ROAD FORM.

The present invention relates to an improved form for use in shaping or moulding concrete roads, pavements, curbing or the like, and has for its object to provide a form of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can be readily set up in operative position or removed therefrom and will result in a great saving of time and money on either large or small jobs of the character mentioned.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a form of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which will withstand rough handling without danger of getting out of repair, and which can be used repeatedly with out any appreciable deterioration.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain combinations, arrangements and associations of the parts, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following descript-ion and accompanying drawings, in which I Figure l is a transverse sectional view through a metal road form constructed in accordance with the invention, one of the stakes and hangers being shown.
Figure 2'is a rear elevation of a fragmentary portion of the road form, showing one of the stakes and supporting brackets or hangers.

Figure 6 is a rear elevation of portions of two rail sections, showing the coupling, tongues which, are. utilized to connect the abutting ends of two rail sections when they are assembled in operative relation.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all of the views of the drawing by like reference characters.
For the purpose of illustrating and making clear the fundamental ideas constituting and embodied in they invention, one specific 1920. Serial No. 382,808.
construction has been illustrated by the drawings and will be described in the specification.
- The numeral 1 designates a stake which is preferably formed of angle iron and which has the lower end thereof pointed so that it can be readily driven into the ground. The two flanges of the angle iron stake are each provided at the upper ends thereof with the;
transversely disposed serrations 2, and one of the flanges is provided at an intermediate point in the length thereof with a series of triangular notches 3, said notches being arranged with upper horizontal portions and downwardly inclined inner sides. These stakes serve to support the rail or concrete moulding element, a series of the stakes being driven inthe ground at proper intervals along the line of the form.
The rail is formed of a plurality of similar and interchangeable rail sections 4, said f sections being conveniently formed of sheet metal, and having what may be termed a channel a shaped formation. The working faces a with which the concrete or other plastic material is brought into intimate contact when the form is in use are fiat and smooth, and the longitudinal edges of the rail sections are provided with the rearwardly projecting returned fiangeso. The coupling means which is utilized for connecting the abutting ends of the rail sections is illustrated by Figures 6 and 7 Coupling tongues 6 project from opposite ends of each rail section at opposite sides thereof, the arrangement being such that each rail section is reversible and interchangeable. There are no rights and left's, and it is impossible to make any mistake in assembling the railsections. The hangers or supports 8 are carried by the rail sections l. Each rail section is provided with one or more-of the hangers 8 and said hangers are shaped to fit accurately against the rear face of the section and en- ,t ust formed with a laterally extending arm 8 which is adapted to litagainst either flange of the angle iron stake, being provided with serrations corresponding to the serrations 2 of the stake and arranged to interlock therewith. Suitable fastening means such as ti e U shaped clamp 9 is provided for securing the arm 8 to the stake. Said clamp is pivoted at 10 to the hanger arm 8 and pro vided with a handle 11 for convenience whe manipulating the same. The U shaped clamp 9 is adapted to straddle the flange or the stake and the hanger arm 8 and bring the two said members into a tight and forcible engagement with each other 1 when the handle is swung outwardly into a position at right angles to the stake. The two arms of the clamp 9 have such a rela- 'tion, however, that when the handle 11 is swung upwardly or downwardly, as the case may be, depending upon the manner in which the elements are assembled, into a position substantially parallel with the stake the clamp will be disengaged from the stake and the hanger arm 8 can be separated therefrom. It will be obvious that, with this construction, the hanger or support can be quickly mounted upon the stake or detached therefrom, and that the hanger verticallyadjustable upon the stake, since the hanger arm 8 can be raised or lowered upon the stake within the limits oi the serrated portion 2 thereof. It will also be obvious that the hanger can be clamped upon either flange of the angle iron stake, this being due to the interchangeability of the moulds or rails.
A pedestal or bearing plate 12 is adjustably mounted upon the intermediate portion of the stake, said plate being adapted to enthe surface 01" the ground and to prevent the stake from sinking after it has been initially driven into proper position. This bearing plate, which is illustrated in detail by Figure 4, is provided with a triangular opening 14 which. is adapted to slidably receive the angle iron stake. The plate is thus susceptible 01: being moved up and down upon the stake, and after being positioned at the proper elevation thereon it is shifted laterally to bring one of the corners of the triangular opening 14 thereof into an inter locking engagement with one of the triangular notches 3 of the stake, as indicated by Figure 3. then in this position the plate is locked against upward movement on the stake, and the stake is prevented from sinking into the ground in such a manner as to destroy the alinement ot' the rail sections.

The channel rails are so shaped that when using a tam-ping machine or any other device which rides upon the rails, any stone, concrete or the like resting upon the flanges will be dislodged and removed by the wheels 01" the f' .llltlOlllllQ, the flanges being comparatively narrow. It will also be noticed that the top and bottom flanges are similarly shaped" so that the rails are reversible and either flange can beused as the riding edge. This results in convenience in erection, as well as saving, should one edge of a rail be damaged or rendered inoperative for any reason. While one possible embodiment of the inventionhas been illustrated in detail it will be understood that many changes and modifica tions can be made without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my lnvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letcluding a stake having one oi the side faces thereof roughened, a hanger formed with a supporting arm adapted to fit adjustably against the roughened face of the stake, a swinging clamp member for securing the arm to the stake in an adjusted position, and
arail supported by the hanger.

A form of the character described, including a stake formed with a flange having a portion thereof roughened, a hanger formed with a supporting arm adapted to fit against the flange, a clamp for detachably securing the supporting arm to the flange, said member being pivotally carried by one of the members, and a rail supported by the hanger.
7. A form of the character described, including a stake provided with a series of notches, a rail, means for mounting the rail on the stake, and a bearing plate adjustable with respect to the stake and having an edge portion adapted to interlock with a selected one of the notches.
8. A form of the character described, including a stake provided with a series of notches, a rail, means for mounting the rail upon the stake, and a bearing plate formed with an opening loosely receiving the stake, an edge portion of the opening being adapted to be brought into engagement with one of the notches of the stake to hold the bearing plate in an adjusted position.
9. A form of the character described, including an angle iron stake having one of the flanges thereof provided with a series of notches, a hanger, means for clamping the hanger upon a flange of the stake, a rail supported by the hanger, and a bearing plate formed with an opening loosely receiving the stake, an edge portion of the opening being movable into engagement with one of the notches of the stake to hold the bearing plate in an adjusted position.
10. A form of the character described, including a stake, rail supporting means upon the stake, a bearing plate adapted to engage the surface of the ground, and means for adjustably'engaging the bearing plate with the stake at different points in the length of the latter.
11. In a road form of the class described, in combination, a supporting stake, a rail, and a hanger vertically adjustable upon the stake and having positive connection with the rail at opposite edges thereof so as to prevent lateral rocking or tilting of the rail on the hanger, the rail having longitudinally slidable cooperation with the hanger.
12. In a road form of the class described, in combination a stake, a rail to be supported thereby, and a hanger vertically adjustable on the stake and having longitudinal sliding connection with the rail, the rail and hanger being so interengaged so as to prevent lateral rocking or tilting of the rail on the hanger.
13. Means substantially as set forth in claim 12, characterized by the provision of the rail with longitudinal flanges at the edges thereof which slidably engage the hanger and interlock there-with to prevent the lateral tilting of the rail.
14. A form of the character described, comprising a side rail having tread and base flanges, a member slidable longitudinally along the rail between said flanges and bearing upwardly and downwardly against the tread and base flanges, respectively, and stake engaging means carried by said member.
15. A form of the character described, comprising a side rail having tread and base flanges provided with depending and upturned secondary flanges, respectively, a member sli'dable longitudinally along said rail and seated between and against said tread and base flanges and engaging said depending and upturned flanges, and stake engaging means carried by said member.
16. A form of the character described, comprising a side rail having tread and base flanges, said base flange having an upturned secondary flange, a member slidable longitudinally along the rail between said tread and base flanges and engaging under and bearing upwardly against the tread flange,
said member having its lower end engaging said upturned flange, and stake engaging means carried by said member.
17 A holding member for concrete form rails comprising a base, and a pedestal portion extending upwardly from the base to fit against the web of the rail above the base flange, said portion having a head at its upper end extending outwardly to bear upwardly against the tread of the rail.
18. A concrete form comprising a rail having an upright web, an outwardly extending base flange and an outwardly extending tread portion, said tread portion having a depending flange, a pedestal constructed to seat on said base flange and having a head to engage between the web and said depending flange, and means for holding the lower portion of the pedestal on said base flange to prevent the movement of the lower portion of the pedestal away from the web.
19. A concrete form comprising a rail having an upright web, an outwardly extending base flange and an outwardly eX- tending tread portion, a pedestal to seat on said base flange and having a head'to bear upwardly against said tread portion, and means at the outer side of said web for retaining the pedestal on said base flange lower extremity bears downwardly and slid ably en the base flange, a stake to be driven into the ground at the outer side of the rail, and adjustable bracing means for connecting said member and stake.
21. A device of the character described comprising a rail engaging member adapted to be disposed between the base and tread flanges of concrete form rail and formed that ite upper extremity bears upwardly and siidably against the tread flange and that its lower extremity bears downwardly end slid ebl on the base flange and stake en amne' L x, 7 i3 \J means adjustably connected to said member.
