This invention relates to drilling devices, especially adapted for use in connection with the rotary system of drilling.

The nipple 14 is provided on'its inner side. with an inclined -wall by means of whlch the teeth of the slips 16 are urged into engagement with the formation. The forward ortion of the member 14 is formed with a t 'readed extension to which 'a cutter head 22 is connected and the said aoi In the case of an ordinary well of about fourteen inches in diameter a four inch sample may be taken and as the width of-the wall of the cutter head 22 is one inch the total cut made by the cutter head will be six inches. In addition to this, the reaming cutters 9 will make four inch cuts so that the total diameter of fourteen'inches is provided for.
In operation, the drilling is started in the usual manner'and the sample enters by way of the cutter head 22 and the nipple 14, and the run may continue for as long as desired. At any time'the formation may be tested and thus the possibility of drilling through the producing sands is overcome. 1
Of course any size tool may be employed and the cutting area of the members 9 and the members 22 may be varied as the occasion requires. a i
In carrying out the invention the inner wallsof the recesses 7 are provided with projections 40 adapted to be received in recesses 4:2 in the inner edges of the attaching portions 8 of the cutters 9. By reason of this construction the body 5 is strengthened and the connection between the attaching portions 8 and the body 5 is. also strengthened.
The cutter head 22 is provided with internal rooves having communication with radial openings 52 for the passage of the. fluid by means of which the drilling is facilitated. In carrying out the invention any number of cutters maybe employed.

1. In a device of the character described, 2

being located-to fit into a recess in the associated cutter shank at a point intermediate the securing bolts for said shank.

In a device of the character described, a nipple, interiorly threaded at its upper end and adapted to be threaded upon a tool carrying body member, the bore of the nipplebeing flared outwardly from a point adjacent'its lower end and in an upward direction, diametrically disposed. ribs formed upon the outwardl nipple bore adapts to form a pair of'opr posed runways, and a pair of core retaining members each com 'rislng a block arcuate in shape and adapted to slidingly fit within runways formed by the ribs, theupward movement of the core retaining members be; ing limited by the associated and of a too carrying body to which the upper end oi the nipple may be threaded.
