WINDOW ADJUSTMENT.

This invention relates to improvements in window constructions.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved window construction, embodying a relatively simple type of movable stop bead construction which will permit of the facile detachment I of the window sashes from the frame.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved adjustable stop and parting bead or strip construction for window constructions, embodying a novel movable assemblage in its relation to a window casing, to permit the easy detachment of the sash or sashes thereof.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved retaining strip construction for windows including a movable retaining strip portion having both stop bead and parting bead portions formed thereon, and for novel movable assemblage with the pulley box or stile of the window casing.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved window construction embodying an adjustable strip for the window casing or frame, preferably detachable with respect to a. window casing to permit of the detachment and removal of sashes, and which embodies arelatively compact and durable construction which may be very securely attached to the window casing, and which may be easily detached therefrom.
Other objects and advantages of. this invention willbe apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

Figure 1 is an inside view of a window construction, showing the sashes thereof closed, with certain novel retaining strip features to hold the sashes in place, and which retaining strip features are movable to permit the easy detachment ofthe sashes from the window construction.
' Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken thru the window construction, showing certain novel details;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the retaining strip structure of the window construction,; showing the novel movable feature thereof for permitting the sashes to be swung into easily accessible and removable position.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a novel type of retaining strip embodying both parting bead and stop bead in a definite and integral relation. Figure is a movable portion of a retainmg strip construction for the window, embodying the principle of the retaining strip illustrated in Figure 1, but differing therefrom in that it is adaptable for use upon present window constructions, and includes means for connecting a conventional parting strip and stop bead in a definite and novel relation.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken thru the retaining strip as illustrated in Figure 4., showing its association upon a weight box or stile of a window construction, with a sash assembled therein.
Figure 7 is a cross sectional view similar to the section illustrated in Figure 6, but one which utilizes the retaining strip construction as shown in Figure 5.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration are shown preferred and modified forms of the invention, the letter A may generally designate the window construction, which may comprise a casing '13 within which upper and lower sashes C and D are slidably mounted, and retained therein by means of novel retaining strip constructions F and G at the side stiles of the casing B.
. The principle of this invention, by means of which sashes maybe opened for accessibility or removal may be applied to any form of window construction, such as the casement type, multiple sash type, or other window construction.
As illustrated in the drawings, the casing B may comprise the base sill 10, upon which the inside stool 11 rests. The weight boxes or casings each preferably includes a pulley stile 12; the inner and outer linings 1S and 1 1 respectively; and the back lining 15, all connected in such relation as to provide the weight compartment 16, within which the sash weight-s reciprocate; the linings and stile being connected in asuitable relation and attached to the sill and stool as desired. The window casing at the top thereof includes the head casing construction 18 of any approved construction suitable for supporting the retaining strips in conventional relaion.
The sashes C and D are of the conventional construction, each including the frame supporting therein the transparent or translucent panes 21. The sashes C and D along the sides of the frames thereolare preferably detachably connected and supported by means of flexible pulley cables 25, which are trained over suitable pulleys 26 in upper openings in the pulley stile 12 in accordance with conventional construction; the inner ends of the cables supporting weights which depend in the weight box compartment 16. The pulley stiles 12 in the lower portion thereof are provided with openings 28 as means of access to the coinpartments 16; the weights during an elevated position of the sashes being located adjacent the openings 18, in order to attach said weights. Normally the opening 28 is entirely closed by means of the removable portions H of the sash retaining strip constructions F and G, as will be subsequently described.
Referring to the retaining means for holding :the sashesin place, the head casing 18 may be formed with a conventional bead or.
strip construction, and the conventional outer side stop beads or strips 30 may be connected along the side pulley stiles of the weight boxes, and form the means to re tain the upper sash in sliding position against removal from the outside o-f-thc window construction.
The retaining means F and G along each of the weight boxes includes the upper construction K formed rigid and fixed with the weight box and pulley stile, and the lower movable portion H.
In so tar as the upper fixed construction K at each side of the window casingis concerned, the same preferably includes a parting bead or strip 40, and an inner stop bead or strip 41, the same being connected in a spaced relation to provide a channel 42 along which 'the lower sash slides when the same is elevated. The parting strip or bead l0 of course spaced with respect to the outer stop or bead 30, in order to provide a channel for accommodation of the sliding sash C. the preferred construction the parting strip 10 and the stop bead or strip 41 are connected rigid by means of av backing piece 45 which is attached to the pulley stile.
The movable sash retainer .H which forms the lower portion for each of the side retaining constructions of the window sashes, is formed. to be movable away from the pulley stile orweight box, in order to permit removal of the sashes G andJD, and each the lower movable retaining portions I-I'includes a portion of the: stop bead and a portion of the parting bead, rigidly "'52which"is'sp'aced from thebead 51 to provide a channel or groove 53 within which the frame of the lower sash D operates. In thisconstruction it is to be noted that the retaining strip H is of one piece formation, all of the parts being integrally connected or formed of wood or metal, or other material. At the lower end of the retaining strip H the parting bead 51 is stopped below the lower edge of the stop head 52, in order that the same may respectively rest upon the offset top surfaces of the sill 10 and stool 11. Depending below and fixed in the parting bead 51 and the stop head 52 are retaining shanks '55 and 56 respectively, which are adapted to be detachabl-y received in suitable socket openings provided inward ly of the top surfaces of the sill lO'and stool 11 in order that the lower ends of each retaining construction H may be anchoredto the sill structure of the window casing.
At the lower end of the fixed retaining strip construction K and at the top of the movable retaining strip construction H, the abutting edges of the same are somewhat novelly formed to permit the movement of the movable retainer H away from the window casing, inwardly of the room, at right angles to the plane of sashes; the abutting edges of the fixed and movable retaining constructions K and H being beveled to pre vent movement of the movable retaining strip construction H inwardly of the open ingot the window casing, in the plane parallel with the sashes. To this end, as is illustrated in Figure 1 lower edge of the fixed retainer K and the upper edge of the movable retainer H bevel at an inclination to the vertical, sloping downwardlyfrom the outer surface of the pulley stile 12 in the direction of the win dow casing opening, as illustrated at 58 in Figure 1 of the drawings. The abutting edges of the fixed and movable retainers K and H bevel at'an inclination tothe horizontal from the outer edges thereof upwardly towards the inner edges thereof, in order to permit the swinging movement of the movable retainer Hanwardly, into the room or building, and to prevent the swinging move ment of the same in the opposite direction towards the outside of the window. In this position of parts it is to be noted that the upper end of the movable retainer H is anchored by the beveled construction of the abutting edges of the same and the fixed retainer K, to prevent the movement of the movable retainer H in any direction except at right angles to the plane of the sash inwardly towards the room. The lower end of the movable retainer K is anchored by the retaining shanks 55 and 56 against move ment until the upper end of the retainer H isswung into the room and the shanks lifted out of place from their sockets in the casing sill and stool.
In order to prevent the inward swinging or falling of the movable sash retainer H, it is preferred to provide some special catch means, and to this end a catch or detent 65 is provided, which includes a portion 67 countersunk in fixed relation from the outer surface of the stop bead 52, with an upper portion 68 hinged at 69 to swing outwardly away from the stop head. The upper portion or leaf 68 of the detent 65 carries'an arcuate retaining shank 70 preferably struck on a radius with the hinged axis69 as a center, and this retaining shank 70 is adapted to enter an opening 71 formed transversely thru the retainer H, and as it is greater in length than the thickness of the retainer H, at its free end it is adapted to enter a socket 72 formed in the weight box or pulley stile, which receives the same and prevents the movementof the retainer H in any direction, until the leaf 68 is swung outwardly at right angles from its stop bead upon which mounted, to the position illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings and in which case the movable retainer H may then be swung into the room into the position illustrated. in

As is illustrated in Figure 3 of the draw-i ings, the movable sash retainers H upon releasing of the same by opening the detent 65 may be swung inwardly at their upper ends to the said position as illustrated, and the lower ends of the retainers may be lifted upwardly and pivot on the sill struc ture of the window casing to support the lower sash at an inclination to the vertical, sloping into the room; the lower sash thus being entirely support-ed by the movable retainers H. The weight cord 25 may then be detached from the sashes and temporarily hooked to the casing jamb, and the lower sash may then be removed, as well as the movable retainers H. The upper sash'C may then be lowered and removed by bodily moving the same inwardly towards the room; the
sash C in height being less than the distance from the sill to the lower edge of the rigid retainers K, to permit such detachment-of the sash C, or swinging into a room to facllitate its handling.
The movable retainers H are attached to the window casing without nails or screws, and are readily. detachable or movable with respect to the window casings, in order to permit access to the sashes, for inward swinging for cleansing purposes, or to facilitate the removal of the sashes.
In some instances it may be desirable to apply the principle of this invention to present window constructions, and to this end Figure 5 illustrates a modification of the movable retainer H; the movable retainer L of this view comprising a metal back piece 80, upon which the parting bead or strip 81 and the stop strip or bead 82 are connected in spaced relation to provide the sash channel 88. The stop beads 81 and 82 are otherwise formed exactly similar to the construction of the movable retainer H, as above described, and it is to be understood that the upper end of the retainer L is beveled the same as above described .for the movable retainer H, and the beads 81 and 82 are stepped at their lower ends and respectively provided with attaching shanks 85 and 86, as above described for the retainer H.
From the foregoing description of this invention it is apparent that a novel type of window construction has been provided embodying an adjustment which will permit of the easy handling of the sashes, for the purposes of access, or to permit the removal of the same.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrang-ement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a window construction the combination of a window casing including side stiles, a sash, retaining means for the sash including an upper fixed retainer for each of the side stiles and a lower movable retainer for each of the side stiles, each of the fixed and movable retainer of each side stile including space d parting and stop beads providing a channel for receiving the sash therein, the lower edge of the fixed retainer and the upper edge of the movable retainer at each side stile, sloping from the inner side of the window casing downwardly towards the outer side of the window casing and being beveled from the side stile parallel with the plane of the window opening downwardly towards the window opening, and means for detachably holding the movable retainers in position below said beveled ends of the retainers including sockets formed in the lower portion of the window casing and project- INS lltl

ing spaced shanks carried at the lower end of the movable retainers for fitting in said sockets.
2. As an article of manufacture a retainer for sashes of window constructions comprising a body piece having rigid spaced parting and stop beads thereon to provide a sash receiving channel, the upper edge of said retainer being beveled transversely from front to back and from one side edge to the opposite side edge, retaining shanks projecting from the lower end of said retainer, and movable detent means carried by the retainer intermediate the ends thereof.
3; As an article of manufacture a retainer for sashes of window constructions comprising a body piece having rigid spaced parting and stop beads thereon to provide a sash receiving channel, the upper edge of said retainer being beveled transversely from front to back and from one side edge to the opposite side edge, retaining shanks project ing from the lower end of said retainer, and movable detent means carried by the retainer intermediate the ends thereof upon said stop bead and including a hinged leaf having a locking projection thereon, the retainer having a socket for receiving the locking projection therein.
l. As an article of manufacture a retainer for sashes of window constructions comprisinga body piece having rigid spaced parting and stop beads thereon in spaced relation to provide a sash receiving channel, and retaining shanks projecting in spaced relation below the lower edge of the retainer in alignment with each of the parting and stop heads.
5. As an article of manufacture a detachable sash retainer for window constructions comprising a body piece having rigid spaced. parting and stop beads in spaced parallel relation providing a sash receiving channel at the inner side of the retainer, said retainer at the lower ends thereof having the parting and stop beads disposed in an offset stepped relation, and reduced shanks projecting beyond the stepped ends of the parting and stop beads in alignment with said beads.
6. As an article of manufacture a detachable sash retainer for window constructions comprising a body having rigid spaced parting and stop beads thereon in spaced relation providing a channel therebetween for receiving a sash, the body having a socket disposed transversely therethrough at the stop head, a member hinged at the outer side of the stop head in spaced relation with respect to said socket opening, and an arcuate detent finger on said hinged'mem- 'bcr adapted to swing in the socket opening when the hinged member is moved towards the stop bead.
7. As an article of manufacture a detachable sash retainer for window constructions comprising a metallic supporting body having spaced parallel stop and parting beads at aside thereof to provide a sashreceiving channel, means for detachably securing said retainer to a window construction including a detent movably carried by the stop bead for engaging a window casing, and spaced stepped retaining shanks extending below in alignment with the parting and stopbea-ds.
8. In a window construction the combination of a window casing including side stiles and a sill construction including an inside stool and a base sill stepped below the in side stool, said inside stool and base sill at each of the side stileshaving upwardly facing sockets therein in a spaced relation, a sash, and retaining means for the sash at each of the side stiles including an upper. lined retainer for each side stile and a lower movable retainer for each side stile, each of the fixed and movable retainers of eachside stile including spaced parting and stop beads roviding a channel for receiving the sash therein, the lower edge. of the upper fixed retainer and the upper edge of the lower movable retainer at each side stile being formed to prevent transverse relative movement of the same, the lower ends of the movable retainer portions having the parting and stop beads thereof disposed in an offset stepped relation, and having reduced shanks projecting in alignment with the beads for detachably seating in the sockets'of said inside stool and base sill, and detent means carried by said movable retainers having means on the side stiles for engagement to hold the movable retainers in releasable positions.
