' My invention consists of an improvement in closures for fruit jars and the like. It has for its object to hermetically seal the contents by means of a covering top, laid upon an annular widened edge of the jar, such edge and top having co-acting tongue and groove members, with an intervening sealing gasket, and a fastening clam of the crown cap type for tightly holding e cover downwardly in position. The jar is preferably provided with a lower clamping or holding neck, and the center of the clamp is preferably open in the center, providing for use with a paper disk label to indicate the contents.
The invention is illustrated panying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional view of a jar with the cover in position;

The jar 2 is of glass or similar material, having the contracted neck 3 terminating. in a broad annular top at having an upwardly extending annular rounded tongue 5. Top 4extends beyond the normal thickness of the neck wall, providing a lower rounded shoulder 6 immediately above a contracted channel 7. A lower annular clamping shoulder'8 extends beyond the neck wall and beyond the annular top at, as shown, providing for atin the accomtachment of a holding clamp in applying or' removing the cover.
The cover 9, also of glass, has a middle upwardly arched dome and a seating edge 10 of the same width as top a, with an annular groove 11 corresponding in diameter to tongue or rib 5. Between these contacting faces and the tongue and groove thereof, is a ring gasket 12 of rubber, which may be originally flat, or initially formed to engage the tongue and groove on one side and t e other, as preferred. 7
The cover is tightly clamped down on the rubber gasket and in compressive engagement therewith by clamping rin A. Said ring is of thin sheet metal, shape to snugly embrace the cover and top 4, having an inwardly turned terminal skirt 13. The skirt 13 is more or less resilient, providing for expansion in application and contraction around the rounded shoulder 6, to ensure tight clamping and compression of the gasket. For such purpose, the skirt 13 is either slitted or fluted, as indicated at 14,
in the manner of the well known bottle cap of the crown seal type.
Clamping ring A is preferably provided with an open center 15, providing for exposure of a thin paper label which may be laid over the cover 9 and clamped thereto by the ring. The latter is applied by any suitable means utilizing sufiicient pressure to force the skirt downwardly'around the outer edges of the cover and top ring 4, springing inwardly around the lower edge of the latter with tight clamping engagement. By reason of the holding and compressing action thus provided the rubber gasket 12 is very tightly clamped against the opposing faces and in close intimate engagement with the tongue and groove.
It will be obvious, of course, that the tongue and groove members may be reversed, if desired, with the groove in the vessel top and the tongue or rib on the under side of the cover, with equally good results. All unevenness or inequalities in the faces of the-top and cover are tightly filled and closed, so that the seal is very close and "permanent. Likewise, the contents of the jar are effectually prevented from contacting with any metallic parts, ensuring against fermentation, acid, or other common objections in fruit jars of other kinds.
The cover may be released for removal by use of a lifting tool or implement inserted under the edge of the skirt and used as a pry against the rounded shoulder of ring 8, or otherwise.
The entire device is very simple, eflicient and cheap, and provides for a continuous tight closure of the contents for an indefinite period.
What I claim is:
The combination with a fruit jar having an upper flat top provided with an upwardly extending annular rib between its inner and outer edges, said top extending laterally from the jar, providing a clamping flange having an upper right angle corner portion forming a full bearing seat and an inwardly rounded lower clamping edge, a lower laterally extending holding ring extending beyond the periphery of the top with an intervening contracted annular neck channel, a cover adapted to be laid on said top having a flat bottom with an annular groove corresponding to the annular rib of the top, an intervening ring gasket of packing material, and a hollow center clamping ring therefor of thin sheet metal adapted to embrace the upper outer portion of the cover and having a continuously fluted depending resihent skirt portion adapted to be tightly clamped around the lower clamping edge of the top, substantially as set forth. v 10 In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
