IMPROVEMENT IN SWIVEL-BANDS FOR FIRE-ARMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,267, dated June 8, 1875; application filed May 7, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J EFFERSON M. OLOUGH, of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Olamp and Swivel-Band for Guns, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to bands and swivels for small-arms; and the invention consists of a hollow screw applied to the band in such a manner as to serve as a means for tightening the band, and also as a bearing for the swivel or loop, all as hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 is an edge or side view, and Fig. 2 a front View, of the device as applied to a gun. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views of portions shown detached.

In constructing my improved device I make a band, A, of the usual form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it being open at its under side, and provided with ears n, for the insertion of a screw for tightening it up when in place. I then provide a tubular screw, (0, as represented in Figs. 3 and 4, it having a screwthread on one end, and a polygonal head on the other. Through this screw 1 drill a small hole laterally at its center, as shown in Fig. 3, to receive a pin, 0, as represented in Fig. 4. The loop B is composed of a piece of wire of suitable size, cut to the proper length, and then having its two ends bent around toward each other, but twisted apart sidewise, as represented in Fig. 5, so that it can be readily slipped through the tubular screw a, and also through the ears n of the band.

The loop B is first shoved through the ears n of the band A. The tubular screw on is then slipped on, the two ends brought in line, and the screw shoved along, so as to inclose the two ends and bring the hole e opposite the narrow space left between the adjoining ends of the loop, when the pin 0 is driven tightly into the hole 6, thereby preventing the loop from moving endwise in the screw, after which the screw a is inserted in the hole in the cars a, and screwed upas tightly as may be required.

The device is simple and economical, and it afit'ords a means of tightening the band, so as to retain it in place, dispensing with the spring ordinarily inserted in the stock for that purpose.

By turning the screw a the band can be loosened or tightened, as desired, without at all affecting the loop, and neither the screw nor the loop is liable to become lost or displaced.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. The clamp-band A, in combination with the tubular screw a and loop B, substantially as described.

2. A swivel for guns, consisting of a loop, B, having its ends mounted in a tubular screw, with a pin, 0, inserted in said screw between the ends of the loop, as set forth.
