IMPROVEMENT IN CULINARY UTENSILS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,354, dated J 11110 8, 1875; application filed March 20, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN H. WEARE and NATHAN WEARE, both of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Culinary Utensils, of which the following is a specification:

Our invention relates to improvements on the class of cooking-vessels having side pipes connecting with the stove-top to carry off vapors from the article cooking therein, and thus prevent the escape of the vapors into the room; and our invention consists in such a construction and method of attachment of a detachable plate, which acts to form the vaper-vent, that the vapor-vent is formed entirely outside of the vessel, so that the inside may be of regular continuous configuration for the convenience of scouring.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of a cooking-pot embracing our invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through the vapor-duct of the vessel. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the bottom of the vessel.

A is the body of an ordinary cast-iron pot, adapted to fit the hole of a stove-top, resting at the rim a on the exterior of the hole, so that a space is left inside of this rim for the passage of vapor from the "apor-duct at the side into the stove. Side flanges B B are formed upon the body of the vessel, between which the detachable plate 0 is snugly embraced. This construction of flanges B and plain-edged plate to fit said flanges provides for a close-fitting joint between the surfaces by convenient molding and forcible fitting in of the detachable plate, the thin flanges being adapted to give and adapt themselves to the line of the edges of the plate 0. The detachable plate 0 is applied sidewise, and secured to the top of the vessel, as shown in a former'patent of ours, by the stud e, which projects through an aperture in said plate sufficiently to receive a pin or nail, c. In order to permit the use of a round cover, we proj ect from the inside surface of plate 0 a flange, d, as shown, which may be perforated, as shown, so that the perforationsf may then be dispensed with, the perforations in the flange alone serving to supply the small quantity of air necessary to facilitate the draft through.

This hooking is effected necessarily before the fastening at the top, by studs 0 and pin 0, is effected. The plate O is provided with the halfcircle bail-ears shown in a former patent of ours.

We claim- 1. The vessel A, in combination with the plate O, suitably attached at the top, and provided with the lugs g g, adapted to engage inside of the rim a, to effect the bottom fastening, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The vessel A, in combination with the detachable plate Q, having flange d, substantially as and for the purposespecified.

3. The combination of vessel A, having clampingflanges B B and laterally-applicable plate O, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
