SCREEN CLEANER.
Application filed December My invention relates to improvements in screen cleaners, and it consists in the combinations'; constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is the provision of a simple, reliable: and eflicient" cleaner for a screen through which. a spraying mixture,
paint, or like fluid substance passes ina. con,-
duit of a sprayer or like device, whereby rup- 1 ture of or injury to the screen will", be obviatedxwhen the mixture is forced through the screenunder a considerable pressure, and
a, no-zzleor discharge member having a; relatively small discharge orifice can be employed without likelihood that such discharge, orifice will be clogged.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a screen cleaner of the, character described which will. not offer any objectionable obstruction to the passage of a spraying mixture or like substance in the conduit in which. the device is located to,- ward the associated screen;

The shaft 13 is held against outward axial movement in the boss 10 by a plate 15 which rests against the inner end of the boss 10 and is secured to the shaft 13 by afcap screw 16 orlike fastening device. The outer end portion of the shaft 13' carries a-bevel gear 17. A bevel gear 18 ona drive shaft 19 is in'mesh with the gear 17' and is disposed between the latter and the head 2' and thus cooperates with the plate 15 to.prevent any appreciable axial movementjof the shaft 13 in the; boss 10; The drive shaft 19 is journaled in abearing 20' which may be a suitably apertured arm of a bracket 21 that is integral with the body 1 atoneed e'of the head 2. The tubu an body 1 is provided intermedi ate the plane of, the shoulder 11 and the removable heads with a lateral outlet openmg'22 which may be providedwith internal screw threads for engaging with the screw threaded end portion of a pipe '23. The tubular body 1 also is rovided'with a lateral intake opening 24 WhlClllS located intermediate the plane of the plate 15 and the plane of the shoulder 11. The intake opening 2 L may be threadedl engaged bya supply'tube 25. Y The tubular ody 1 also may have alateral' cleanout opening 26 which is located adjacent to the vplane of the inner face of the head 2. The clean-out opening 26 may have internal screw threads for engaging with an end portion of adrain or cleanout pipe 27', or a pl.ug, not shown.
A screen member 28 of relatively fine mesh fits snugly in an end portion of the tubular body .l-against the shoulder'll and a second screen member 29 of the same size as the screen member 28 but of coarsermesh fits in the tubular body 1 against the screen member 28. Such screen members will be clamped firmly against the shoulder 11 by a ring which fits in the tubular body 1 between the marginal edge portions of the screen members and the head 4 and receives sutlicient pressure from the head 4 when the latter is secured in place on the flanged end of the body 1 to firmly secure the marginal edge portions of the screen members 28 and 29 in place against the shoulderll. The ring 30 has a lateral opening 31 in register with the aforesaid outlet opening 22.
The plate 15 is provided on its inner face with a pairof studs 32 which respectively are joined to diametrically opposite portions of the plate 15 and are located parallel with and equi-distant from the extended axial line of the shaft 13. The studs 32 terminate a substantial distance from the screen member 28. A brush that is adapted to be used in the device has a back 33 and bristles 34, the back 33 being provided adjacent to its opposite ends with openings 35 for the reception of the free end portions of the studs 32 and the bristles 34 being of sufficientlength to be pressed firmly against the screen member 28 as a result of the action of expansion springs 36 on the brush back, the expansion springs being coiled about the studs 32 between the plate 15 and the brush back 33. The studs 32 and the springs 36 preferablyare of sufiicient length to support the brush back 38 in a plane intermediate the screen member 28 and the intake o'pening 24 and the brush back is provided at its approximate center with an opening 37 of substantial area through which liquid may pass from the intake opening 24 to the bristles ofthe brush. The brush back is of less area in cross section than the space within the tubular body 1 so that the liquid mixture that enters the intake'opening 24 also may pass around the brush back to the bristles and also to the screen.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The device is particularly well adapted for use in a machine for discharging a spraying mixture onto vegetables, trees, or the like, or for spraying paint. It is desirable in making use of a spraying machine of the character referred to that the discharge member or nozzle have a relatively small discharge orifice and it has been found in actual practice that such discharge orifice will be clogged and closed after the machine has been in use but a relatively short time unless the mixture is thoroughly strained or filtered before reaching the nozzle. In order to effect such straining or filtering of the mixture, a screen of relatively small mesh must be used and it is essential that an efficient screen cleaner be employed to prevent clogging and stoppage of the screen if the operation of the sprayer is to be satisfactory.
In making use of the device, the mixture that is tobe screened enters the tubular body 1 through the intake opening 24 and passes through the screen 2829 to the outlet 22. Motion may be imparted to the shaft 19 in any suitable known manner and the rotation of the shaft 19 will cause turning'of the shaft 13 and of the brush. The bristles ofthe brush will be moved incircular paths in contact with the screen and will have a wiping action on the screen which will prevent clogging of the orifices of the screen and also will serve to dislodge from the screen any hard particles which are too large to pass through the meshes of the screen member 28. The tubular body 1 preferably will be disposed upright during the operation of the device so that the annular space between the boss 10 and the tubular body will serve as a trough for the reception of the particles which are too large to pass through the mesh of the screen member 28. The matter that has accumulated in the body 1 between the'boss 10 and the inner wall of the body can be removed through the clean-ou't opening 26 and the pipe 27 when desired, it being understood that the clean-out opening 26 or the pipe 27 adjacent to the clean-out'opening 26 normally is closed'by a suitable plu or valve, not shown, or in any other suitable known manner. Obviously, .the invention is sus ceptible of embodiment in forms other than that whch is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations thereof as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims; a
I claim y 1. A screen cleaner comprising a hollow body having an inlet andan outlet, a screen disposed within said hollow body between said inlet and said outlet, a rotary shaft extending into said hollow body on the inlet sideof said screen, a pair of spaced studs supported on said rotary shaft and operable by said shaft, said studs having free end portions, and a brush having openings in its back for the reception of the free end .portions of said studs and having bristles in contact with said screen, said brush back having a central opening through which material may pass from said inlet to said'screen.
2. A screen cleaner-comprising a hollow body having a head at one end provided with an internal central boss and having an annular shoulder spaced from the plane of the end of said boss, said hollow body having an inlet opening located at the same side of said annular shoulder as said boss and an outlet located at the other side of the plane of said annular shoulder, said inlet opening disposed in a plane which is located between the upper end of the boss and the-shoulder, a screen secured against said annular shoulder through which liquid must pass from said inlet to said outlet, said boss having a central bore, a shaft journaled in said bore, a plate secured to the inner end of said shaft having a pair of extending spaced studs respectively located at opposite sides of and equi-distant from the extended axial line of said shaft, and a spring pressed brush having openings in its back slidably receiving said studs and having bristles in contact with said screen.

A screen cleaner comprising a hollow body having a head at one end provided with an internal central boss and having an annular shoulder spaced from the plane of the end of said boss, said hollow body having an inlet opening located at the same side of said annular shoulder as said boss and an outlet located at the other side of the plane of said annular shoulder, said inlet opening disposed in a plane which is located between the upper end of the boss and the shoulder, a screen secured against said annular shoulder through which liquid must pass from said inlet to said outlet, said boss having a central bore, a shaft journaled in said bore, a plate secured to the inner end of said shaft having a pair of extending spaced studs respectively located at opposite sides of and equi-distant from the extended axial line of said shaft, and a spring pressed brush having openings in its back slidably receiving said studs and having bristles in contact with said screen, said hollow body also having a clean-out opening located adjacent to said head at one end of said hollow body.
4. A screen cleaner comprising a hollow body having a head at one end provided with an internal central boss and having an annular shoulder spaced from the plane of the end of said boss, said hollow body having an inlet opening located at the same side of said annular shoulder as said boss and an outlet located at the other side of the plane of said annular shoulder, a screen secured against said annular shoulder through which liquid must pass from said inlet to said outlet, said boss having a central bore, a shaft ournaled in said bore, a plate secured to the inner end of said shaft having a pair of extending spaced studs respectively located at opposite sides of and equi-distant from the extended axial line of said shaft, and a spring pressed brush having openings in its back slidably receiving said studs and having bristles in contact with said screen, said brush back also having a central opening for the passage of liquid from said inlet to said screen.
