UNITED STATES CHARLES I. SCHRINER, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BUSHING FOR METAL RECEPTACLES.
Application filed October 28, 1925. Serial No. 65,360.
This invention relates to bushings for metallic receptacles, and has for its main object to provide a bushing for ready and quick attachment to the opening of a metal barrel or the like.in such manner that the bushing will be held securely in position against rotation when screwing a bung into or out of said bushing.
Another object of the invention isto pro vide a bushing of the above character which will not leak.
With theabove and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter fully described as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the distinctive features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, similar characters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts. r
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, of a bushing applied to the end of a metal receptacle in accordance with my .invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevatlon of the end of a metallic receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention, for the ap lication thereto of the bushing, which sectlon is taken on line 22 of Fi 3,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a bushing constructed in accordance with my invention, and before being applied to the end of the metallic receptacle,
Fig; 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4 and Fig. 6 is a similar view to ri 1 of amodification of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the end -of a sheet metal barrel or other receptacle, which is provided with an opening 2 formed by pressing therefrom an inward -annular flange 3. Stamped outwardly from the end of the barrel-and on the arc of a circle a sufiicient distance outside of theopening 2 to leave a seat 4 for a sealing gasket 5, are a plurality of projections 6. A bushing 7 of cylindrlca-l-formation having an outside diameter corresponding to the inside diameter of the annular flange 3 for fitting therein and an internally threaded o enin 8 for receiving-a bung, is provided W ith a flange 9 having recesses 10 extendin from the underside thereof for receiving an fitting over the projections 6 of the end of the barrel. The inner end of the bushing 7 r is cut at 11 so as to leave a taperin portion for bending over the inner edge 0% the annular flange 3 as shown at 12. When the recesses 10 of the flange of the bushing are placed over the projection 6 of the end of the barrel, with a gasket 5 between said end of the barrel and the flange of the bushing, an'dthe inner end of the bushing is bent over the inner edge of the annular flange 3, the bushing is securely fixed in the opening of the end of the barrel and will not be moved or rotated by the action of screwing a bun into thebushing or out of the bushing, an the joint between the bushing and the end of the barrel .will be fluid tight.
In Fig. 6 is illustrated a modification of the construction described, in that instead of the recesses 10in the flange 9, openings 13,
.extending entirely through the flange 14 of the bushing 15, are provided, which permit .the making of the flange 14 of less thickness than the flange 9.
From the drawin and description, it will be seen that such a hhshing for metallic barrels or other receptacles is of simple and inexpensive construction, and the'same will be held securely in position, and there will beno leakage between the end wall of'the barrel and the bushing.
Havin fully described my invention what I claim i5: The combination with the wall of a-metallic receptacle of a bushing, the wall hav- "-ing an opening formed therein and surrounded byan annular flange, projections formed integrally with and extending from said wall in the opposite direction from. said flange, the projections being arranged on the arc of a circle in spaced relation to said opening, the bushin extending through said opening and be on the end of the annular flange, the bus inghavinga flange at one end, the flange having recesses extending from the under side thereof and arranged between the bushin and the edge of the flange for receiving an fittin over said projections, a gasket arranged. tween the wal the receptacle within the circle formed v by said projections and said'flange of the bushing, and they other end of the bushing being bent over the end of said annular flange to clamp the bushing in position, substantially .as described.
In testimon whereof I aifix my signature' I HARLES F. SCHRINER. v
