DE WITT C. FARRINGTON, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-CASES FOR MACHINE-GUNS.
.Specication forming'part of Letters Patent No. l63,922, dated June 1, 1875 application tiled November 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DE WITT G. EARRING- TON, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Feed-Cases for Machine or Repeat-ing Guns; and I do declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, to be a clear and exact description of the saine, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the case looking toward the heads of the cartridges, and consists of two compartments, A and B, to be illed with cartridges and held in position by spring-hooks C. Each compartment has a follower, D, which is placed in the rear ofthe column of cartridges. Upon placing the mouth of the feed-case into the mouth of the hopper I of the gun the spring-hooks C are withdrawn by the inclined plane E of the hopper I, and the cartridges fall into the carrier-block F, being followed and pressed down by the follower D. After the case is emptied it is withdrawn, the spring-hook C being forced into the slot G, in the follower, 'retains it in position. The case is then inverted and the contents of the second compartment are delivered to the carrier-block as before. It -will be noticed that the lugs H upon the spring-hook, as shown in Fig. 3, and which are acted upon by the inclined planes E of the hopper, do not extend beyond the end of the Case which prevents the spring-hooks C from being withdrawn by coming in contact with the gun or other object which would allow the cartridges to fall out. It also allows the opening of the feed-case to be carried nearer to the carrier-block than if the opening mechanism extended beyond the feed-case.
The slotted follower D, the spring-hook C, and the lugs H, and inclined planes E may be used and operated on a feed-case having but one compartment, if desired, a front section of which is shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The duplex feed-case herein described, the cartridge delivery of the compartments being arranged at opposite ends, and the case adapted for operation, as set forth.
2. In combination, a cartridge-magazine or feed-case and a spring-hook, C, provided with lugs H, the hook and lugs being above the end of the case, substantially as set forth.
3. The follower D, when provided with the slot G, adapted for operation, and to be secured in place by the spring-hook C, in the manner substantially as set forth.
4. Ihe combination of the inclined planes E, with the spring-hook C, and the lugs H, operatin g with the inclined planes or slots E, for the purposes and in the manner substantially as set forth.
