BUILDING STRUCTURE.
Application filed January 16, 1923. Serial No. 612,979.
This invention relates to building structures and is particularly directed to a watertight joint.
Objects of this invention are to provide a joint for metallic paneling, especially for roong or for building structures, which joins vsuccessive panels in a water-tight manner, which acts as a` reinforce, and which avoids the use of nails or other similar fasteners'.
Further objects are to provide a joint for metal panel which will conduct away any water that might b any chance get into the seam acting', in this respect, like a gutter; which, although adapted for4 any type of metal paneling, is particularly adapted for rooting and for use where a slight motion between parts is required as in car roofing Where slight twisting or` distorting movements occur; and to provide a joint which may be easily formed.
Further objects are to provide a metal panel roof which is adequately reinforced throughout its extent, which is secured at 25 both ends of each of the panels, and which may be rapidly and easily assembled.
Embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, in whichj-e Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a building embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a detail of the ridge pole and the associated portions of the roofing.
Figure 3 is a detail of the lower end or edge of the rooting.
'Figure t is ,a transverse sectional view thru one of the tubular connecting members and the associated portions of the paneling.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure l showing a different form of tubular connectin member. v
Although this invention is applicable to various types of building structures and rooting, it has been shown as 'applied to a garage or similar building, as illustrated in Figure 1, and referring more particularly to said figure it will be seen that the roohng is composed of a plurality of sheet metal panels 1 joined by means of tubular members 9. The walls are similarly formed of a plural- 50 ity of sheet metal panels 3 joined by tubular members t. The upper portion or ridge of the roof is provided with an angle-iron ridge pole 5, upon which the panels 1 rest. It s to be noted that the upper ends of the panels overlap the upper edge of the ridge pole, as indicated at 6. y
The side panels and the rooting panels are f necting member 9 has interiorly arranged lips 10 which converge and are fitted between the lips 8 and the marginal portions 7. In this manner a water tight and reinforced joint is formed between the panels .71. lVater which may, for any reason, get into into the tubular member will flow downwardly therethru, as the upturned lips 10 form, inv effect, a double gutter, or a gutter on each side of the space between adjacent panels. The interior of the gutter is smooth and unobstructed.
A further form of tubular connecting member is illustrated in Figure 5. This member is provided with upwardly convergiinir walls 11 and with inwardly directed portions 12 which terminate in angularly arranged lips 13, the member being in effect triangular in cross section. The panels 1 in this .case are provided with juxtaposed marginal portions 14 equipped with inturiied lips 15, receiving between them, the lips 13.
In order to securely hold the roofing in position, a clamp consisting of a casting 16 is provided for each pair of opposed tubular members 9, as may be seen from Figure 2. This clamp has arms 17 which are located within the tubular members and are adapted to clamp such membersl and the adjacent portionsI of the paneling 1 against the angleiron 5. A bolt 18 equipped with a nut 19 and a bearing plate 2() is used to cause the l clamp to bind the members in position, as will be readily understood.
The side panels 3 are joined by tubular members l which may be identical in formation and operation to the tubularmembers 9. These side panels are extended outwardly beneath the eaves of the roof, as indicated at 21, and are provided with inturned lips 22. The lower end of the tubular members ceived between the lips 22 and the adjacent portion 2l of the side vmembers 3Q Any suitable form of ridge cap, as indicated at 26, may be employed, and maybe suitably apertured to receive the tubes 9, as
indicated in Figures il' and 2.
VIt is to be noted th atthe paneling and the connecting tubular members are imperliorate and do not require 'fasteners of any hind' to retain them'i'n position.' it is also to be noted that the tubular members, the outer 'end retaining means, and the paneling are alll formed from vsheet 'metal lThe angle-iron ridge pole 5 gives a ,material degree of 'stiiiness'and rigidity to the vroof andthe tubular n'ienibers vastl increase tlie'stiine'ss and strengtlrof the'roo'f, thus servingboth as interlockii'ig connectors and as rein-forces.A
Ii'fdesired, the tubular members may be made oi" heavier stock than the paneling, as showvn inV Figure 4i. The stiffness and. strength' oi the tubular members is thus materially increased and they may more v'readily serve as the sole supporting means for 'the roofing between the ridge pole and the eaves.
' Thisvl type of roof is adapted to Widely when used as ay rooting for oar`s`,".the slightv Ytwisting motion or relative movements oocurringin different portions Off the RQO are Y easilycared for' by'this construction Without subjecting any portions of it to destructive strains. v Y
Although the invention has been described in considerable vdetail in the specific case illustrated` it is to be. understood that the in vention is not to bel-imited except-'as dehned inthe appended claim. f
,I claim:
A metallic building structure Comprising a tubular connecting-member havinglongitudinal `inclined reentant lips lorming a double gutter, Vand a plurality of V panels having their .marginal portions bent-,to -engage both faces of said lips ltolae retained in position thereby While permittingslight longitudinal*movement between said panels and said connecting'member, said connecting member being ot' heavier "materialtlian-said panels and'being of suieientbeam strength to serve as the sole supporting means-for said panels. I In testimony that I claim the foregoing have hereunto set Ymy'glrand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of consin.
