ooAsrER-WAGON BODY.
Appiication flied .Tuiy 24, 1925. serial No. 45,810.
The present invention relates to a body construction for toy coaster wagonsand provides a body the-bottoni of which is adapted to be permanently secured to the running gear while the superstructure, consisting of this view also showing the runningrgear broken away;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the side pieces of the body; and l l Figures 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views, illustrating the manner in whiclrthe 'l superstructure is attached yto and detached from the bottom 'of the body.
Toy wagons as at present constructed have p the body built up as a unit and secured to the running gear. Children often like tov 53 use these wagons for coasting merely with the latbottom attached to the running gear. The present invention enables the superstructure of the body to be readily removed whenA it is'desired to use the wagon for coast- ":i ing and to be replaced whenit is desired to use the wagon for other purposes.
In the construction illustrated the body comprises the bottom 2 which may consist of one or several pieces secured to the front F..i and rearfbolsters 3 and 4 and to the braces 5 and 6. The superstructure of the body comprises the side pieces 7 and 8 and the end pieces 9 and 10. The side pieces 7 and 8 have grooves 11 and 12 extending from their if upperedges and terminating adjacent their lower edges. In these grooves fit the end edges of the end pieces 9 and 10. The side and end pieces may be permanently secured' together in any suitable manner Vto form a N #l5 unitary superstructure.
lVhen the superstructure is applied tothe ybottom the side pieces extend a slight' `dis' tance below the longitudinal edges of the bottom, while the end pieces have their 5" lower edges notched as at r13 to engage the engage the lower face of the bottom of the wagon body, as illustrated more clearly in Figures 4 and 5. 'Ilie other side piece 7 has an` inclined groove in its inner face, the
` said groove being located adjacent the lower edge of the side piece and centrally thereof. Pivotally mounted on the lower face of the bottom 2 is a lever 16 which is adapted to have its end swung into the groove 15 when the parts are in the position illustrated inY Figure 5. This lever has a wedging action onthe walls' of the groove, which wedging action serves to securely fasten the superstructure to the bottom of the body.
It will be apparent that the superstructure of the wagon body is attached to and re moved from the bottom thereof on the same plan asopening and closing a door; that is, the superstructure has a hinging action about the angle VY14 on the one side, the other side sliding vdown over thel bottom and being secured by the swinging lever 16. This construction makes it very easy to attach ,or detach the superstructure without disturb*- ing any of the main parts of the running gear of the wagon. j
While I have shown andv described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the-details of construction shown, but that it may be otherwise embodied within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention;
I claim:
In a vehicle structure, a bottom, a superstructure having oppositely disposed edges extending below the undersurface of the bottom and oppositely disposed edges engaging the upper surfaces of the bottom for supporting the superstructure, a securing'device carried by one of the downwardly ex? tending edges and engaging the undersurface of the bottom and another securing device detachably cooperating with the bottom and another edge, whereby the superstructure is removable fromv the bottom only by a turning movement about an axis substantially parallel to the plane of the bottom to permit the separating ofthe first named securing device and the bottom.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.V
OWEN L. LEWIS.
