J. M. ENDERS VARIABLE coNDENsER Filed Sept. 22. 1923 Inventor: Jacob M .Enefa by w; faQ-@ H i S Attorney.
Patented Sept. 6, 1927.
UNITED sra-Tasl PAIENrol-Fxca JACQB M. ENDERS, OF SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0I' NEW YORK.
My invention relates to the construction of electrostatic devices such as variable c ondenserscomprising two sets of plates in which the plates of'one set are interleaved with those of the other set and are mounted to be moved relatively thereto. The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of the condenser plates whereby accurate spacing of the plates of each set is assured without the use of separate spacing members.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying specification and dra-wing and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claims'. In the drawing, Figure 1 1s a View partly in section of a condenser involving my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a Adetail drawn to a larger scale.
The condenser comprising my invention lis built up of two sets of substantially semicircular plates, a stationar set l and a movable set 2, the plates of tile two sets being interleaved and relatively movable Without contact. The lates comprising each set are identical. ach stationary plate has three openings '3 of a size to receive the securing means. to be described later.v As shown more clearly in Fig. 3, the plate is rovided at eachopening with two pairsof lntegral ears or boss elements. Ears 4 and 5 of one pair are arranged diametrically opposite each other and roject upwardly on the same side of the p ate. Ears 6 and 7 of the other pair are also arranged diametrically opposite each other but project downwardly on the opposite side of vthe pllate and are displaced 90 degrees from theA rst mentioned pair. This ear formation may be conveniently made by punching an aperture in the plate, from this aperture lancing the plate in four directions and drawing alternately up and down the adjacent ears thus formed. If greater accuracy is desired in the spacing of the plates, the plates may then be finished to give a definite and predetermined height to the ears, the height of the ears being one half the space between plates. A series of plates thus formed ma be stacked to form a unit by inverting eac lalternate plate so that the boss elements of one plate engage the boss elements of the adjacent plate and thus space the plates.
VARIABLE CONDENSER.
Application led September 22, 1923. I Serial No. 664,880.
` For convenience inhandling a set of sta' tionary plates a sleeve l8 may be passed through the opening 3, and the unit thus formed firmly secured to a pair of insulation plates 9 and 10 by bolts 11 and nuts.l 12, a suitable spacing washer 13 being shown between the upper insulation vpla-te 9 and the head of the sleeve 8. f
The plates comprising theV movable set ale each provided with a single openin 14 and with integral spacing ears like t ose of the stationary plates just described.v
They are stacked up in the same manner, each alternate plate being inverted, and the unit firmly clamped on aspindle 15 between a sleeve 16 and a nut 17. The spindle is shown having the usual knob 18 and dial 19.
While I have described only one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the particular form shown and described as it will be apparent that many modificationstherein may be made without departing from the sco e of'my invent-ion as set forth in the appen ed claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
1. In -an electric condenser Va plurality of metal plates veach formed .with a portion of the late fo ded to form a boss on one side of t e plate, and with'a dilerent portion of the plate folded to form a boss on Vthe opposite side of the late, said plates being assembled in parallel relation so that therboss' of one plate falls in juxtaposition with respect to the boss on the adlacent side of the next plate, whereby a spacing is insured be- 'tween the plates greater than the height of 4either adjacent boss between any of the plates.
2. In an electric condenser a plurality of metal plates, each having a boss upon each side thereof, said bosses on each plate being formed by the sections of the plate between 'two incisions in the plate which cross each other, being folded, one with both its faces projectin to one side of the plate and the other Ywit both its faces projecting to one side, to wit, the opposite side of the plate,
and an openin formed in each late between the fold sections of each p ate, said plates being arranged in pai-alle relation with respect to each other and with the bosses in juxtaposition and in ali ent.
3. In an electric-condenser a p urality of nov ' plates. bengarranged in paralle relation with respect to each other and with the bosses in juxtaposition, and in alignment, and means extending through said o enings for binding the plates together in t e relation indicated.
" being" the *original* faces of the-folded serz 4. In an electric condenser, a plurality of metal plates, each (plate havin an opening and a boss forme about sai" opening in sections, vone section extending transverse the 20 plate'on one side' and the other section extendinl transverse the plate on the opposite s ide, t einnerand outer faces of each bossg tions2 said plates being assembled in parall relation with the bosses in juxtaposition, an s means extendinv through said opening for clamping said pilates together. 'n Y In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of September, 1923.
