IMPROVEMENT IN TOY WAGONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,390, dated J une 15, 1875 application filed April 10, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. POR- TER, of Springfield, in the State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification and description.

Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a toy wagon made according to my invention; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the pieces forming the body or box, showing its construction.

My invention relates to toy wagons used by children, and has for its object the construction of such toys in a very expeditious manner, whereby the wagon has a much more stylish appearance, and whereby much labor is saved in its manufacture; and my invention consists of a toy wagon having a rectangular-shaped body, the sides and ends being formed from a strip grooved on opposite sides, one groove being narrow near the lower edge to receive the edge of the piece forming the bottom, and the other a wide one on the outside, to form an ornamental panel on two opposite sides of the body when all the side pieces are secured together, as hereinafter described.

The reach has an auxiliary piece secured between it and the body to raise the body from the axles.

.In the drawings, 0 represents a stripfrom which are formed the sides and ends of the body, and these strips, before being out into the required lengths for the sides and ends, are run through a grooving-machine to form the groove 12 in one side, leaving the projections a and c, and forming the grooved on the other side. The strip is then cut into pieces of the required length for the sides and ends of the body. The side pieces are then nailed to the outer ends of the end pieces, with the edges of the bottom piece a in the groove '5 in all the side pieces, and when that is done the squared ends e of the side pieces form the border of the panel f, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. When the body is formed, and while on the block or mold upon which the body is put together, the piece h is put in place with the reach B outside, and both then nailed to the bottom, and the axles are then nailed to the reach B.

By this construction I am able to manufacture the toys very cheaply and rapidly, the work being done upon a mold, and the material all prepared as above described. The work may all be done by any one not even a mechanic and the sides and ends being out from a previously-prepared strip, a stylish appearance is given to the body of the toy, the ends having the appearance of being paneled.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, in a toy wagon, of the four side and end pieces, made from a strip provided with the grooves 11 and vi, the bottom piece a, the intermediate piece h, and the reach B, all constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
