UNITED STATES LESLIE G. BOWEN, OF BEDFORD, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO BOWEN '& PHELPS BATTERY 1,642,224? PATENT OFFICE JF;
(10., OF BEDFORD, IOWA, A CORPORATION OF IOWA. v
BATTERY BINDING POST.
Application filed April 9, 1926. Serial No. 100,907.
My invention relates to battery binding posts and more particularly to the bind ng post for a storage battery or similar device.
It is a purpose of my invention to provide a binding post construction for a storage battery that will prevent leakage of gas or acid around the binding post, the same being perfectly sealed in the battery cover.
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide new and improved means for clamping the binding post to the battery cover, comprising a nut screw-threadedly engaging the binding post externally of the cover and a washer that is seated in a recess in the cover, and which is surrounded by sealing. material to provide a tight seal The washer is referably provided with projections for keying the same in the sealing compound, and the binding post is preferably made smooth below the threaded portion thereof so that the same can be readily withdrawn from the sealing compound b heating the same. soas to make the sea ing material plastic around the binding post.-
to the exact details shown or described, but
that I intend to include as partof my invention all such changes and modifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View, partly broken away, of the upper portion of a battery,
showing my improved terminal thereon.
Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view of the battery terminal and adjoining parts of the battery, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the battery cover and the terminal separated.
Referring in detail'to the drawings:
My improved binding post is applied to abattery 10 having the cell containers 11 of acid resisting, insulating material, each of said cells being provided with a cover member 12 whch is preferably of hard rubber and which is provided with a depending portion 13 having an outwardly directed flange portion 14 that fits within the wall portion 11. The cover is further'proi I vided with an inwardly extending boss 15 having an inturned flange 16 and forming a recess through which the terminal extends, a circular opening 17 being provided for the terminal within the flange 16." An upwardly extending or outwardly extending flange 18 is also provided on the cover 12 surrounding the recess 19 formed within the hollow boss 15.
The terminal comprises a base member 20 which is adapted to engage the underside of the flange portion 14 of the cover 12 and which has a lateral enlargement 21 centrally thereof, the stem portion 22 extending from the central portion of the base 20 and the portion thereof lying within the recess being substantially smooth and terminating in a threaded end 23 and a reduced end 24 withwhich a suitable terminal 35. is adapted to be engaged.
Mounted in embracing relation to the stem 22 of the terminal is a flanged gasket or washer 25 which engages with the flange 18 and which has the inwardly extending tions 27. A nut 28 having projections 29 thereon so that the same can be engaged with a suitable tool for turning the same is screw-threadedly engaged with the threaded portion 23 of the terminal 22 to clamp the terminal in position and force the gasket or washer 25 into the recess 19 and furthermore to cause the base portion 20 to engage both with the flanges 16 and the flanges 14.
A suitable plastic sealing material 34 is poured into the recess 19 before the gasket 25 is inserted therein, after which the nut 29 is screwed down, thus firmly embedding the gasket in the sealing material and causing the sealing material to flow around the gasket to make a perfect seal, the projections 27 keying the gasket in the sealing material.
Similar sealing material 30 is also provided course, secured to the base members 20 in any suitable manner, as by welding. Due to the fact that the base members 20 engage not only with the flanges 16 but also with the flanges 14, a'firm seating of the base memher with no undue strain on the flange 16 is obtained Also due to the fact that suhstantially the entire threaded portion of the terminal lies outwardly of the recess 19 it is a simple matter to remove the terminal from the cover by heating the terminal when the sealing material 34: will become soft and the terminal can be withdrawn from thecover.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
L The combination with a battery, having an insulating cover provided with a terminal receiving recess, of a terminal having a base portion engaging the under side of said cover, a stem portion projecting from said base through said recess,' a washer on said stein engaging said cover and having a portion projecting into said recess having keying means thereon, sealing materiel in said recess and around the portion of said Washer extending into said recess, and means engaging said stein to clamp said washer in said recess and said base portion against the under side of said cover.
2. The combination with a hattery, having an insulating cover provided with a terminal receiving recess of a terminal having a base reeaaaa portion engaging the under side of said cover, a stem portion projecting from said base through said recess, a washer on said stem engaging said cover and having a portion projecting into said recess having projections thereon, sealing material in said recess and around the portion of said Washer extending into said recess, and means engag= ing said stem to clamp said washer in said recess, and said base portion against the under side of said cover 3.. The combination with a battery, having an insulating cover provided with a terminal receiving recess, of a terminal having a base portion engaging the under side of said cover, a stem portion projecting from said base through said recess, the major portion of said stem lying in said recess being smooth, a washer having a flange extending into said recess embracing the smooth portion of said stem, said flange having projections thereon sealing material in said recess around said stem and embracing said flange, said stem having a threaded portion lying outwardly beyond said smooth por= tion, and a clamping nut engaging the threaded portion of said stem.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
