,BOTTLE-CAPPING' MACHINE.
Application med January 27, 1'9'26. serial Np. 84,088.
My invention relates, more particularly, to machines for applying caps, such as metal caps required to be bent into place, to the mouths of bottles to seal them; primary object being to provide a novel', simple, sturdy and inexpensive type of bottle capping machinekwhich will be highly eii'ective in operation. l
`Referring to the 'accompanying ingzj Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a bottle1-capp1ng machine embodying my im-` provements. Figure 2 is. a section taken at the line-2 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the directionE of the arrows; and Figure 3, a section talrenfat the. line 3 on Fig.- 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow. l
Referring to the particular illustrated embodiment ot' my invention, the machine comprises a base member 4 shown asy adapted to be secured, as by bolts 5, to a' table or other support upon which the bottles to` be capped rest, it being understood` that, if desired, the base member 4 may be provided with a plate' extension to overlie. the'v support. and serve as the meansl for directly supporting the bottle tofbefcapped. RisingY from theA base 4fis anupright 6' formed of a rod which, by preference, extends atits f lower end into an.V upwardly openingsocket (not shown.) in theA base- 4 and in whichl the upright 6 is securely. positioned by ascrew 7 vtl-ireadedin' the base. 4y andengagingY the side of the upright,the upright 6. beingI o-circular shape in cross section through'- out its length-except at the flattened Side portion thereofrepresented atrS;
The. uprightf 6 forms.- a support Jfor a vertically adjustable capping-head 9 shown as of a form presenting a plate portion 10 carrying rearward-ly extending vertically. spaced apart lugs 11V containingv circular vertically aligned openings therethrough` through which the upright 6. extends, this l head having slidin-gfit on the upright. The
opposite edge portion of the Vplate portion 10 isv provided with vertically spaced apart lugs- 12, and: 13 which containv vertically aligned apertures in which al capping-elefis verticallyv re:- c-iprcca-ble; The capping-elementi is-Ormed off a, rod, in the openings in the lugsl12'anc'l13, and al cup 16 secured to th-e lower end of the rod below; thelug'li a'nd'p'rovided for enor stein, portion 15y which slidesv to, the lug 12, and between this stop pin and the bottom wal-lof an upwardly-opening socket 18 in the lug1j3, a coil spring 19 surrounding, the rod 15 is interposed.
The means shown for depressingthe cap* ping-element14 comprise a lever 20 having a Ablfurcated portion 21l at which it straddles the head 9 and to which latter it is ypivotally secured as by the pivot pin 22,
the arms ofthe bifurcated portion 2l of the lever v bearing against the. ends of` the cross pin 17', whereby when the lever 20 is depressed, it forces the capping-element downwardly againstv the resistance of the spring 19.` Y
The means employed for holding the head 9 in vertically adjusted position o n the upright 6, to adapt the machine for applying. capsto bottles` of ld itlterent heights, comprises a friction-plate device formed of a pair of plate`s-23 and' 24 containingapertures 25 through which the upright 6 eX- tends, these apertures being of thev same shape as the cross-sectional contour ofA the upright 8, but of slightly larger size than the crosssectional area of the lupright, whereby these plates are adapted for slight tilting movement relative to the upright'` The.4 inner ends of the plates v23- and 24, whicharelocated in the space between the lug-s 11, arefbifurcated asrepresented atv125,`
toy provide the1 spacedV lugportions 26 `and plates, .andfthus theentirehead 9, to the up-v fight kand thereby holdy the heed Securely against: ver-tical displacement' 0n' the. upright: daring' the caprins! Operation The y Plates -yond the lugs lltherebyrendering them ac.
cessible to be grasped and pressed together by the operator, against the tension ofthe spring 30 to release the frictional grip between them and the uprightand thereby permit the head 9 to be slid up or down on the upright to any desired position of adjustment, the friction-plate structure just described operating automatically, when the operator releases his grasp on the plates, to securely grip the head to the upright.
In the-particular construction shown, and in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention,'the plates 23 and 24 serve to prevent rotation of the head 9 on the upright, Vdue Vto the shaping of the openings 25 therein to generally conform with the cross-sectional contour of the upright G.
It will be understood from the foregoing that a capping machineconstructed in accordance with my invention is not only of simple and durable construction, and adapte ed for ready and positive operation, but also is of relatively inexpensive construction, one of the features thereof rendering the machine of relatively inexpensive construction being that of providing the upright 6 of noncircular shape in cross-section and providing means Von the head for preventing the head from turning on the upright preferably by so shaping the openings in the plates 23 and 24 that turning thereof on the upright is prevented. In this connection it will be noted that the necessity of forming the openings through the lugs 1l of non-circular form with attendant expense is avoided.
Vhile l have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying iny in-v vention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified andaltered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
