WRAPPING MACHINE.

My invention relatesto a machine primarily adapted to wrap and seal bread or other articles in waXed paper.
It is aimed to provide a novel machine which is semi-automatic in character and which particularly overcomes the necessity of operating levers or the like in the making of the folds of the paper.y
Another object is to provide a construction. adapted yto receive bread or other articles around which the paper is initially rolled, and to accomplish the initial folding incidental to the placing of such loaf or article intothe machine.
A further object is to provide novel means whereby the folded article may be subjected to heat in order to melt the wax on the paper, and in which the article is then permitted to cool while the folds are engaged to insure solidification of the sealing wax. A furtherobjectis to provide a novel construction wherein the operation of the machine is controlled bythe presence of an articley to be wrapped, in place in the machine.
Still another object is to provide a novel construction wherein the articles are advanced by a conveyor, which conveyor carries certain folding elements, and means to advance the articles. Y

In carrying out the invention, a suitable framework is provided as generally designated 10, consisting kfor instance of a rec-l tangular frame composed of side members 11, end members 12, and supporting legs 13.
Rigid with the frame 10 and disposed over one of the side members 11l is a table section said table section 14 is a similar table section A15.y which however is slidably disposed on the frame 10 toward Vand away from'the section 14 according` to the size of the loaf or. article to be wrapped. In order to move the section 15, it is provided withI a depending follower plate 16 having nuts 17 rigid thereon and threaded on screw threaded portions 18 of rods 19. Said rods 19 are journaled in bearings 20 provided on the side members 11 and one of the said rods 19 eXteriorly of the frame 1() is provided with an operating crank or hand wheel 21. A sprocket wheel' 22 -is keyed to each rod 19 and asprocket chain 23 is trained thereover. Accordinglywhen the crank 21l is operated, one of the shafts or rods 19 is turned thereby and the other rod 19 is simultaneously turned in view of the provision of sprocketewheel 22 and chain V23. At the same time, the screw threads 18 by their engagement with nuts 17 slide the follower 16 laterally of the frame 10 and accordingly vary'the position of the table section or support'l.
Conveniently mounted on the frame 10 is an electric motor or other prime mover 24 whose main shaft has a pulley 25 thereon in driving relation to a belt 26 trained over a pulley 27 which is journaled on a power shaft 28. Shaft 28 is journaled in bearings 29 on the side members 11. Parallel to the shaft 28is a series of shafts 30. 31, 32. y 33, 34, and 35all of which are iournaled in suitabley bearings 36 carried by the side members 11. The said shaft-s 28 and 30 to 35 inclusive, extend loosely through a follower 16 so as not to interfere with vthe movement thereof. Keyed to the shaft 28 is a gear wheel 37 esk in ineah with a gear wheel 38 heycd to eha'lt 30. The knob 103 enables the shaft 35 to be turned independently of operation of the machine to thereby adjust the chain 79, the clutch 81 vslipping past the clutch 82, so that the chain 79 may be properly positioned for initial operation, specifically with respect to varying or. adjust-ing the position ofthe fingers 84 with respect to the folders 91. v
In operation, the loaves of bread or other articles have the waxed paper wrapper B rolled around the same so that the Wrapper projects in unfolded condition beyond each end of the loaf. This is done-manually and with the loaf thus partially wrapped,lit is manually placed onto the table sections 14 and 15, with that portion of the wrapper having the overlapping longitudinal edge portions facing downwardly, and Vmoved downwardly between the adjacent bottom folders 91 which causes the fold c to be initially made incidental to the placing of the article into the machine. The article thus being in the machine, rests onl the fiattened portion 87 of the lever 48, depressing` that lever at its freey end and causing operation of the lever 45 which throws the clutch 42 into engagement with the clutch 41 whereupon power is applied tothe machine fromlthe source 24, through the medium of -the belt 26, pulley 25, shaft 28, gears 37, 3S, 39 and 40 and the shaft 31. Motion from the shaft 31 is transmitted to the shaft 32 through the Geneva motion comprising` parts 72 to 74, and gear wheels 75 and 76, driving shaft 33 and causing the chains 79 to operate the pushers 84 which move the package or loaf A forwardly. At the same time, the shaft 34 through the sprocket wheels and associated parts moves the chains 90 and the folders 91 gradually disengage the loaf as it advances. When the folders 91 disengage the loaf, the top folders 61 are moved downwardly through the engagement of the cams withthe levers 57, thus effecting the folds a. When the wrapper or article is disengaged by the top folders 61, the right hand side folders 71 are in proper position to engage the wrapper to effect the. folds b, due to the coaction of cams 56 with the the article through the movement of fingers 84, after folding of the folds Z), brings the article into engagement with the left hand ond folds 92, such folds serving to complete the end wrapping and provide the folds d, the folders 92 becoming displaced and permitting the loaf or article to move past the same, -after which the springs 93 restore the folders 92 to original position. The loaf is then disposed between the plates 99 with their folded ends in intimate contact with such plates and further movement of the loaf through the medium of fingers 34 disposes it in line *with the heaters 100 and 101,

To insure against opening or separation of the folds until the vwax has thoroughly f cooled or solidified, such flaps or folds after passing from the heating Zone are caused to remain in engagement with the plate 102. After the wax has cooled or solidified, the complete article may be removed manually from the machine.
Various changes may be resorted to prf vided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A machine of the class described having wrapping means, means to advance an article through the machine relatively to the wrapping means and including a clutch, and means to operate said clutch under control of the weight of the article.
