AUGUST ROOS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEER-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,040, dated J une 1, 1875 application filed May 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST Roos, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Beer-Coolers, which improvement is fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional front view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to certain improvements on that class of beer-coolers in which a series of pipes are used, which are placed one above the other in a vertical plane, and through which the water or other cooling medium is conducted, while the beer or other liquid to be cooled trickles down over the outside of said pipes.
The object of my invention is to so construct the apparatus that it may be readily adapted to use in small or large establishments; and to this end it consists in a cooler constructed in sections, each of which, in connection with the distributing-trough and its attachments, forms a complete cooler in itself, and which can conveniently be united in any desired number by means of flanges, forming a complete and continuous cooler of any desired capacity, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawing, the letters A A designate a series of horizontal pipes, which are arranged one above the other in a vertical plane, their ends being supported by columns B B. These columns are hollow, and they are cast in sections, united by flanges and screws or other suitable means, so that the apparatus can be readily put up andtaken apart, as may be desired. On said columns are formed lateral sockets or nipples for the purpose of receiving and supporting the ends of the pipes A A, and opposite to these sockets or nipples are hand-holes closed by screw-plugs or other suitable means, so that easy access can be had to the interior of the pipes for the purpose of cleaning.
When the pipes and columns are united the external surface of the apparatus is free from projections, and it can easily be kept clean, which is an essential desideratum, particularly in beer-coolers.
In the interior of the columns B B are horizontal partitions a, so placed that the coolingmedium is compelled to flow through the pipes A A in a zigzag course. Said partitions are cast with the columns.
From the upper ends of the columns B B rise standards 0 O, which are provided with flat recesses 11 (see Fig. 2) for the reception of lugs c, which project from the ends of the gutter or gutters D. If the pipes A A are of considerable length two or more such gutters are used, as shown in Fig. 1, so that each gutter can be readily handled. By the lugs c and recesses 12 each gutter readily adjusts itself in the desired position over the pipes A A, so that the beer or other liquid discharging from said gutter will trickle down evenly over the surfaces of said pipes. The gutter D is made V-shaped, and it is divided into two compartments, cl 6, (Fig. 3,) by a partitionplate, f, the upper part of which is foraminous, so that the liquid poured into said compartment will spread through its entire length before it passes through the holes in the partition-plate into the discharge-compartment c.
This compartment is provided in its corner with a number of holes, g, which are situated in the same vertical plane with the pipes A A. By this arrangement the beer is uniformly distributed throughout the gutter D, and it trickles down evenly over the entire extent of the pipes A.
The gutters can be readily taken off and their interior can be cleaned without difficulty.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A sectional beer-cooler, consisting of the horizontal tubes A and sectional columns B, provided with flanges for the purpose of connecting a number of said sections together, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the'foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of May, 1875.
W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
