In matchmachines of the class mentioned, the end of the trough in the region of the cutters, owing to its oblique relation thereto, is of tapering form,.and consequently the succeeding blocks, asthey are reduced by the action of the splintcutters,present a triangular or wedge-like formation. .The I leading or thin edge of the material, as well as the larger block sections must be held close up to the path of the cutters in order to ensure the eflicient actionof the cutters. Heretofore a spring bar has been arranged on the trough so as to overhang and bear upon the top of the blocks, adjacent the path of the cutters, but owingto the variations i i-height of the block sections uniform pressure of the plate thereon throughout the length of the cutting area, was not effected, and in the case of short blocks, or greatly reduced end blocks, the absence of effective pressure thereon resulted in the production of imperfect splints.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple. and efhcient construction whereby a uniform yielding pressure is eliicfently applied along the forward edge of the match stock in the region of the cutters, irrespec tive of the varying heightsor dimensions of the blocks within limits, which pressure is effectually maintained until the last match splint has been cut from each succeeding block To this end, my invention comprises a plurality of independent spring pressure devices of novel construction arranged to overhang and bear upon the tops of the progressing blocks throughout the portions thereof which are presented to the action of the cutters, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
