This invention relates to' knock-down set-- up boxes more particularly intended for hat boxes for use by retail milliners, though also being welladapted to use in the jewelry trade and for use in shipping goods, said boxes being of heavy paperboard or card board and, of course, varying in weight in accordance with the purpose to which it is to be put in use, and the present invention l0 has more p articularly in view the means for locking sections of such a box together in assembled relation and means for maintaining said lockingor interengaging means in operative position; 'l
Boxes of this type have given excellent results, but the added material, labor and wastage involved in afiixing or providing a locking flange on the body member has involved considerable expense in the total, vconsidered on a quantity production basis.
Also, a rather heavy and expensive weight' of material or paper board has heretofore had to be used to be sure of the sides of the body and the lip of the bottom section remaining stifl` in spread position in order that the locking meanson said body and said lip will remain in interlocking engagement. Also, it has been found that it is not feasible with prior known constructions having a continuous lip to fold the lipsof said bottom sections flat to conserve space in shipping and storing and have them operate to the' desired eiciency as thereafter assembled;
and, further, it has been found that in order that said lips may be folded appreciably to save space and still function to a passable extent as thereafter assembled it is necessary to fold the entire lip inward toward the inner face of the bottom section, which folding operation requires considerable care and time, and therefore expense, and results in a rather clumsy folded constructionv that does'v not make a solid stack or bundle and gives an awkward appearance to the individual bottom sections.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a box vof the above type of a parti'cular construction in which the locking flange or elementor tongues on the body element` may be stamped out from the body member in the same stamping operation by y,which the blank for said body member' or section is formed, so being integral therewith and avoiding all expense for labor and material in especially subsequently providing it; to provide a construction whichwill particularly lend itself to a very light material without sacrifice of security of engagement of the interengaging or locking means; andto provide a construction wherein the lips of the bottom section may be folded flat Within a minimum time andl with minimum effort and care and will lie Hat and make a slick solid compact stack or bundle for shipment and storage while increasing the security of the interlock and permitting the use of light weight inexpensive material without sacrificing a-ny degree of security or ease of assemblage, all of which objects, among others, are accomplished by the construction, combination and arrangement of arts all as hereinafter more particularly set fort-h, described and claimed.

Referring now in detail to the drawings,
' A. designates the cover or top section of the boX, B the body section or ring and C the bottom section having an edge flange or lip D provided with a preferably continuous interior locking flange E having an abrupt edge face presented downwardly toward the upperface of said bottom section.
The body section B has integral depending flanges F having their end edges mitered, said flanges, in the assembled box, lying against the upper face of the bottom section .substantially at right angles to the sides of said-body portion with their end edges in, or substantially in, engagement to act as a bracing and spreading device to hold the lower part of the body section spread and prevent its deformation to 'maintain the locking tongues l in such position that their ends will be in locking engagement with the lower abrupt edge face of the corresponding locking llange E.
The locking tongues l are formed by making inverted approximately U-shaped cuts in the lower part of the body portion or section B, severing the material thereof on three sides and leaving the tongues integral with the body section along a line coincident, as shown, or substantially coincident, with the line along which the respective spreading flanges F fold inward, so that the inward folding of the latter will cause the outward protrusion of said tongues l, the material of which they are formed and their combination with the respective spreading flanges F resulting in said tongues l each being slightly yieldingly resilient and being yieldingly resilientlyheld or positioned as a whole, so that when the bottom C is applied its lip D and flange E in engaging with the respective outer faces of the lower part of the body section B will engage the lower outer faces ofsaid locking tongues or small locking flanges l and cause them to yieldingly resiliently fold back toward the adjacent face of the respective outer faces of the body section B and at least partially back intothe openings from which they are respectively cut until the lower face o1' a-brupt'edge of the locking flange E passes upward far enough to release said tongues 1, which will then spring outward due to their resiliency, until their outer faces are in engagement with the inner face of the lip D and their upper edge or end faces are directly beneath and in, or substantially in, contact with the lower abrupt edge face of said locking flange E.
As thus described the body section may be used with a heavy material stiff bottom section C regardless of the lip corner construction.
However, in order that light cheap material may be used for the body section B and for the bottom section C and lip D and that said sections may be folded in the easiest and most economical manner to the most compact flat state for shipment and storage and still as ,assembled make a very tight lit with each other without any appreciable separation or bulge apart between corners, I form the body section B with slots, preferably arcuate as shown, near each corner, all of said slots being of the saine size and form, in the same horizontal plane, and preferably equidistant from their respective corners, as shown. These slots may, of course, be made during the stamping out of the body section blank.
To cooperate with said slots I form the lip D with a very appreciable extension 2 at each corner, said extensions being illustrated as substantially equal in height to the height of the lip D between said extension and as being integral therewith and being continuous and extending on both sides of the corners respectively and each itself having sharp upper distant corners 3, said corners 3 of each extension 2 projecting through the respective slots adjacentthe respective corners of the. body member `B and lying against the inner face of the adjacent portions of the respective sides of said body section B and bulging said material of Said sides slightly outward at said points, so putting the body section B and the end section G under opposed tensions, resulting in holding the lip D in snug engagement at all points with the lower part of body section B and so insuring a snug fit and positive locking engagement between the tongues l and the flange E at all times.
Further, by providing the corner extensions 2 I provide greater space for pasting or otherwise suitably connecting the elements of the lip together at the corners of the section C, thus securingv greater strength for a given size and weight of lip E and also, because of such extensions 2 I obtain added strength to the box as assembled at the points where it is most liable to be knocked and put to the greatest test in use.
In the modification illustrated in Figures G, 7 and 8 I have substituted two independent tongues 2 at each corner for the corner extension, these tongues extending through horizontal slots in the adjacent sides of the body section B. Otherwise the construetion and operation are the same as in the preferred form, only the opposition of the tension of the one section to that of the other is far less pronounced and the advantages of greater strength at the corners and greater space for pasting are not present.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
1. A receptacle comprising two paperboard sections, one of said sections being and the other of said sections being formed;
to snugly partially receive the former sectionalid having a locking flange adapted to ride over said resilient tongues. until it passes beyond said tongues, said tongues being adapted to spring out when free` from said flange in order that their: edges may lie i-n the path of travel of saidl locking flange in the reverse direction to prevent the separation of said sections.
2. A receptacle 'comprising two paperboard sections, one of` said sections being provided with spring tongues and theother of said sections being formed to snugly partially receive said former section and having a locking flange adapted to ride over said tongues until it passes beyond them, said tongues being adapted to spring out when free from said flange in order that their edges may lie in the path of travel, in the reverse direction, of said flange, and said sections being formed to have interlocking bracing engagement with each otherV in a horizontal plane beyond said locking Aflange to set up opposed tensions thoughout all portions of each of said sections lying in and adjacent to said plane, whereby to maintain said flange and said tongues in operative relation.
3. A receptacle comprising two paperboard sections, one of said sections being provided with spring tongues and the otherl of saidsections bein formed to snugly partially receive said former section andlhaving a locking flange adapted to ride over said tongues until it passes beyond them, said tongues being adapted to spring out when free from said flange' in order that their edges.wil1 lie in -the path of travel, in the reverse direction, of lsaid ange,'and said sections being angular in cross section and being formed to have interlocking bracing engagement with each other at the respective corners in a horizontal plane beyond said locking flange to set up opposed tensions vthroughout all portions of each of said sections lying in and 'adjacent to said plane to hold the opposedr faces vof said flange andy thc first mentioned section in snug engagement to maintain said locking tongues and flange in operative relation.
4. A receptacle comprising a .continuous deformable permanently tubular form body section and a bottom sect-ion having a continuous lip, said sections beingl of paperboard, in combination -with interengagin means carried by said body section and sai lip on all'sides of said receptacle, said sections being angular in cross-section, and said body section .being formed with two slots adjacent to, and equi-distant from, its re- V-spective corners, and the lip of said bottom section being provided with vertical extensions at its respective corner portions respectively received in said slots to thereby oppose the spring action of the bottom section to the spring action of the body section, whereby said lip and said body section will be maintained taut and in snug engagement throughout the length of their opposed faces in order to maintain said interengaging means at all points in operative position.
5. A receptacle comprising a body section and a bottomsection, both sections being of paper, material, in combination with interengaging means carried by said sections, said sections beino'langular in cross-section, said body section eing formed with two arcuate opposed slots adjacent to, and equidistant from and on different sides of, its respective corners and in the same horizontal plane, and said bottom section having a continuous lip provided with vertical extensions, each said extension being located at, and extending equidistantl on each side of, a corner and having their distant upper corner portions received in and extending through the re the lateral face of said body section and adapted to yield to permit the application of an element to said body section *and adapted to snap outwardly when released by such element to assume operative lockinv posit-ion.
A receptacle separate deformable continuous open ended body section for a knockdown set-up paper box, saidbody section being provided at one end with integral foldable spreading and bracing flanges and having a, plurality of duplicate locking tongues integral with said, body section and in the operative position of said flanges protruding beyond the lateral outer faces of said body section and adapted to yield to permit the application of a snug-fitting encircling element to said body section and adapted to snap outwardly when released by said element to 'assume operative lockingposition.
8. A receptacle separate paper bottom section having a body portion, a continuous lip extending entirely about its edge and provided on its inner facel with an element adapted to be engaged by a third element, said section being angular in cross-secti0n and having its lip provided at each corner with a continuous extension away from said body portion providing a greater area in a given size lip for usual connection, said eX- tension being adapted to cooperate with a third element to maintain said lip in correct angular Shape.
