knob in which a mass of material, prefera-' bly, though not necessarily, fragile in character, such as glass, porcelain or the like, may be moldedor otherwise formed about an inner member in such a manner that cracking of said material may effectively be prevented, said inner member being equipped with means, preferably in the form of corrugations or knurled portions so that said material may coact therew th to form a llQ'lCl structure to prevent any relative movement therebetween, a suitable fasteningmeans being detachably associated with said inner member, no part thereof, and no part of said inner men'iber being projected externally of said material, whereby a very ornamental yet serviceable article of manufacture may be provided.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a novel process of producing; furniture knobs by molding, casting, or pressing a fragile or other mass of material about an attaching member insuch a manner that cracking of said material may effectively be prevented.

Another object of my invention is to provide a novel form of device which is ornamental in appearance, easy and inexpensive to manufacture. and one which will'thoroughly and reliably effect the objects intended. v

Further'objects and advantages of my invention will become more apparent as the description thereof proceeds.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar parts. In the drawings,

Describing my invention more in detail, itis my purpose to produce a very ornamental furniture knob in whichno part of the attaching means associated with said knob may project therefrom to detract from the ornamental appearance thereof, said attaching means being positioned entirely within the knob, a faste ing element or de vice, preferably, though not necessarily in the form of a screw being detachably associated with said knob.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2,a sleeve or inner member 1, preferably constructed as shown. and cyl ndr cal 111 form, s equipped externally I with corrugations 2, produced thereon in any way found in practice to be desirable, said corrugations extending substantially the entire length thereof, the inner end of said sleeve being provided with a tapered portion 4, free from corrugations, for a purpose presently to be described. Said sleeve or inner member is equipped internally with screw threads to engage detachably with the screw or other fastening member 5, a suitable washer or other device 6, if desired. being positioned on said screw to engage with ortake against the piece of furniture or support f. The sleeve 1 may be constructed of any preferred material, and the corrugations 2 may extend only a portion of the length of said sleeve if desired. Further, other fastening;- means than that shown'may be substituted and still remain within the province of my invention.

A fragile mass M, preferably of a material. such as glass, porcelain or the like, is

molded, cast, pressed. or otherwise formed about the sleeve or inner member 1, said material entering the corrugations 2 and effectively preventing: any relative movement between said mass and said sleeve, and insurbI-l ing that said material will not be cracked in the process of construction.

As previously pointed out, the inner end of the sleeve 1 is tapered as indicated by the numeral 4-, providing an inner opening 7 of smaller diameter than the opening 8, said opening and tapered portion, in the process of construction, providing an air bubble which bubble, and the manner in which the material M is formed about said sleeve, together with the corrugations, insuring that said material will under no circumstances be cracked when the operation is completed.

The base 11 of the mass lWI is preferably formed somewhat concaved, and is equipped with a set of projections 10, preferably though not necessarily arranged symmetrically about the face of said base. Preferably concentrically arranged within the projections 10 are similar projections 9, but preferably smaller in size. It will of course be understood that it is within the province of my invention to arrange said projections, and to make them of any size and number in practice found desirable. The purpose of said projections, as well as the concaved face is to prevent any turning movement between the knob and its support 7, after the screw or fastening element 5 is screwed home through said support and into the sleeve or inner member 1. It will be understood also that other means may be associated with the sleeve 1 than that shown for detachably associating the knob with its support.

In Figs. 35 inclusive I have shown the sleeve 1 as provided with knurls 2 instead of corrugations, as shown in Fig, 1, said sleeve being equipped with openings 7 and 8 and a tapered plain portion 4. The mass M with its base 11, projections 10 and 9, is formed about said sleeve in precisely the same manner as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a bubble 6 being formed as shown in Fig. A fastening means 5 is also associated with the knob, but the washer 6 is omitted. It may also be stated that the projections 9 and 10' are of somewhat different form than those disclosed with the other form of my invention.

While I have thus described my invention with great particularity, it will be clear thatthe same may be modified thruout a wide range. I therefore do not propose to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, but reserve the right in practice to make any and all modifications thereof that fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A furniture knob comprising in combination an ornamental head, a base portion on said head, means on said base portion adapted to prevent moven'ient of said head when in position on a piece of furniture, an

.open-ended tapered sleeve in said head,

means on said sleeve for preventing the turning of said head on said sleeve, and a detachable means adapted to be thrust through said furniture and anchored in said sleeve.

2. In a furniture knob, an open-ended sleeve, tapered at its inner end, a mass of ornamental fragile material molded about said sleeve to provide a space therein juxtaposed to the tapered end of said sleeve to prevent said material from cracking, and means adapted to be thrust through the support on which said knob is positioned and engage said sleeve internally for detachably associating said knob with said support.

3. In a furniture knob, in combination, a transparent ornamental portion, an internally threaded externally corrugated sleeve about which said portion is molded, for preventing said portion from moving thereon, integral means on said knob for preventing its movement when positioned on a support, and a screw threaded attaching means, adapted to be thrust through said support and enter said sleeve for holding said knob on said support.

4. A furniture knob comprising a transversely corrugated sleeve, :1 mass of ornamental material molded thereabout and into said corrugations to prevent any movement of said material on said sleeve. a base portion on said. knob, said base portion being concaved, projections on said base portion adapted to engage the support on which said knob is positioned for preventing any movement of said knob on said support, and means extending through said support, and anchored in said sleeve for detachably associating said knob with said support.
