UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WLLIAII I-I. SIEMON, OF WILKINSBRG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC t MANFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- VANIA. j
KNIFE-BLADE SWITCH.
Application filed October 4, 1922. Serial No. 592,252.
My invention relates to knife-blade switches and particularly to the blades thereof and the method of making the same.
Ny invention has for its object the provision of a knife-blade switch that may be manufactured at a low cost and which is of substantial construction and also to provide a blade of such form that the handle may befreadily attached thereto.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved method of making switch blades and similar devices.
I accomplish the foregoing objects by providing a bar of copper, or other suitable metal, having a slot at one end thereof, inserting a member of substantially conical shape in the slot, and securing the two together. The inserted member, being provided with a threaded opening, forms a screw seat for attaching a handle to the blade.
I-Ieretofore, in the construction of switch blades, the metallic bar has been subjected to upsetting and drawing processes. Such operations have a tendency to crystallize `and weaken the metal in the blade. blade, the metallic bar is subjected only to In my a punching process, which produces no deleterious effect upon the remaining metal of the blade.
Figure l is a perspective view of t-he inserted member.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blade member.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the assembled knife-blade member.
In the several views, similar reference characters indicate like parts.
A bar of suitable conducting metal 1, such as copper', is provided at one end with a slot 2, preferably formed by a punching process. An opening 3 is provided adjacent to the opposite end for the reception of a pivot pin, or other securing lmeans (not shown).
A second metallic member l is provided, having a body portion somewhat greater in width than blade l. The surface of this member is provided with oppositely arranged slots 5, and a threaded opening 6 is provided at one end. Preferably, member 4L is of a somewhat conical, or acorn, shape, although any desired form of shape may be employed. The slots 5 are parallel with each other, as is shown in Fig. 3.
In assembling the switch blade, themember 4 is placed in the slot 2, whereupon the edges of the slot 2 seat themselves in vthe slots 5. The members l and 4; may then be secured by any suitable means, such as by crimping, welding or soldering.
A knob or handle 7 is then secured to the blade by means of a screw 8, seated in the Vthread-ed opening 6. By having member 4' of a conical form, the forces exerted by the screw 8 upon the member Ll are evenly distributed throughout the latter to the blade member' l. A relatively smooth surface is also provided, making a neat appearing and ruggedV construction.
It will thusbe seen that I have provided a two-part switch blade which is simple of manufacture,r and which has the required strength, witghfa minimum amount of material. I.
My deviceI is not limited in its ap lication to switch blades, and various mo ifications may be made therein without departing from the;` spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the accompanying claims. Y
I claim as my invention:
l. An electric switch member comprising a blade member having a slot at one' end, a conical slotted member seated in the slot of said blade member, a slot of the second member forming a seat for the adjacent edge of the blade member.
2. An electric switch member comprising a blade member having a slot at one end, a conical slotted member seated in the slot of said blade member, a slot of the second member forming a seat for the adjacent edge of the blade member, said second member being provided with a threaded opening, and a handle secured by a screw co-operating with said threaded opening.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 28th day of September 1922.
WILLIAM H. SIEMON.
