15, 1875; application filed May 1, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELBRI'DGE DICKINSON, of Marshall, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dirt-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a top View of my improved scraper, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, part being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a part of the rear board, showing the catch-bar.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved scraper for grading roads and other purposes, which shall be so constructed as to take up the dirt Without its being pre-- viously plowed or loosened, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.

The invention consists in the scraper-plate and its upper and lower supporting-bars, in combination with the bottom of the body or box of the scraper, and in the combination of the parallel inclined bars, the cross-bars,

and the hinge-bolt with the scraper-plate and its supporting-bars, and the bottom of the body or box of the scraper, as hereinafter fully described.

A is the body or box of the scraper, which is made with a slightly-concaved bottom, an open front, and vertical back and sides, the forward ends of the said sides being made with an abrupt curve, as shown in Fig. 2. To the middle part of the sides of the body or box A, toward their forward ends, are pivoted the forward ends of two levers, B, the rear ends of which, at the back of the body or box A, are connected by a cross-bar, b To the levers B, at about the middle part of the box or body A, are pivoted the wheels 0, the outer ends of the journals of which are supported by straps b the ends of which are secured to said levers in front and rear of said wheels. D is the scraper-plate, which is slightly concaved, and its ends are turned up slightly to act as cutters. To the lower side of the end parts of the scraperplate D are bolted or welded two pairs of bars, d 01 The upper bar d passes up, and

is bent back to extend along the upper side of the bottom of the box A, and is bolted to said bottom. The lower bar d of each pair extends back, is bent upward and rearward, and is secured to the bottom of the box A by the same bolt that secures the rear end of the corresponding upper bar d F are a number of steel bars, placed parallel with each other and a little distance apart, and which are bolted or riveted toward their lower or forward ends to an iron bar, G, that crosses them at right angles, and the ends of which are bent downward, and are beveled off to rest upon the bottom of the box A, and support the device at the proper inclination. Upon the lower ends of the side bars F, or all of said bars F, are formed, or to them are attached, lugs, through which, and through lugs formed upon or attached to the upper bars d, is passed a long bolt, H, to hinge the said device to the said bars at. The device F G is intended for the dirt to slide up upon in loading the scraper, and it is hinged to allow it to be turned down, to facilitate the operation of unloading. To the middle part of the cross-bar b of the levers B is pivoted a lever, E, the forward end of which catches in the notches in a catch-bar, 0, attached to the back board of the body or box A, so that the inclination or pitch of the said body or box may be regulated as desired. The levers E also serve as a handle.

Having thus described" my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The scraper-plate D and its upper and lower supporting-bars 01 (1 in combination with the bottom of the body or box A of the scraper, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination of the parallel inclined bars F, the cross-bar G, and the hinge-bolt H with the scraper-plate D, the supporting-bars d d and the bottom of the body or box A, substantially as herein shown and described.
