Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. WRIGHT GARDNER, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
a IMPROVEMENTIN IRONING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,441, dated June 15, 1875; application filed May 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. WRIGHT GARDNER, of Troy, Rensselaer county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Ironing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to machines for ironing collars and other special articles by power with a cylindrical iron, which is made to roll or slide onto the goods and then slide back; and it consists of the carriage for the roll or other contrivance by which it is connected to the working mechanism made to slide on ways parallel to the table, the object being to dispense with the overhead contrivance heretofore employed for suspending the roller-frame or carriage over the table, and thus make a more simple and compact arrangement.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved ironing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the ironing-table; B, the rolling and reciprocating iron; 0, the carrier for the iron; D, the rod connecting it to the driving-shaft E; and F, the ways in which the carriage slides. These slides are in this example arplace-for example, higher or lower on the sides ofthe tableit being only essential that they shall properly support and guide the carrier. The coiled springs G are employed in this case for the pressing of the roller down, and the table-top is arranged on an elastic bed, H, of rubber; but the springs may be arranged in any approved way. K is the ratchet, and L the pawl, by which the roller is prevented from turning when sliding over the goods.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The carrier 0 of a reciprocating iron, B, mounted on ways F, substantially as specified.
J. WRIGHT GARDNER.
