One of thechier" objects of the invention is to provide adevice of this character in Which the tank is double walled and to permit the introduction of steam to either the outer jacket orthe inner portion of the tank as the particular workmay require, and in which the walls of theinner tank are so constructed as to"'perrnit of expansion and contraction without danger of loosening the tank walls. For this purpose the oute'r wa-ll of the tank is'in theform' of a "cylinder 1 of heavy steel construction provided with heads 2 which are riveted to the main body of the tank and carry trunnions 3 which form the support for the tank in uprights 4. The body of the tank is provided with a charging door 5 and a discharge 6, both suitably closed, being located midway of the tank.
The inner Wall or lining to the tank is formed from two circumferentially corrugated steel shells 7, which are riveted to the tank body at either side ottheopenings 5 and 6,"so that the openings pass through the single outer wall only. The corrugated construction oi' the inner shells 7 secure a gre'ater 'heat radiation from the jacketed space, and it will be noted that the shells are attached to the tank. at their ends adjacent the doorsjtl'i'e outer ends of the shells being permitted to expand and contract freely and beingsupportedfor this purpose within a recess 10 in the trunnion 3. The shells" are riveted at their ends to heads 11 and at the center are provided witha' central bearing plate 12 which is'iormed with an extension 13 avhich is slidably received within the reccss"10,the projectionlbeing provided with grooves 15 which admit steamfrom the center of'the trunnion to'the' jacketed space between the walls land 7.
For washing out the tank there are'provided two pertorated'flush pipeslS which are provided with angular extensions 19 which discharge on the bottom of the shell near the end mu 11. In order to prevent the ret'entionofthe "contents of the tank within the shell, the corrugations are filled up at the bottomof the tank. In the present embodiment oi the invention, there arep'ro- 'vided a plurality of tillers or inserts 20 which are situated within the corrugations 'and'exte'nd up along't-he walls a short distance and prevent-the collection oi" liquid or sedim nt wiuun the corrugations This is especially valuable feature of the invention as it rein'ovesall of the old'mat-eria-l b'e-fore'tli'e introduction :of a new batch.

Steam for the interior of the digester is admitted through a steam inlet pipe 35 which is packed, as at 36, on the interior of the central gearing plate 12.
In order to avoid packing located int'eriorly of the tank, the construction may be modified as shown in Figure 3, in which the packing 36 is replaced by a packing 38 located outside of the steam pipe 32.
If a nonrotating drum provided with agitating devices is desired, the tank is mounted on supports it and through the axis of the tank is located a shaft tl provided with vanes or paddles 42 and driven by a gear L3. The steam inlets for the jackets may be arranged above the tank as shown at .4:.
What is claimed is:
1. In a digester for the uses and purposes set forth, a tank having inlet and outlet ports in the central region thereof, shells located within the tank at either side of said ports, the shells being secured directly to the wall of the tank about circumferential lines at either side of the ports, and supports for the ends of the shells at either end of the tank, said supports permitting expan- -sion and contraction of the shells independ ently of the tank.
2. In a digester for the uses and purposes set forth, atank having inlet and outlet ports arranged in the central region thereof, shells located within the tank, said shells being riveted to the wall of the tank adjacent the ports, the walls of said shells being corrugated, a central bearing plate located in the end of each shell, a sliding support for said bearing plate, and means for introducing steam within the jackets formed between the outer wall of the tank and the shells.
3. In a digester for the uses and purposes set forth, a cylindrical tank having inlet and outlet ports arranged centrally thereof, shells having corrugated walls and riveted to the interior of the tank adjacent the ports, a trunnion at each end of the tank, and a bearing plate on the end of each shell having an extension slidably received within the trunnion.
4. A digester for the uses and purposes set forth, the axis of which is horizontal, the inner wall of which is circumferentially corrugated, and tiller strips within the corrugations along the bottom of the digester.

6. A digester for the uses and purposes set forth, comprising a horizontally arranged tank, an inner shell within the tank, the
walls of which are corrugated, and filler strips within the corrugations at the bottom of the shell to prevent accumulation of the contents of the shell.
7. A digester for the uses and purposes set forth, comprising a horizontal shell, the inner surface of which is corrugated except along the bottom of the shell.
8. A. digester for the uses and purposes set forth, comprising a horizontal shell, the inner surface of which is provided with circumferential corrugations except along the bottom of the shell.
9. A digester for the uses and purposes set forth, comprising a horizontal cylindrical tank, two oppositely positioned corrugated shells riveted to the tank, a central bearing plate on each shell having a projection extending therefrom, and a support at each end of the tank adapted to receive the projection and permit movement thereof.
10. In a digester for the uses and purposes set forth, a tank having inlet and outlet ports in the central region thereof, shells lo cated within the tank at either side of said ports, the shells being secured to the wall of the tank about spaced circumferential lines at either side of the ports, thereby exposing a belt about the inner surface of the tank, a bearing the end of each shell, sliding supports for said bearings, and means for introducing steam about the shells.
11. A digester for the uses and purposes set forth, comprising an outer tank, two spaced inner shells within said tank and riveted thereto in the region adjacent the center of the tank, inlet and outlet ports between the shells, steam inlets to the spaces between the tank and the shells, a central bearing plate in the end of each shell slidably supported by the tank, a steam inlet passing through the bearing plate at an end of the shell, the walls of the shells being corrugated circumferentially, filler plates within the 100 corrugations at the bottom of the shells, and flush pipes at the end of each shell.
12. A digester for the uses and purposes set forth, comprising a horizontal cylindrical tank having an inner and outer wall, the 105 inner wall having a plurality of parallel corrugations extending circumferentially of the tank and an opening passing through the walls, the inner wall being secured to the outer wall adjacent the opening and free to. 110
expand along the axis of the tank.
