Upon the ends ofthis'shaft are mounted a pair of gearv segments 12 andvthese are secured to the back Lot a reflector casing 13. The reflector is of a suitable construction to concentrate the. suns rays. received thereon whensaid raysare` directed on to the surface at somewhat,approaching a right angle and itis the purpose of this invention to maintain this reflecting surface in such a position throughout the day that the suns rays will strike it at lthe desired angle at all times. In order to accomplish this result, it is the gear r1 n g The shaft an d Y tilt .the reflector, and to obtain this result a pair of spur pinions 14 are mounted on studs projecting from the rotatable standard G and these pinions mesh with the gear segments 12.
A ring 15 is mounted upon. the column f2 outside of the upper journal l and is provided witli gear teeth 16A adapted to mesh with the gear pinions. rl`hese gear teeth extend substantially half way around the column so that as the column rotates upon its axis7` the pinions on one side will travel for a distance without meshing with the gear wheel ring 15. In the operation ofthe device the shaft 10 is driven so as to rotate the vertical shaft 5 one revolution in twenty four hours and the pinions 14 and gear ring 15 are so arranged that at midnight one of the pinions will engage the gear teeth 16. As the column slowly turns, the teeth of the gear ringv engaging the pinion carried by the column, causes the pinion to turn on its axis and this imparts a rotating movement to the gear segments 12 so that "the reflector is gradually swung upon its transverse axis toward a horizont-al position.
In twelve hours the maximum movement of the reflector member has been reached. During this period the pinion at the -oppo` site side of the standard has been travelling free over the portion of the ring not provided ywith teeth but when the pinion which hasY been engaging these teethdisengages therefrom, the other pinionv comes into engagement and as it is-arranged on the opposite side ofthe standard and connected with the gear segment Von the opposite side, the movement. of the pinion has the effectof reversing the swinging movement of the reflecting member bringing it back towardv the perpendicular.
It will thus be seen that the refiecting surface will follow the rising sun as its `elevation increases at mid-day when it reverses its movement and follows it toward its position at setting.
Thus. the `device is utilized to its maxirnum efficiency in concentrating the suns rays reflected therefrom over the maximum period. f
