TOP-FEED DOOR FOR REFUSE DESTRUCTORS .AND OTHER FURNACES.
Application filed November 7, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanically operated top feed doors for refuse destructors and other furnaces of the type in which the operating means first cause the door to be raised from its seating and then moves the door horizontally from over the opening into the furnace.
rIhe present invention consists in the combination with the feed door of a supporting frame, the feed door being capable of vertical movement in relation thereto, a feeding chute or tundish carried by the supporting frame, and means for giving a lifting movement to the door followed by a longitudinal movement of the whole device.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a longitudinal section through the door and operating means.
Fig. 2 is a plan of same. y
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3 Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a detail view of the crank'for raising the door from its seating. l
Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the slotted lugs from which the door is suspended.
The door A and the tundish or chute B, which is moved into position over the opening C into the furnace when the door A is removed therefrom, are both carried by a single framing D. The framing D is provided with two pairs of lugs Z1 which rest on the shafts E El on which are loosely mounted Wheels e el running on the rails or runways F2.
The door A is suspended from the shaft E by a pair of slotted lugs al each formed with a. semi-cylindrical projecting portion a2 the flat face of which is adapted to be engaged by a correspondingly shaped portion f on a sleeve F keyed on the shaft E. The sleeve F at one end of the shaft E forms the end of a depending lever or rod F1 forked at its lower end f1.
A depending lever G is mounted on a shaft El adjacent to one of the wheels e1 and the lever G is connected to the corresponding lever or rod F1 by a connecting rod g` so that any krotary movement imparted to the shaft E is communicated to the lever F1.
Serial No. 67,695.
A link h is affixed to the shaft E1 and is connected to a horizontal link H the free end of which is adapted to be engaged b the end of a ram K operated by compresse air, steam or other fluid pressure so that when the ram K moves outwards from its cylinder 7c the links L and H will be moved to rotate the shaft El. The motion of the link H is limited to the ram coming into contact with the bracket H1 fixed to the frame-work so that further movement of the ram pushes the whole of the loose frame-work and chute bodily forwards. v
The charging door A which is preferably lined with firebrick although suspended from the shaft E is separated from the framing D vand the chute or tundish B and can be raised from and lowered on to its seating lwithout movement being imparted to the framing and the chute or tundish.
In operation when it is desired to feed a fresh charge into the furnace the ram K is operated and moves forward rotating the shaft El through the links h and H. The rotation of the shaft `is imparted to` the lever o1' arm F1 the shaft E and the sleeves F the face of which engages with the part wz of the corresponding lugs@1 causing the door to be raised from its seating. The further movement of the ram K engages the bracket H1 and moves` forward the whole of the framing, door and chute or tundish, to remove the door from over the furnace opening and bring the chute or tundish in position over the opening.
After the charge has been fed into the furnace the reverse series of operations take place7 the framing, door and chute or runway being first moved into the original position and the door then lowered on to its seating. v
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is'z- In combination with a top feed door of an incinerator or like furnace, a supporting frame foi-said door, means connecting said door tothe said frame and permitting verltical movement of said door relative to said frame, a feed chute carried by said frame and moving longitudinally therewith to occupy the position of said door when the latter is moved from its closure position, the framing adapted to be engaged by said shafts supporting said door and framing, ram after the latter has moved a predeter- Wheels loosely mounted on said shafts, levers mined amount to move the Whole device lon- 1 and connecting rods2 connecting said shafts gitudinally.
together, a link carried by one shaft, a fluid In testimony whereof I have hereunto set actuated ram adapted to engage said link to my hand.
rotate said shafts, and a bracket axed to WILLIAM JAMES BULGIN.
