My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as grease or oil guns or the like, which are employed for the dispensing of grease, oil or the like to a desired point. The gun herein described is particularly adapted for the dispensing under pressure of grease, lubricating oil, etc., or kerosene, gasoline, or other materials, and is constructed to contain a substantial 'and plentiful supply of the material and discharge the same under a considerable pressure as desired.
The invention has among its objects the production of a. device ot the kind described that is simple, compact, durable, eflicient, satisfactory, and of considerable power, for use wherever found applicable. The saine is particularly designed for use in garages, shops or the like, for purposes of lubricatiig bearings or other moving parts, or for discharging or forcing a. cleaning fluid, for example gasoline, kerosene or the like, through a hearing or wherever desired. It is designed to provide a considerable supr ply so that the gun need be illed only at comparatively long iiitcrvalsand is so constructed that considerable pressure may be secured with but very little exertion on the part of the operator. It has also among its objects the production of an improved coupling to be used with the gun or Where found applicable.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings in which several o t the preferred embodiments of my 'l5 invention are shown, I have illustrated in Figs. 1,12 and 3 a simple type inwhich 1 represents a tubular casing ot' the desired size which is provided with a bottomor base 2, the parts being secured together in any suitable manner. As shown, 3 represents an in- View in elevation 'of a portion ternal flange on the base which may be of a size to closely lit the inner Wall of the shell. '.Iheshell 1 may be secured thereon by shrinking in place or by welding or any other suitable means.
In Fig. 2, I have illustrated how an, external ange 4 may be provided and the shell 1 secured 1n place between the flanges 3 and 4;- by the screws 5. At the opposite end of the shell 1, I provide an end closure 7, which may be secured in place iii any suitable manner, as for example by Hanging the same over and securing by means of bolts or screws 8 or equivalent means for the purpose. I t may be mentioned, at this end of the device I prefer to either ream, or, as shown, to swage the end of the shell, as indicated at 9, so that the internal diameter is slightly `increased at this end. This permits the easy applying of the piston or plunger, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.
The shell and end closures may of course be of such size as to give the desired capacity, but in the larger sizes particularly, I prefer to provide castors or the like so that the gun may be easily handled. For the ltion 34 on the worm shaft.
purpose, I have shown the castors 10 and 11 on the base, the same being arranged on the base and secured by brackets 12 or the Tequivalent. I have also shown a castor 13 arranged adjacent the top so that the gun'may be laid upon its side and supported in such manner that it may be easily supported. Obviously, any style and an number of castors may be employed for t e purpose.
Projected through the top closure to the interior of the gun is a plunger rod 15, which is provided with a piston or plunger of the desired type. My preferred type of plunger consists of the desired number vof plates 16 and 17 provided with a ring 18 or the equivalent of suitable packing material, the parts being so arranged and formed that when the plates are forcedA together, the packing ring will tend to expand..l
Ihave shown thenuts 19 and 20 arranged on the rod 15 and adapted to control the relative adjustments of the two plates. Lock nuts or the like may be added if desired. Arranged on the top plate 7 is a housing member 22 which may be secured in place by the stud bolts 23 or any equivalent for the purpose.- Arranged within the housing is a worm wheel 24, which I have illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 as provided with a separable part 25. It may be mentioned that part v25 may be rotated or turned relative the worm wheel 24, thereby substantially uneoupling the worm wheel from the rod 15 for purposes of raising the plunger relative to the topas will be hereinafter described. A pin 26 on member 25 may be employed for turning 25 relative to 24. As shown, the rod 15 is threaded, the member 25 being in threadedv engagement therewith so that as member 25, as will be hereinafter explained, is turned relative to the shaft, the shaft will be raised or lowered. The shaft is prevented from rotating by means of the key 28 engaging in the key slot 27, or in such other manner as may be desired. f The worm wheel 24 is provided with teet 29 in mesh with the worm 30 carried by the head or housing 22. As shown (see Fig. 3), worm 30 is provided with a projecting end 31, preferably spherical, which is suitably supported. in a bushing or the like, the opposite end 32 projecting to the-exterior of .the housing. I have shown a bushing 33 arranged in the housing which forms a thrust bearing cooperating with the por- The shaft is operated by means of a crank 35 provided with a suitable hand grip 36.. It may be mentioned that the crank arm 35 is adjustably secured on the shaft, same being provided with a slot 38 through which the end ofV 32 extends, .the parts being maintained 1n operative relation by means of a nut `37 ory the equivalent. Obviously, adjusting the position of the crank arm on 32 will vary the leverage and the force or power required to operate the device. I have shown the gun provided with a discharge port at the baser plate 2, the same beingarranged to discharge through a fitting 39 into and through a conduit 40 which is preferably flexible.
In using this type of gun, assuming that the plunger is at the top of its stroke and there is grease, oil or any other liquid fluid or semi-fluid material between the plunger and the base ,2, the crank is turned in a direction to cause a feeding of the materiaL As the same is turned, it will through the worm 30 drive the worm wheel 24 and through the member 25 carried thereby. The rod 15 being prevented from rotating, the rod will move toward the end 2 causing the plunger to move and expel the contents through the conduit 40. When the gun has been emptied, or it is desired to replenish the material therein, the crank may be turned in the reverse direction to raise the rod and plunger, or in the construction shown, member 25 may be screwed out of 24 and thence the plunger rod and plunger raised, after which vthe top may be removed. If desired, the
pitch of the worm may be such that rotation of the worm wheel will not only raise the plunger rod but will drive the worm without releasing, that is, part 25 would not be neces'- sary. In this case, the worm wheel 24may be provided with a handle indicated by 41 in dotted lines. Obviously, the. gun may stand up as indicated in Fig. 2 or be laid down on its side, and the same may be of any desired capacity.
Obviously, reaming or swaging the end of the wall of the part 1, as indicated at 9 in Fig. 2, facilitates the replacing of the plunger in the gun after the same has been .removed for filling. .It may be mentioned member 47 which may be "turned, carrying the worm out o'f engagement with the'worm l wheel. In this construction, operation of the worm wheel, as previously described by means of ahandle similar to 41, would permit the quick raising of the plunger rod` without driving through by means of the worm. I have previously mentionedjhow ythe wall 1 might be provided with a filling opening, and I have illustrated in Figsp and 6 types of openings. Referring to Fig.
5, 48 represents the wall which is provided with an opening normally covered by a cover plate 49 which may be secured in place by means of bolts 50 or the equivalent In this case, I prefer to provide packing 51 of the desired size, shape and material. This particular type is suitable Where the Wall of the gun is of considerable thickness or of cast material. Ihave illustrated in Figs. 6. 7 and 8 a modified construction suitable for other types Where it is not desired to use the bolts. Referring to Fig. 7, I have shown What may be termed a double endedgun, that is, it is adapted to discharge the contents of the gun when the plunger is moving in either direction. In this case, the same is provided with a plurality of discharge conduits and With a side opening lso that it is not necessary to remove either head. As shown, 54

. however, the heads are secured on the shell by means of rods 57, 58 being nuts or heads at the ends of the rods.
Referring to'Fig. 6, the side Wall is provided With an opening which is normally covered by a closure 58, 59 being packing material of suitable size, shape and material. In this case, 62 represents a bolt or stud carried by the cover 58 which extends through a member 61, preferably but not necessarily of spring metal and which engages With the rods 57 60 is a nut arranged on thel stud 62. The bolt as shown in preferably constructed so as not to turn. Obviously by easing up on the nut to release the pressure, member 61 may be turned, thereby disengaging the rods 57 and ermitting the removal of the cover. enerally, I prefer to use two of the fastening means as most clearly indicated in Fig. 8.
This particular gun is shown -equipped with the Worm Wheel housing 78 enclosing the Worm 7 0 and forming a bearing for the Worin 71 Which is operated by the crank 72 similar to the construction previously vdescribed. As most clearly shown in Fig. 9, the Worm is supported by the bushing 75 and the bushing 76, butin this particular construction Where the gun is'double acting, I prefer to employ packing material 77 so that there Will be no leakage of material at this point. I have illustrated in Fig. 9 how a gauge 78 may be provided, a simple construction consisting of the shell 78 pivotally supported at 79 and formed with teeth arranged to engage With the teeth 80 on the shaft 74. Obviously, as the shaft is driven, the gauge Will indicate the limits of movement and quantity used or the amount remaining in the gun. This is dev-.sirable because in a double acting gun of be charged. In some instances it might be desirable to put grease at one end and a heavy oil in the other, or to arrange such other combinations of materials as might be found desirable. In that case, the discharge through either outlet 66 or 67 might be as desired.
The discharge conduit from the gun may be connected to the part to be lubricated or cleaned in any suitable manner.l I have illustrated in Fig. 10 a coupling construction in Which 87 represents the conduit or hose connection upon which is swiveled a' coupling member 88 adapted to cooperate with a coupling connection or fitting 89 Which is connected With the part to be lubricated, as for example through a pipe 90.01 any equivalent. .As shown, coupling 88 is constructed to fit the end of the fitting 89,
91 being packing which is preferably provided arranged to abut the end of the ttin'g. Arranged on the part 88 is a collar 92 or the equivalent, provided With a plurality of arms 93 constructed as ,at 94 to engage over the end or shoulder 95 of the fitting. A locking member 96 is preferably arranged on the arms. In making connection With the fitting, the member 96l is moved back as indicated in the dotted lines, and the arms 93 thereupon spring out as shown in dotted lines.` The coupling is slipped over or onl the fitting, and thence member 96 moved up as shown in Fig. 10, so that the arms engage With the fitting. Coupling 88 is then moved, for example, by means of the lugs 97, the same thereby moving toward the end of the fitting and engaging therewith so as to prevent leak'age when the lubricant or the like is forced into the bearing under pressure. To release the same, coupling 88 is partially unscrewed and the member 96 moved back so that the coupling ldise-ngages from the fitting. It Will be noted that the coupling is applied to the. fitting Withoutany great amount of pressure, and may be turned down tightly, giving a secure, tight tit, also Without any difficulty or inconvenience.
I have shoivn in Fig. 12 a vvell-knovvnl type of fitting 98, which generally is provided with a portion for the engagementv of a Wrench, and provides a shoulder- 99, this particular fitting is shovvn With avbayonet joint pin 100. It will be noted. that my coupling is adapted to engage this type of fitting in the same manner as the type shown in Fig. 10. Ordinarily, however, the coupling shown in F ig. 10 would be arranged to iit the cnd of 98, the parts shown on the drawings not being in their relative proportions.
I have alsoillustrated in Fig. 12 a cap 101 arranged to be mounted on the itting, same having bayonet joint slot 102. This figure illustrates'the novel construction for securing lthe cap to the fitting and preventing its loss. As shown, a band 103 is arranged around the cap cured at 104 to the -fitting. Caps of this type have been used heretofore, but I do not un derstand that the same have ever been adapt-l edto the iitting.- V
I particularly mention my improved gun as being adapted for the dispensing of lubricants suchas oil, grease, or the like, but it should be borne in mind' that the same is adapted for any use where it may be found applicable, in connection with the lubrica- `tion of bearings, or in other places. It may be used for dispensing a cleansing fluid un der pressure, as forV example gasoline, kerosene, or the like. In fact, a bearing may be thoroughly cleaned with gasoline and then lubricated. Same is yadapted for use in garages, machine shops, and such other places ai maybe desired, and it may be made in such size as may be found suitable for the purpoge for which it is intended.
Obviously, the double action gun may be provided with one or more side fillers, and the single acting gun shown in Fig. 1 may, if desired, be provided with the iiller opening at the side so as to'avoid the removing ofy the top end closure to fill. With the type of gunshown in Fig. l, however, it is not diiicult to iill from the end as the top may be removed by 'unscrewing the bolts 8, after which the top plunger rod and plunger may be removed, the same being easily `re-applied after filling. It will benoted that by swaging or by reaming the shell at the interior, as
. indicated at 9, the plunger may be very easily seated in place. In some cases, it is possible to reiill the gun without removing the top or without removing the filler opening cover by placing the end of the hose connection in the material and thence retrieving the plunger, the suction drawing the mate-v rial into the gun.
